Description

A while ago, i made a Starship Comparison for most of the larger size SciFi-Hero ships, such as the Galactica, the Andromeda Ascendant, Star Treks Galaxy class USS Enterprise, the Moya or Star Wars Imperial class Star Destroyer. (you can find it here: fav.me/d9gbjeo )

Now after lots and lots of request which ended in my mailbox who asked how big the Orville is, i made this image. More or less most of the major mid or small size Hero ships.

The list does not claim to be complete.

For the size of the White Star please note, that we had seen three different scales during the show.
In first they worked with an size between 120 to 260 meters. The original dimensions made some parts of the ship far too small to walk through, especially after accounting for hull thickness and the size for the shuttlecrafts etc. This was especially problematic at the neck to the bridge module and for the shuttlebay which should be able to hold four Minbari fighters. Designer Jim Earls, who joined B5 in Season 4 scaled up the ship to the 475 meters. The new scale was officially approved by JMS and the producers and is now the size to which the animators must scale.

Intrepid class is still a small or midsize ship in comparison to most ships we saw during TNG or Ds9. The Nebula or Galaxy class were double the size of the Intrepid.

The starships of the Heroes / Protagonists in the shows. The Enterprise for Star Trek, the Millenium Falcon for Star Wars, the Galactica in Battlestar Galactica and so on.

Wow. I looked at this and had to check out the latest Elite: Dangerous size comparison video, and it really drove home just how goddamn BIG some of the flyable ships in that game are.

For reference, here’s the video in question: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nDYYY…

The Beluga liner is the biggest one we can own at present and the Thargoid vessels aren’t usable by players, but it really puts it in perspective just what kind of metal the players are allowed to fly around.

I had no idea the White Star was supposed to be so large. Or, relatively speaking, Start Trek ships were so small. Cool.

The White Star was seen in different sizes during the show. It seems the CGI crew were not really sure, how big the ship should be, so they adjust the size how they need it to shot the scenes. But the size i use here for the the White Star was stated by the creators later.

Star Trek ship were always small compared to the other scifi universe. But i found it much more plausible for the time i plays

Euderion, I think the Prometheus might be off. About a year or two ago, one of the Stargate CG guys sent meshes of the Daedalus & Prometheus to Trekyards and they found out what the actual scalings may be apparently:
X-303 Part 1: youtu.be/LiIW7wmZkKM
X-303 Part 2: youtu.be/LgRkh-mkONI
BC-304: youtu.be/VVBJhBhsatg

It's discussed in a thread on a scifi website called Spacebattles: forums.spacebattles.com/thread…

I use here the official gives size Data. Of course, lots of SciFi Ships have scaling issues, such as the Star Trek Defiant class, Mass Effects Normandy or the Babylon 5 White Star.

I had once done my own calculation for the Stargate Daedalus class and came to an size of around 600 meters. Prometheus as a prototype should smaller.

Ah okay.

It's kind of funny but the Prometheus there has probably one of the most powerful weapons of the ships shown, yet I bet its missiles could easily be shot down by the Normandy, Enterprise, Orville, Voyager, & White Star there, since all have far superior point defense I'd say.

Euderion In reply to wellis [2019-03-12 15:29:01 +0000 UTC]

The missiles of the Stargate ships are usually very slow. Most advanced ships with particle/energy weapons could easily intercept them hundred of thousand kilometer before they reach its target. Especially the Star Trek ships with their faster than light sensors.

wellis In reply to Euderion [2019-03-12 22:16:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah they're just essentially chemically propelled rockets. It's kind of amazing they can even hit anything.

Also another hilarious thing is that every FTL-travel capable vessel there, except for the Normandy, has the bridge/CIC be in awkward position, with the Enterprise, Prometheus, Orville, Intrepid, & White Star all having a bridge on top of the ship while the Millennium Falcon has a bridge on the side. Only the Normandy has a correct position of where the bridge/CIC should be, buried within the ship.

Nice! Interestingly, the White Star is somewhat bigger than I thought and The Orville is smaller.

I love Normandy, I'm so mad about ME sice it came into my life, I have no words.

I like all Star Trek ships, BUT:

Don't screw with Mimbari or Vorlons. Just don't...

Started today 2nd season of B5 BTW for like gazillionth time.

The White Star always had scaling issues, which were never fully resolved.

Wow, They were powerful ships, but I had no idea the White Stars were that large either.  I never pictured the Firefly being larger than the Millennium Falcon, but then again it carried two shuttles.  Great job!  I wonder how Moya from Farscape would have compared?

Euderion In reply to Shadoweddancer [2019-03-05 20:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Moya is much larger.

I have an older image with some of the bigger ships here (Moya included):

Wow, that's cool.  Never realized the Babylon 5 Earth destroyers were as larger than Moya either but they never spent much film time inside one of those.

All too big. I limited it on 500 meters because it is a chart for small and midsize hero ships.

Would you consider the Stalwart-class frigate from Halo 2, In Amber Clad, to be able to fit within this chart at 478 meters in length?

www.halopedia.org/UNSC_In_Ambe…

Or the Charon-class frigate from Halo 3, Forward Unto Dawn, at 490 meters in length, to be able to fit in this chart?:

Possible for a future size comparison.

Just for the interest, is the a complete size comparison for the Halo ships? Because im a PC player i never had the opportunity to play the games.

wellis In reply to Euderion [2019-03-12 22:09:45 +0000 UTC]

This has some but not all of the ships: imgur.com/gallery/s3YSukT

Specifically it doesn't have the UNSC supercarriers like the Punic-class carriers: www.halopedia.org/Carrier

Here is the Halopedia article on warships that you might find useful: www.halopedia.org/Warship

EDIT: This guy's DA page might prove useful for you: www.deviantart.com/white0222/g…

It only doesn't have the Punic-class supercarriers.

MUCH bigger. The Infinity is over 5 kilometer long. And even the small Halo frigates would not fit in this image.

DarugoDream In reply to Euderion [2019-03-05 20:49:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I knew the Infinity was super massive, but I figured the Pillar of Autumn was around this size. Huh. Guess not.

A great collection!

Also I did not realize the White Stars were that big. I always assumed they were more like hyperpowered frigates.

Happy to see the Prometheus. Some call her ugly, but she's a distinct design and saved two galaxies. Not bad for the first large-scale interstellar spacecraft developed from the Stargate program.
