Yeah, actually I think that QP sama showed her best in describing complicated relationship of Rezo and Zel. Many times her Rezo/Zel writings give me chill.

The materials of Slayers is those of tragedy's. That's why there had been tons of tragic Zel fanfictions. But Mr. Kanzaka made it into a comedy...XD
QP sama's Rezo/Zel...The part of Rezo that harassed Zel mentally was actually Dark Lord Shabranigudu. Rezo himself loved Zel, but he didn't know how to love other people. Zel was a precious family to him, but Dark Lord distorted the emotion.....and the shape of Rezo's Love on Zel became horrible. In her fic Chronicle of Chimera, (chapter 6-2 & 6-3) that Rezo's puzzlement is described very well. 
Some fans believed the horrible treatment on Zel was Rezo's nature, not the Dark lord's. Others didn't. Well, since Kanzaka sensei didn't clarify it we don't know what's the truth....=w=;

I also want to believe that it's the matter of Rezo's dual nature and that the true tyrant was Dark Lord Shabranigdu. Because otherwise for me it doesn't make any sense. We can speculate that the things were that way in manga (I don't know how the things were in novel) when during the battle with Shabranigdu, Lina called Rezo to stop the monster and help them. And then suddenly the Dark Lord spoke with Rezo's voice and gained some part of his consciousness. Also after the battle Lina met and spoke with Rezo in her dream. And then he was totally different than before, calm and gentle. It's because of his tragedy, his blindness and alienation and his desperate wish to cure himself, he became susceptible to Dark Lord influence. That's how I see it. Actually it's sad that the story didn't show us some kind of reconciliation between Rezo and Zel. It would be really nice to see such thing but well. After all we have a lot of fanfics to read, right?
Anyway I would like to ask you if you have ever read the original Slayers novel? Because there is one thing that I'm curious about. If Zel ever regained his human form in novel? Or has it been unsolved just like in manga? And how different is novel from manga? Sorry that I bother you with such questions but the internet doesn't satisfy my curiosity with informations about that. At least not in a language that I can understand.

In novel, Lina called out Rezo in front of Shabranigdu holding Giga-slaved Sword of Light like this : Rezo! Choose yourself! To be eaten or to be free (by & from Dark Lord). And Shabranigdu was puzzled for a short moment. Zel cried out Rezo just after Lina, like anime "Why are you trying to destroy the world that you've wanted to see so desperately" --and Lina slashed him. With the collapse of Sabranigdu, Rezo's soul disppears, saying 'I'm sorry' That scene was pretty much like anime.
I started reading Slayers novel before anime. 
Most info in English seems to be correct but in some parts I doubt if it's true...If Slayers was still popular, people must validity the truth of simple rumor or official source. But nowadays it's hard to find related souces =w=;;

Oh yeah, I made it into PG-13 but I think the original fic is NC17 or R due to mental/physical violence. QP sama's dark fanfics made readers shuddered with chill running through the spine. =.= Well, Original Slayers novel itself is over PG-13 I think...

Definitely Rezo could be as intelligent as twisted... Something that Shabragnigudu knew use in his advantage, of course u_u
However in my stories Rezo used Zelgadiss in order to keep bandits at bay following him or against traitors or people who denied his requests in associations or orders...
