Description Page ae-3 of a book of etchings I'm making, with the comparison of earthly life to that from the alternate earth, AE-467d2, in order to illustrate an argument taking place within its pages between a skeptic of life on other worlds and a supporter of the theory that says we can't be alone in the universe(s). Hope the rest of the book is this cool *happywithprint*. The animal plate is distressed etching and a ton of drypoint, while the text plate is distressed and intentional-incorrectly applied photoetching.

...oh yeah, so anyway, this is two 5x7 zinc plates with one being sepia, and the other black ink. This is my proof, I wonder if it'll look nicer on Arches or Reeves bfk.

edit: larger version.

All the work we see of his is from a little later in life so I'm sure you'll be there before you know it, you're quite close as it is

I dont suppose there's anyway you could produce a transcript of the text. I'm really quite interested to know what it says as the rest of the piece is so original!

Hrm. I'd have to find the original mylars of it, since I don't recall what it says off hand. We'll see! Thank you.

It bares a frightening similarity to a face, with the ting on top as the eye, the fish as the nose, the thing under the fish as the lips, and the words as cheek shadows and/or hair. Looks realy cool.

I like the sketchiness of it and the way the text is working. Is this the final proof? It'd be nice if you could clean it up just the slightest bit so we could see the drawings a little better. I like that it has an old drawing feel though, like we just picked up a journal from decades ago. Like it lots.

thank you for explaining! I'll mention it to my Adv. Studio teacher the next time he wants to know what new techniques we want to learn....i imagine its awful complicated, though.

evanjensen In reply to hopelessshade [2006-03-02 09:24:52 +0000 UTC]

Traditional etching involves nitric or ferric acid baths and metal plates and whatnot, yes... complicated and toxic. But they have things called er... "cintron" plates? I think? They're polymer plates instead of metal, and you can scribe right into them. Of course, you could also use plexiglass, but these are softer. You run the inked plate and (soaked) paper through a press. Your school'd have to have an etching press.

BUT! A cool, easier way to do it is without the scribing, like in [link]

That's monoprint, and is basically inking an entire plate and then wiping highlight areas clear, on a smooth plexiglass plate and then running IT and soaked paper through a press. Hint: Q-tips are especially useful for detail rendering. And textures show up well. You don't need a press even, you can rub the paper over it, much like you'd rub say... crayon rubbings. Only, with something like a wooden spoon.
