TWO MONTHS EARLIER
“Mr. Wayne wanted me to drop this off,” Alfred handed you a pair of cuffs, “He also told me to tell you that he’ll have all your things moved back here by tomorrow evening.”
You barely nodded, your fingers grazing over the cuffs you got him for his birthday. They were special. You made them yourself.
PRESENT DAY
I’m down to my skin and bone
And my mommy, she can’t put down the phone
And stop asking how I’m doing all alone, alone
But the truth is the stars are falling, ma
And the wolves are out c-calling, ma
And my home has never felt this far
“Are you taking your medicine?”
“Yes.”
“Are you eating enough?”
“Yes.”
“How ‘bo-”
“Mom,” You silenced her next words, “I’m fine. It’s been two months. I’m over it.”
Liar.
“Okay, honey..” She didn’t sound convinced, but went along with it anyway, “Maybe it’s time to get back out there. Meet someone new?”
You closed your eyes and sighed softly, “I’m kind of…busy lately. With work.”
“Y/N-”
“Sorry, I gotta go.”
You hung up on her, tossing your phone off to the side of the couch as you snuggled deeper into it. This wasn’t what you wanted. You wanted to get off your butt and walk out that door, showing what Bruce is missing. You just couldn’t bring yourself to do it. The breakup was harder than you expected. You were alone.
But all this driving
Is driving me crazy
And all this moving
Is proving to get the best of me
And I’ve been trying to hide it
But lately
Every time I think I’m better
Pickin’ my head up, getting nowhere
Just when you thought you were over him. Heck, you even asked out the new journalist today; Clark Kent, a farmer’s boy from Smallville. He was pretty cute. But he wasn’t Bruce.
You slammed your head into the back of the couch, groaning.
“Fuck me,” You mumbled.
You stared up at the ceiling in boredness. Maybe if I sit here long enough I’ll die.
Take me back to the basics and the simple life
Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease
Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
“This is nice,” You commented, snuggling deeper into his hold, “I could get used to this.”
Bruce chuckled, holding you closer to his heated body, “Me too.”
You smiled in delight. You twisted and turned on your other side, pulling the blankets tighter around you two as you stared into his blue eyes. “You know I’m just sleeping with you for your money right?”
“I figured,” He smirked, “Too bad you can’t have any.”
You rolled your eyes with a grin, “Oh no, my plans to take all your money have been thwarted. Whatever shall I do?”
“You could always kiss me,” He mumbled, pulling in your face for a kiss with a cheeky grin.
You matched his grin and pecked his lips, “There. Now can I have your money?”
“Nope.”
Now I’m down to my skin and bones
My baby listens to me on the phone
But I can’t help feeling like I’m all alone, all alone
The truth is, the stars are falling, babe
And I’d never ever thought that I would say
I’m afraid of the life that I’ve made, I’ve made
“Stupid Bruce,” You muttered, sitting up straight, “Fuck him and his stupid, cheeky smile.”
You ran a hand through your hair in frustration. You wanted–needed–someone to talk to, anyone. The only person you had was Bruce. You were never good at making and maintaining relationships. No wonder he dumped you. Who would want to be with someone who would ultimately ruin everything?
You regretted being this way. Being too scared to get hurt that you hide away, ruining everything and everyone around you. This wasn’t who you wanted to be.
But all this driving
Is driving me crazy
And all this moving
Is proving to get the best of me
And I’ve been trying to hide it
But lately
Every time I think I’m better
Pickin’ my head up, getting nowhere
You bit your lip. Staring down at your hands, thinking. What was there even to really think about? He left you, probably for some young bimbo. Someone who met his “requirements”. It was stupid to even think he loved you.
But he did.
But he didn’t.
But he did.
Who knows how he really felt about you?
Why do you even care?
What was the point anymore?
Take me back to the basics and the simple life
Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease
Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
“Rude.” You mocked hurt, holding a hand to your chest.
He chuckled softly, “I have an idea.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Is that so? Last time you had an idea, you nearly burnt this place down to the ground.”
He rolled his eyes, a smile still on his lips, “We could always share the money.”
You smile faded, your heart pounded, and you were sure you stopped breathing. You pushed away from him and sat up, “Are you-”
“Yes.”
“Oh.”
I’ve been lyin’ to them all
I don’t need it anymore
Don’t you worry about me
I’ll be fine if I can breathe
I’ve been out it for too long
Taking shit for how I’m wrong
How I’m wrong
Always wrong
You pushed yourself off the couch with a string of curse words, moving into the kitchen to grab yourself something to drink. You sighed and grabbed a cup, filling it up with milk as you leaned into the counter.
You stared out the window in front of you. Metropolis was beautiful, way better than Gotham. At least here we have a guy who can protect us, rather than in Gotham where there’s some deranged guy dressed as a bat.
“Batman,” You snorted, “What a stupid name.”
Take me back to the basics and the simple life
Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease
Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
“I didn’t think that you wanted this.” You finally spoke. The shock of the question finally subsided, allowing you to pry into his mind.
Bruce moved to sit up beside you, allowing you to lean into him as he wrapped an arm around your shoulder, “I love you.”
You smiled. It wasn’t the answer you were looking for, but it was the perfect answer.
“So-”
“Yes.” You cut him off. “Yes, I will marry you.”
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
(Take me back to the basics and the simple life)
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
(Tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease)
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
(Your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby)
Holdin’ on tight and sleepin’ at night
“Fucking, Bruce.” You grumbled. “Asks me to marry him then breaks up with me. Asshole.”
