I have, I find all sorts of news on recent movements, but surprisingly nothing about the basics, about what it really is

well all the big music companies and hollywood and movie companies basically had enough of people selling their work or downloading it and using it for free, so a law was planned to be put to congress in the US to censor a hell of a lot of stuff on the internet, but also hold the host sites that contained copyright material responsible. So websites such as youtube and facebook could be at serious risk of being heavily censored, even just you filming a home video and having music playing in the background will be deemed illegal, even if you never meant for it to have music purposely, and even the websites could be shut down, which is why megaupload in newzealand was stormed 2 days ago by the FBI and all of the staff extradited because they had loaned american servers, and now the FBI and government have every IP and detail of people who downloaded, paid money to or uploaded to that website. Which i'd imagine a hell of a lot of people will have done. And it's not just affecting the US, a guy here in the UK had a website called TV Shack with indirectly linked to Megaupload and he was detained in London and apparently was supposed to be extradited and detained indefinitely in the US, but apparently he got released on bail of #3000, but it's crazy. And that single American mother who got fined something like 1.5million dollars for downloading 24 copyrighted songs, it's awful.
And there is word that they will be storming so many other sites which we could have all used. It's scary.

Wow, now I understand why so many people are protesting. Some rules clearly come from good intentions, but they get taken to extremes, and people end up suffering that really didn't do anything wrong

it's like sopa and pipa, but international it's the Anti Counterfitting Trade Agreement.
it has worse problems for the internet than SOPA and PIPA, like making it so internet providers have to either implement a 3 strikes rule (3 accusations of copyright infringement and they HAVE to drop your service and BAN you from their internet) or face being legaly liable for their users.
but it goes beyond that, there are sections that would effect things like generic prescriptions that almost everyone uses at some point in their life.
unfortunantly, ACTA is being kept a secret, all we know about it is what little has been leaked, and previous versions of it.
whenever one of the participating countries is asked to reveal what is IN ACTA they get some BS responce. Like in the US both Bush and Obama have said that revealing what is in the trade agreement would threaten national security if made public. Or in Canada, where someone asked for a partial censored copy of the agreement (with the sensitive info blacked out, but the rest open) and they got a document with the header "ACTA" and the entire rest of the document was black.
coming up soon is Europes vote to be a preliminary participant (Signing the treaty would not actually change the laws, but it would say that they will start putting changes through their system when the final version is reached)
it all sounds like a nutcase conspiracy, but it's actually not, just go look at the wikipedia page on it [link]
it makes SOPA and PIPA look like a kiddy pool next to the ocean, i mean really, a treaty that would effect almost every aspect of life and the world governments are all keeping their people in the dark about it, they'll probably not release any info right up until the last minute so they can say that it was "made public" before votes are cast.
