good level of lighting, the background seems to merge with his hair and shadow, so all you can make out of the expression is his eyes.

Interesting use of lighting. I love the way the deep shadow seems to reflect depression and angst, but the way the light shines on his face sends out a hopefuly, "light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel" message - to me, anyway. Th detail you've picked up is amazing too, and adds to the atmosphere
