Description Page ae-3 of a book of etchings I'm making, with the comparison of earthly life to that from the alternate earth, AE-467d2, in order to illustrate an argument taking place within its pages between a skeptic of life on other worlds and a supporter of the theory that says we can't be alone in the universe(s). Hope the rest of the book is this cool *happywithprint*. The animal plate is distressed etching and a ton of drypoint, while the text plate is distressed and intentional-incorrectly applied photoetching.

...oh yeah, so anyway, this is two 5x7 zinc plates with one being sepia, and the other black ink. This is my proof, I wonder if it'll look nicer on Arches or Reeves bfk.

edit: larger version.

i wish our art rom had all that awesome stuff. i'll have to wait for college, i guess.

but i do think that we can manage the monoprint! though usually im not so keen towards the sketchy surrealist style...must have too much of a perfectionist in me. but you never know. I'll probably experiment after i finish my next painting, so monoprints will definetly go on my list!

Yay for sketchiness! At least in my book. I'm fond of it. ; ) But my pencils are usually not so sketchy as all that. Experimenting, even with things you normally wouldn't like, though... this is a good thing that'll broaden your experience.

College is most fun. ; ) Where ya going?

Chicago, hopefully. I'd love to be an illustrator, but im afraid its in the same way a six year old would love to be a princess...
which is why ill probably study art history, hehe. its all still art to me, and maybe i can get into restoring!

You know, I agree with you entirely about creating art instead of simply learning about it. But the way I figure it, if Art History appeases the-parentals-with-the-checkbook, then I'll take Art History. I don't hate it, and I'm actually rather enamoured with the various artistic eras. It's not creation, but hey, nobody told me I couldn't double major! And Art History might be one of those marketable skills they're always blathering on about, right? Right? Yeah, so I may be deluding myself a little...double majoring at a school like Chicago may be a little suicidal.

Aw, but there's nothing wrong with that dream to be a princess! When kids give up their dreams, they lose a sense of wonder that I think most people should do better to keep. *nod* ; ) If you try hard enough, you could get your princessdom. Art History's fun, I suppose... but nothing beats creating work. ; p I'm biased. Though I know someone in the sculpture dep't. at Chicago, so I know it's a good school.

Ever worked with ImageOn plates? I wrote it on acetate/transparency, flipped it over and exposed it onto the plate. ImageOn is a nifty film that you adhere to a zinc or copper plate and shoot on like photo printing paper. Developed it intentionally longer than it required, so the film started coming off the plate in areas, and then etched the zinc. Printed that plate over top of the drypoint one with the drawings.

Well, it's not an actual photography process, but it is a photo process, being light-based. It's easier than it sounds. Teh hard part is getting the thin film stuff to adhere to your plates.

I really like the fishes. They're cool.
This is a piece I wish I could view in its original form. I'd love to be able to look closely at the textures. It's like something from some crazy cool sketchbook, which makes me want to have it in my hands. Some things are much better in reality than in a digital form.

damn bro. the concept alone is excellant!
it's almost like you're 'role-playing'. and please don't be offended at that!
i mean,...i think artists do alot of role-playing. putting themselves in the shoes of
their characters. that's where alot of the expressiveness comes from. at least that's what
i do when i'm creating some of my more fantasy-like stuff.
anyway,...aestitically it's excellant as well! you've nailed the look of antiquity!
and the little etchings are great!
fascinating project!
looking great!

evanjensen In reply to dholms [2005-05-31 06:44:19 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks, I think... roleplaying as whom/what, though?

I was essentially doing that for my thesis. I was the recon-artist for a team of interdimensional planetary explorers, and sending stuff back through the wormhole to terra prima. But that was a different (although intrinsically related) project. After all, that snail creature is one of the fauna from the other earth we were exploring.

; ) I'm quite happy with how this turned out, yes. Though it looks amazing in color.

I'm a sucker for BFK Rives, but I think Arches would be nice for this print. Did you end up making a decision?

Hehe. Everyone loves that fish. My other plate has dragonflies and my slugbird. I'll get a scan of it up here eventually. *nod* It's in a show right now, so gotta wait til it's taken down. Pretty soon. ; ) I adore etching. It's muchly my favorite medium right now, though for busines purposes I prefer watercolor or acrylic wash.

Um, well, this is on the 90 lb Arches, I think. I forget... The version in the show is on that greenish-brown Reeves stuff.

Godspell was a good show. Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe was not though, it was a pretty bad script. We did a couple of cool things though. We made all of these animal masks which were pretty good for a high school junior's early work. : )
I remember Tumnus having a bad reaction to the make-up, his face turned beat red. So we just stuck horns on his head because he was red enough to look fantastical if not a little demonic. Hard to believe how long a time ago that was...

Hmm. One day... like when I get around to seeing "The Producers". To date my favorite shows were Les Mis and The Lion King. That costume design... man. I hear last year's Washington Shakespeare production of "Midsummer Night's Dream" was pretty amazing, set-wise, but I couldn't get tix in time. Ah well. If anyone ever wants me to do more theatre work, I'll do it, but I haven't since set-painting in highschool. That WAS a while ago, yeah... *le sigh*

Ha, well, I hope he survived the performances! I stuck horns on my head one halloween, in a business suit, with some liquor and my goatee... modern day Pan didn't seem to get understood. They all thought I was Lucifer. So sad.

That was an odd day, if anything I actually should have had some coffee. Besides I have resigned from my former occupation as a barista. I know sell media at Best Buy. : )
Chomsky was actually very interesting, but he had that dry rambling speaking voice that you had to work at to listen too. But of course it is worth the effort. If I could condense what he said in brutish terms, the jist of it - that really the current president is not the radical some would think, but his actions are right in keeping with American Imperialism, a tradition that our leadership class has continued since, well, practically the birth of the nation. Which is quite true when you look at our history in Hawaii, the Phillipines, etc.
I thought it was humorous when he said, 'don't be fooled by the president's affected apeech and mannerisms. Graduates from Yale don't behave that way. ' Which goes to show, the surface of politics is a three ring circus contrived to distract us from, well, whatever we apparently have to be distarcted from.
In a nutshell, a wordy nutshell. : )

I just quoted that bit about Yale to miss lisa, but I couldn't recall where I'd read it.
