Well Deviantart makes money from the pictures you submit. The reason they get views is for the art that is displayed, the reason they get money is from the views, as they have adverts on the site as well as people paying subscriptions. The only way that Deviantart could do this was to not have adverts and to not have subscriptions, but then Deviantart is a huge site and costs money to maintain and run, so it needs to make profit somehow. Therefore it IS illegal. Use your brain you twit.

1. Either they pay royalties to the people OR
2. They change it in such a way it doesn't breach the copyright law. You might of noticed that parodies aren't that similar to the characters but you can still recognise them. There are certain ways to get around copyright laws, but just copy and pasting the exact same thing is obviously breeching copyright. You think movies are ok with people stealing their stuff? then they make no profit for it, they don't spend millions of £ making movies that they won't make profit for, don't be stupid -_-

Well according to America they want to ban everything including fan art and arrest and fine anyone who does such a thing =l Besides, it doesn't matter what America says, it matters what Deviantart says. If Deviantart doesn't want stolen art on the site you should respect the rules.

Well so far it's looking pretty fucking serious to me, they already closed down some of the biggest sites for this kind of stuff: megaupload, xepisodes...etc They gave the megaupload owners 50 years in jail

If you post anything that isn't yours you will get in trouble with either DA or the law, you can see it written the DA rules explaining that to you, theres no way you can really argue that. It's like trying to argue that if you have sex you're still a virgin.

Well, apparentely, movie images that you take yourself on VLC is also considered copyright infringement. I told the DA help desk that it should be protected by fair use laws, but they tell me that since they are private website, they reserve the right to demand a permission form.

Motivational/Demotivational posters are legal but only if people use images that they own or have permission to use. If they use TV/Movie screenshots (the biggest amount of theft), game screenshots, or images/art they took from a simple google image search and they didn't create it, they are committing copyright infringement.
If you read DA's policy/FAQ on Fair Use, it is clear, they will not allow it as an excuse and have every right to do so.
I like posters and made a few with permission from the original image owners.
Someone used the old "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster for a motivational poster. Guess what? They are ok since it is not a copyright image. It is old enough to be ok for use in any way.
People taking screenshots of Full Metal Alchemist are stealing and are reported quicker than a New York minute.

I've seen people at conventions sell pictures and other merchendise of existing characters that they made themselves. I've heard trollz try to justify this by saying that the venders made these things themselves. However, wouldn't using the design of someone elses character w/o permission to make money be a tad worse then posting images for free online to make a joke?
