Overview Card for the Leonidas class Destroyer of the Systems Alliance.

Nicknamed "Swords of the Alliance" or "Lions of the Alliance", Leonidas class starships are 403 meters in length and classified as Light Destroyers. They combine the speed and agility of an frigate with the firepower closer to an cruiser. Leonidas ships are heavily armed for its size, but only lightly armored to achieve greater speed and maneuverability. In fact, the Leonidas class is the most agile Destroyer type vessel of the Alliance.

Learned from the technology of the Reapers, these ships used Thanix magnetic-hydrodynamic cannons instead of the standard spinal mass accelerators which also saved enormous space and further reduced the weight of the ship.

The ship is crewed with 185 Alliance Navy Officers but can accommodate another 70 to 90 marines for ground duties and missions if needed.

Each ship holds 6 Kodiak Drop Shuttles, 2 Bumblebee class Bombers and a Squadron of 8 Trident Mk 3 Starfighter.

Systems Alliance Destroyer type vessels are usually named after military leaders. The Leonidas class Destroyer is named after King Leonidas the first, a warrior king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, a dynasty which claimed descent from the mythological demigod Heracles and Cadmus. Leonidas had a notable participation in the Second Persian War, where he led the allied Greek forces to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army; he entered myth as the so-called leader of the 300 Spartans.

The class Leader SSV Leonidas entered service in 2185 but spent an additional three months in dry dock after the new technology of the Thanix cannon was developed by the turians. The Alliance Command wanted to see this new weapon installed on their destroyers immediately and equipped all subsequent Leonidas ships with Thanix cannons. Sisterships of the Leonidas were the SSV Vercingetorix, the SSV Wallace and the SSV Lionheart, which followed in 2186, shortly before the Reaper War.
