Description

Overview card for the different versions of the Condor class, the Turian main Cruiser. The Condor class is a canon design from the Mass Effect Universe and was seen in Mass Effect 1 in the far background of the Citadel. In the further course, the ship was never seen again, instead the frigate model was used for the design, which was then used as a frigate, cruiser or dreadnought, only in different scaling.

The turian Condor class is the standard cruiser of the Hierarchy military and is considered midsize with its exact length of 500 meters.

By today's standards, the Condor class is considered slightly obsolete and many of its duties have been ceded to the heavy frigates of the Gannet class over the years. Nonetheless, she is still an important part of the turian Navy.

The name Condor comes from a translation error at the time of the Relay 314 Incident, or as people call it, the First Contact War. When humans met the turians in 2157, there was  no exchange of knowledge, so the omni-tools were initially able to translate the direct language, but misinterpretations occurred, especially with proper names. The Condor class is named after a large-winged avian creature native to Palaven, the Vultus. The early human translation devices recognized that the proper name was a bird-like creature but could not clearly assign it and used the closest substitute term in human vocabulary. The error was posted to the extranet and has not been corrected since.

Cruisers are the backbone of modern navies due to their balance of endurance, firepower, and protection at lower costs per ton than other types of ships. The turians expanded the "jack of all trades" nature of the cruiser by adding more cargo space and forward firepower at the expense of some armor, decreased broadsides, and inferior point defense systems. This cargo space is used to carry a larger contingent of troops and their accompanying equipment, or huge stores of supplies. This allows ship captains to change the ship configuration to fit different missions. A cruiser may carry a company full of troops plus shuttles/gunships on a pirate suppression operation while a cruiser geared for fleet action may carry a full wing (8-12) of strike fighters.

The Condor class is slightly outdated but still superior compared to its Systems Alliance counterparts. Compared to the First Contact War Era Berlin class of humans, which is almost 150 meters longer, it has the same firepower and is even faster and more maneuverable. Only the newer York class should allow the eternal arms race to turn more in favor of the Systems Alliance.

The primary armament consists of a 460 meter long spinal mass accelerator cannon which is relatively typical for a ship in the cruiser weight class. In addition, the ship has four frontal and six side heavy missile launchers. Secondary armament consists of 30 (15 each side) Broadside Guns and 20 smaller Broadside Ship to Ship missile launchers on each side. The Point Defense System varies from ship to ship, and may include GARDIAN Defense Lasers, smaller MAC Autocannons, or SWORD Attack Lasers.

The Condor class may be getting old, but according to turian doctrine, to have as many ships as possible at their disposal, far from obsolescence. More ships means one can control a larger area of space or act quicker in an emergency case. In 2180, the Volus unexpectedly offered a modernization of the Condor class. Having just started building their first dreadnought, the Kwunu , based on turian blueprints they improved themselves, they had several suggestions that the Condor class could also benefit from. The turian military accepted and over the next 2 years the first Condor Mk2 ships were launched. Later models even received Thanix Guns for the first time.
