Description
I've referenced them constantly in my other character designs! And here they finally are!
The Progenitor-class probes, also known as manmakers, Matriarchs, Matrons of Civilization and Mother-Gods, were artificially intelligent, modular, and absurdly capable Von-Neumann constructs designed to spread human life across the galaxy, representing the pinnacle of technology of the time. Directive:
1. Find a planet.
2. Analyze the environment to test suitability for human life.
3. If unsuitable, use raw materials to construct more manmakers and return to space.
4. If suitable, use raw materials to construct more manmakers and begin incubating a population of humans tailor-made to their environment!
5. Raise and protect them until they reach sexual maturity.
6. Return to space. Repeat.
Over immense spans of time, their digital personalities were known to develop pesky quirks and flaws. Some would gain preferences for creating humans with certain features, like wings or flippers. Some may have become resentful or abusive towards their offspring, resulting in stunted people. Some went on futile quests to create perfect humans, while others would forgo their purpose entirely. Some would befriend one another, some would become enemies. Some would even encounter planets already visited by prior manmakers and exterminate the populations already thriving there.
Whatever the outcome, the matter is that many planets (read: MILLIONS) were tried, and comparatively few resulted in civilizations that would thrive beyond a few thousand years. The people they made would have no way of contacting their kin on another planet, or even knowing of their existence.
Most importantly, they give the term Cube Mom a new meaning.

extremely inefficient and ineffective colonization tools, huh :/

Can it really be helped? Interstellar colonization is super tricky, involving huge distances and huge timescales. Von Neumann probes are probably the most likely method of colonization.

true, but then atleast a few should stay to help the new colony out.
