She was so small, so fragile.
Yet her smile beamed wider, brighter, than anything they'd seen in a long time.
As if the land wasn't scorched by flames.
As if their kin hadn't fallen just moments before.
As if the food was wrought with blight, sending so man to their graves that coroners rarely held funerals anymore.

She made it all feel okay, even for that split moment, things were nice. calm, happy.
It was in that same moment that the two would do everything in their power to keep her safe, and
to make sure that she felt loved.

Equestria had fallen onto hard times after many of their ties with the neighboring kingdoms went sour, but especially the Crystal Empire, as much of their imports, particularly food, came from the outermost northern kingdom.
They weren't nearly as well off as the rest of the Kingdom in terms of stocks of food and supplies because not only was the neighboring cities at their limits in terms of sharing items, but their import from other regions had been cut off for the better part of a year now.
Yet famine was least of their worries.
Troubling relations brought frequent stints of conflict to their door, and it wasn't uncommon to initiate battle left and right with just about any kingdom around them. They'd won a few, but lost far too many to deem themselves triumphant, and with all of this going on, it wouldn't be hard to believe that it would take a lot out of the co-rulers.
Of course, that isn't to say that they still wouldn't want to start their own family.
It was something they'd always wanted, though looking back on it now, it seems like a far more selfish decision in the long run.
Yet despite this, both Shining and Cadence can't deny that their little bundle of joy is one of the few things they can say brings them joy, though for little Flurry, this would inevitably become her bane.
