Description
9 x 12" GraphiteWatercolor Paper (don't ask)
So I don't hate it.
That has to count for something.
I thought this would be quicker and easier than it was, but it wasn't deadly. It got a bit boring in certain parts, but overall I think I'd like to draw glass again... I'm annoyed that the white didn't come out white with the scan, but what can I do.
And man, graphite pencils are demon spawn sometimes, but had to use them here. I don't know if I could have done this in conte unless I would have gone way bigger in size.
Oh, and the reference picture was found on Stock.Xchng [link]
And I don't know if this category is right either.
Hope you like it.

Aww thank you! I know what you mean, it's pretty frustrating. Gets boring, since it's the same old shadow all over the place. Ah well, I'm glad I did it, and I'll probably try it again one day.
It's not as bad as it seems, honestly

I'd be a monkey's uncle before I had the patience to draw something like this, which is what makes it even more impressive. Now, I have a new favourite word, which a friend of mine uses to describe absolutely anything and everything. To cut a long story short, this drawing is SENSATIONAL!!! And that means, of course, that it's anything but a dog's breakfast!

Very nice work. Studies of glass are not unlike self portraits...each time you do one, the outcome is different. It would be very interesting to see this a second time around.

Thank you. I can guarantee I won't be trying this one again, and I know for a fact it would look different. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea though, it would look better haha.

Although they were not initially studies, I found that when I have needed to repaint a piece, my entire work approach would change. In most, if not all cases, the outcome was dramatically different while serving as a great lesson regarding something I had taken for granted.

Looks like I could pick it up right in front of me! Very super-realistic!
I did a study of glasses once, and mine pales in comparison to this... It looks like I drew it in kindergarten compared to this. Great work!!
And [I know I'm not supposed to ask] in the world did you use watercolor paper!!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
EuroFoxx In reply to kaedralynn [2008-02-19 01:39:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks lovely, I'm glad you like it
And I bet your glass was nowhere near as bad as you're describing, it's not possible from you.
*sigh* And I used watercolor paper because I thought it would be textured enough that the black tones would stick nicely, but not so textured that it would cause the same problems that I had with my eye drawing. I didn't count on the lead wanting to chew up the paper though
I'll have to try some other type of paper next time

This is a really impressive study, you've got great concentration and observation skills, I don't think I'd be able to avoid the fidgets or the temptation to just go do something else doing this complex a drawing, and you've done it so convincingly and powerfully. it's only at full view that you can tell this isn't a photo. Brilliant!
As to the category, I don't know what 'technical drawings' would cover, probably part designs and blueprints and suchlike. They don't have an observational drawing Cat as far as I'm aware.

Thank you very much for the wonderful comment, I appreciate it very much
And trust me, the fidgets and temptation was there! It always comes, especially with graphite
The thing about this one was that it got pretty boring about half way through, so I had to really buck up and git 'er done... I think what helped was the fact that it's not as big as I usually work, so it didn't take as long as it could have
I thought about putting this under "Still Life", but it isn't one. Touch stuff, that categorizing.

PoisonRemedy In reply to EuroFoxx [2008-02-19 07:29:00 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the categories are pretty vague at best, and seem mostly pointless as I don't know anybody who really browses using a specific category. I might be wrong on that front but I know I don't go out ever looking for a specific kind of art through the category system, I normally browse either by artist or by using the search engine.
No problem, I was totally stunned by the piece and I had to let you know how great it was I haven't done much observational stuff for a long time, largely cos of the whole 'mid-piece-boredom' factor, after staring at the same object for about an hour or so my eyes start locking up and my brain wants out. Maybe I should do a few studies again.
Really enjoying your gallery so far, glad we met

EuroFoxx In reply to PoisonRemedy [2008-02-19 13:39:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I agree, I don't know of anyone using them to browse that specifically, except maybe for tutorials.
And the observational stuff is something that I really should be doing more of too, but I've got that same special brand of art ADD that makes me lose interest and want to do something else at about the halfway mark

Yeah I know the feeling, there are a few things I should practice but I get so bored doing them that I'd need someone behind me clipping me round the head every time I looked away from them lol. It's all kinda dull stuff like drawing more complex backdrop objects and the suchlike...I mean, who wants to practice drawing sofas all the time lol. Anyways sorry for whining lol *gets slapped round the head*

EuroFoxx In reply to PoisonRemedy [2008-02-20 02:02:24 +0000 UTC]
Lol I think I'd rather sit in on a physics class then practice drawing sofas over and over again. I definitely get where you're coming from, I think it takes a lot of discipline to keep doing the boring things over and over and over . . .

PoisonRemedy In reply to EuroFoxx [2008-02-20 17:41:49 +0000 UTC]
I try and aim at getting the boring things to just look right...so long as I can do that I'm happy even if it's missing a few minor creases or whatever, so long as that damn sofa looks like a sofa, then it's all good lol. Looking forward to seeing your new work, and it's nice to have a natter with you about these things! ^_^

lol yup! That's why I try to fill the foreground as much as possible, as you've probably seen by now. I also like black paper for that, because it's like it's own background
