My own take on the Monsterverse, using the established films and canon, and on how I'd do the series should Legendary's license with Toho remain after 2020.

Phase One

Godzilla (2014): Joe Brody witnesses the destruction of the Janjira Nuclear Power Plant, losing his wife. Fifteen years later, a paranoid Joe is convinced the meltdown was no accident, convincing his son Ford, a US explosives disposal officer, to help him investigate. They discovers the quarantine zone is a ruse, hiding an top secret government facility in the ruins, guarding an enormous insect chrysalis that hatches into an equally enormous MUTO (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism). During its escape, Joe is killed. Ford learns of Monarch, an international organization that studies the MUTO, ancient super species that have slept dormant for years. Amongst them is Godzilla, an enormous reptile that acts as a balancer of nature, killing other MUTO that awaken. Ford helps in transporting a nuclear bomb to San Francisco, the navy planning to use it to destroy Godzilla and the two MUTO that feed on nuclear energy. During a battle, Godzilla slays both MUTO before departing into the sea.

Kong: Skull Island (2017): Bill Randa, leader of Monarch, arranges for an expedition to the remote Skull Island. He is joined by other Monarch scientists, LandSat representatives, tracker James Conrad, photojournalist Mason Weaver, and the American helicopter squadron, the “Sky Devils”, led by Lt. Colonel Packard. At the island, the squadron bombs it, confirming Monarch’s Hollow Earth theory. They are attacked by King Kong, an enormous ape who guards the island’s ecosystem from the Skullcrawlers that live beneath. The crew are scattered, eventually meeting Hank Marlow, an American fighter pilot stranded on the island since World War II. Packard insists on killing Kong, but Marlow warns it will let the Skullcrawlers loose. Most of the crew are killed during the journey to the island’s northern point to reach a rendezvous, including Randa. The alpha Skullcrawler emerges, Kong killing the insane Packard beforehand, and then eviscerates the alpha. The survivors reach the meeting point and return home, Marlow reuniting with his wife and son. In a post-credits scene, Conrad and Weaver are indoctrinated into Monarch, discovering the existence of other enormous MUTO.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019): This is my interpretation of the film’s events. Five years after Godzilla appeared, Monarch is now public and watching several dormant MUTO (now Titans) around the world. Dr. Emma Russell, a Monarch paleobiologist monitoring a dormant Mothra, develops an ability to communicate with Titans using bioacoustics. She, and her empathic daughter Madison, are kidnapped by the Red Bamboo, a rogue faction of Monarch, led by an elderly James Conrad. Conrad believes Emma’s invention could control the Titans – a better option than Serizawa’s belief to “let them fight”. The Russells are taken to a hidden Monarch outpost in Antarctica, finding the frozen King Ghidorah, powerful enough to defeat Godzilla.

Madison manages to contact her estranged father Mark, and Monarch, to rescue them. Emma, a bit of a fatalist, believes Ghidorah’s release might restore nature’s ecosystem at the cost of humanity, putting her at odds with her daughter. Dr. Serizawa finds Ghidorah’s ancient temple, discovering his sheer power could create a worldwide super storm. Legends depict three “guardians” – Godzilla, Mothra, and the volcanic Rodan – defeating Ghidorah, and could do so again. Monarch awaken Rodan and Mothra, while Godzilla follows their submarine to Antarctica. Emma and Conrad awaken Ghidorah, who proves to be uncontrollable, killing the latter. Godzilla tries to stop Ghidorah, but is crushed by the dragon. Ghidorah takes flight to destroy the stratosphere with his super storm.

While Monarch has much inner fighting, the main cast track the other Titans, who meet in the ruins of Washington DC to fight. Rodan isn’t much help, while Mothra puts up a good fight but ultimately dies, but blows one of Ghidorah’s heads off beforehand. Godzilla shows up, having fed on a nuclear waste site on the way, and teams up with Rodan to fight Ghidorah, causing mass devastation. They successfully defeat Ghidorah with help from the military, and both Titans depart, injured but alive. Emma and Madison make amends, while Serizawa is left disillusioned by his faith in Godzilla, owing to the devastation he has left. However, the elderly Houston Brooks, former director of Monarch, suggests “hiring” another king to fight Godzilla: Kong.

Kong vs. Godzilla (2020): The big crossover of Phase One. As Godzilla trashes more cities to kill other Titans, Monarch finally decide they should put him down. Brooks reveals his son, Aaron, has been trapped on Skull Island for years after going on an unauthorised expeditions years ago. An entire fleet venture to the island to retrieve Aaron, discovering the climate has grown and changed, as has Kong, now aged and as tall as Godzilla. Skullcrawlers escape into the Earth, pursued by Kong, winding up in Japan. Monarch see this as an opportunity to have Kong defeat Godzilla. Madison returns in support of Godzilla, while the Brooks’ back Kong. Meanwhile, Dr. Serizawa constructs a tool to destroy both if necessary – the Oxygen Destroyer, which can destroy oxygen in an aquatic environment. While Monarch have their own civil war, Godzilla and Kong kill the Skullcrawlers, and have an epic brawl across Tokyo, until Serizawa arrives and activates the Oxygen Destroyer at the cost of his life. Both Titans vanish underwater due to the weapon’s effects, and after a moment, a badly injured Kong rises from the sea, apparently victorious, and swims away. There is no sign of Godzilla, and Serizawa’s sacrifice leaves Monarch in pieces. Madison, however, stands before Tokyo Bay, gazing out to the sea, implying Godzilla is alive.

Phase Two

Mothra (2022): A solo movie for Mothra. Though the character died in King of the Monsters, Monarch discover she left behind two eggs. However, one is stolen by a corporate douchebag, Atticus Zimmerman, who runs Happy Faces Enterprises, a theme park conglomerate. He wants to raise the unborn Titan from scratch as a zoo attraction. Emma and Madison Russell appear as main characters, accompanied by twin girls, Yui and Sho, who worship Mothra (serving as a nod to Mothra’s fairy guardians). The twins warn that the eggs contain two new larvae, but while one is Mothra, the other is Battra, a vicious devilish creature in Mothra’s lore. Battra just happens to have been in the stolen egg. Both eggs hatch at the same time, introducing a new Mothra, and the destructive Battra. Both eventually become moths and engage in a spectacular aerial battle, but it ends up levelling forests and towns. Battra is defeated, but Mothra spares him, picking up her brother and flies away to parts unknown. To differentiate Battra from Mothra, Battra can emit poisonous spores and chemicals which can trigger napalm-like blasts, and has a more bat-like appearance, hence the name.

Kong Returns (2023): This film takes inspiration from the original King Kong, and Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Carl Denham, an ambitious documentarian, sets out on a private expedition to Skull Island to capture the environment and Kong himself. Naturally, this proves to be a disaster, with Carl and his crew being shipwrecked. The group encounter more horrors of the island, a territorial Gorosaurus, and remnants of Red Bamboo, who have set up a secret outpost on the island. They have stolen Emma’s technology, experimenting on the monsters to master the theory of mind control. They have succeeded in controlling Ebirah, an enormous crustacean that destroys any passing ships, including Carl’s. Kong eventually appears to take back his island, killing Ebirah, and beats Gorosaurus into submission. The Red Bamboo agents are apprehended when Monarch arrives, and decide to occupy their outpost. Carl is apprehended, but he manages to smuggle his filmed footage off the island.

Rodan (2023): Rodan’s film would be a little different, and not Monarch-heavy. The story would focus on an American family on vacation in Hawaii, a daring trip since the islands were terrorised by the MUTO nine years ago. Unfortunately, Rodan arrives on the archipelago to hibernate within one of the volcanoes, causing mass mayhem, even causing an eruption. Rodan’s appearance also awakens a swamp of ancient dragonflies, including their queen, Megaguirus. The movie would be from the point of view of the different family members as they try to survive the disaster before them, and maybe even mend their unity along the way. Rodan eventually kills Megaguirus, and completely reshapes the islands. Rodan departs, and is seen in a post-credits scene arriving on Skull Island, which one Monarch scientist dubs “Monster Island”.

Monster Island (2024): The film takes places shortly after Rodan, with numerous Titans travelling to Skull Island via sea, air, and the Hollow Earth tunnels, and Monarch have no idea why. Kong is trying to crush all of the intruders from invading his territory, but most are quicker than he is. This allows for a few cameos and appearances from iconic monsters like Anguirus, Rodan, the Kamacuras, the giant spider Kumonga, Gorosaurus, and some more obscure ones too. The endless brawls between the Titans threatens the island’s survival, and those of the humans living there. Well, Godzilla makes his triumphant return, having been sleeping underwater for a few years to recover from the Oxygen Destroyer’s effects, and he is here to clean up shop. Godzilla and Kong square off again, only to be interrupted by an ancient creature slumbering deep within the island’s tunnels: Obsidius. The dormant monster has been emitting a strange beacon only the Titans could detect. Godzilla and Kong battle the volcanic monster with help from Rodan, reducing him to ash. Godzilla decides to stay on the island, much to Kong’s apparent hostility, and the island becomes the central point for many monsters. Thus, the island is rechristened Monster Island.

Phase Three

Godzilla Unleashed (2025): Phase Three begins with a big monster movie, taking inspiration from GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. The film introduces Miki Saegusa, a character from the Toho films, who displays psychic powers. She sees visions of three Titans awakening to terrorise the UK  – Baragon, Manda, and Varan. The three monsters eventually emerge from the Yorkshire Dales, Loch Ness, and Mount Snowden and all head for London. By chance, Godzilla is in the area and is drawn to the three Titans. Their fight leads to most of London getting trashed, and Baragon and Manda die, whilst Varan escapes. Miki is invited to join Monarch. Elsewhere, Monarch scientists plot to create a weapon to combat Godzilla, nicknamed “Project Kiryu”.

The Legend of King Caesar (2025): A film set far into the past. It opens in the present, with Miki explaining her ancestors originate from Okinawa, which has its own Titan guardian, King Caesar. The film borrows from the Toho film The Birth of Japan, and incorporates some more rarer Kaiju from Toho’s pantheon. The film is set in ancient Japan, and would allow Miki’s actress to appear as an ancestor. Japan is terrorised by a variety of Titans, led by the eight-headed Orochi, a legendary monster of Japanese folklore. Orochi has its own clan of monsters, electrifying Shiigan, dino-scorpion Vagnosaurus, brutish Jyarumu, and the agile Balkzardan. The rulers of Okinawa awaken the hibernating King Caesar to defend their home when Orochi’s group heads there. Caesar manages to defeat the monsters one by one, aided by an ancestor of Mothra. A blinded, one-headed Orochi drowns when it falls into a deep underwater abyss, and Caesar returns to slumber, but will awake in the future again.

Mothra Rebirth (2026): Mothra returns for a sequel, taking inspiration from the Mothra Rebirth trilogy. The film explores Mothra’s mythology and history a little more, reintroducing a now adult Madison Russell, and the twins Yui and Sho, as they uncover an ancient grove deep within the Yunnan Province, containing an enormous egg even bigger than Mothra’s. The twin assume it may belong to the legendary “Leo Mothra”, the progenitor for Mothra’s line. However, it turns out to belong to Dagahra, an enormous flying reptile that dwarfs both Mothra and Battra. The two moths battle Dagahra, but they are severely wounded. Battra transfers his energy to Mothra, transforming her into resembling Leo Mothra, killing Dagahra. The two moths carry Dagahra out into the sea, but the wounded Battra is too weak to carry on, and drops into the sea with Dagahra, both dying. Mothra flies away to the grove and falls asleep. In a final scene, Monarch workers are seen removing the Godzilla skeleton found by Dr. Serizawa at the start of the first film.

The Mighty Kong (2027): One thing I really want to see happen is for Kong to end up in New York, as a homage to his 1933 film. One things that is introduced is the idea that Godzilla isn’t the only one of his kind, so both Kong and the Monarch agents get a surprise when they find an egg, that hatches into Minilla, his egg dormant for so long. Kong initially is hostile, but Minilla warms to him. Minilla is repeatedly attacked by the bullying Gabara, but both Titans and other Skull Island fauna are taken captive by the Red Bamboo, who seek to contain and study Titans elsewhere. Kong (and Monarch) give chase, discovering the Red Bamboo utilise an underwater mobile base that is undetectable.

Amongst the imprisoned monsters is a peculiar one who resembles a mix of a reptile and a mantis. You’ll probably recognise this monster as Gigan, in the process of being surgically altered with cybernetics. Red Bamboo have been trying to create a perfect assassin to kill other Titans. Kong trashes the place to rescue Minilla, letting the Titans and monsters escape. Minilla beats Gabara, but doesn’t kill him. The film climaxes in Kong vs. Gigan vs. the US air force in Manhattan, with Kong chasing Gigan up the Empire State Building (or the Freedom Tower since it’s taller), and ends with Kong winning, but Gigan flees. Kong, Minilla, Gabara, and others are escorted back to Monster Island, where Kong finds Godzilla waiting to collect Minilla. There is a hint of respect between the two.

Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (2028): The results of Project Kiryu are revealed, the impressive MechaGodzilla! This may not sound like a realistic move for this MonsterVerse, but the character is hugely popular and should be included. MechaGodzilla’s structure is built around the salvaged skeleton of the other Godzilla, and uses enhanced technology salvaged from Red Bamboo. It isn’t as big as Godzilla, but is strong enough to fight him. It is manpowered and aided by an advanced AI. Titanosaurus has a minor role so Godzilla has someone else to fight until MechaGodzilla intervenes. The lead pilot is Colonel Paul Reaver, hellbent on getting revenge on Godzilla after his family died in San Francisco. The rest of his crew are loyal but also concerned with Reaver’s sanity. Mothra shows up to aid Godzilla, but to also return the bones to the earth. Rodan and Anguirus also appear as opponents to MechaGodzilla. Together, the monsters defeat MechaGodzilla, and Reaver ends up committing suicide by flying the robot at Godzilla, but its head is blown up by Godzilla’s atomic breath. For the first time, Godzilla deliberately attacks humans.

Destroy All Monsters (2029): The semi-Infinity War level grand finale of the MonsterVerse. Monarch and the world are on full alert as Godzilla has turned against them. MechaGodzilla is recovered and rebuilt to combat Godzilla, using an experimental energy cannon. However, Monarch outposts worldwide are being targeted by strange creatures. Their source of origin is Tokyo Bay. In short, they are the evolving forms of Destoroyah, once micro-organisms mutated by the Oxygen Destroyer. An all-star team of Titans swarm to stop Godzilla and the Destoroyah spawn, including Kong, Rodan, Mothra, Anguirus, Minilla, and King Caesar. Destoroyah evolves into its final form and kicks the other Titans to go the curb, while MechaGodzilla is used to deter Godzilla. Several characters die, as Destoroyah rampages through Tokyo.

Gigan shows up and battles Mothra. The goddess drags Gigan up into the stratosphere in an attempt to kill him, but finds Gigan can survive in the thin air – he isn’t from Earth. Gigan tries to escape but Mothra drags him back down, both crashing into Tokyo like a meteorite, seemingly dying. In the end, Godzilla, Kong, and MechaGodzilla are the only ones left against Destoroyah. During the fight, Godzilla loses an arm, and Godzilla is impaled through the gut when he is charging up his atomic breath, setting the King of the Monsters on fire.

Just then, Destoroyah is struck by a blast of light, signalling the arrival of a revived King Ghidorah, alive all this time, possessing slowly regenerative powers. MechaGodzilla freezes Destoroyah, and the monster falls apart. Godzilla, mortally wounded, passes away, and Ghidorah flies away without harming anyone. Kong, Rodan, and Minilla are the only confirmed survivors of the Titans, though Mothra is implied to live. With Godzilla dead, the world changes, though Minilla may grow up to inherit his father’s power…

Beyond* Gamera (2030) - An unlikely film since Gamera is owned by another company, but it would be cool to have the flying turtle hero in the universe.

* Mothra III (2031) - Sees Mothra face off against the giant beetle Megalon. Also introduces the Earth Defence Force, who use Mogeura, an experimental robot.

* Kong vs. Ghidorah (2032) - A Kong sequel seeing him try to cope with one arm, his power on Monster Island waning. King Ghidorah arrives to challenge the ape for the true title of king.

* Jet Jaguar (2032) - Yes, really. A lighthearted sci-fi comedy about the size-changing robotic hero Jet Jaguar, battling Megalon and a returning Gigan.

* The Atragon (2033) - A semi-remake of the 1963 film, introducing the Atragon ship, built by the EDF.

* Godzilla: Resurrection (2034) - Focuses on Minilla as he becomes the second Godzilla, going up against Biollante, a unique plant-like Titan said to have be possessed by a scientist's dead daughter (hence "Resurrection"). Marks the 20th anniversary of the MonsterVerse

I hope we can see something this awesome put to film.

I was a little disappointed to not see Destroyah appear for Monster Island, but then you brought it for Destroy All Monsters. And have him actually kill Godzilla no less to set up a new era.

Destoroyah had to be the Thanos of this project. Yeah, Ghidorah is the kingpin of villains, but Destoroyah sorta killed Godzilla.

Nice. Can you do one with Transformers? Maybe it could start with the Bumblebee movie if it starts a reboot.
