Description Did you know turtles never know their parents? Flapping and pummeling out of their rubber skinned egg they discover not the kind faces of their mother and father smiling down at them in a way only turtles can. Instead they see a sandy beach and a long shuffling journey towards a rolling grey sea.

No baby turtle, dragging their soft young shell towards those waves, has ever seen their mother or father. No baby turtle got to ride the dangerous journey to the ocean on the shell of their parent. They learn to take a breath and swim through pummeling tide without the helping flipper of a father. They learn to fish and eat without their mother's keen eye and gentle head bumps. They learn to live, feed, hate, love and die all without ever crossing paths with the fateful pair that brought them into the world.

And they abandon their unhatched eggs, hidden under a layer of sand, in the exact same way their parents abandoned them.

But, in a way, I admire them. Yes, they leave their children behind without even peeking back over their shell for a second look. But at least they are honest about it. Turtles abandon their young; it has always been that way and it always will be. They don't expect to see their parents when they poke their pointed noses from their eggs; they expect the sandy beach. They don't expect a ride to the sea on a parent's back; they expect the long haul. They don't expect a father to teach them to swim; they expect to swim or drown. They don't expect a mother to help them fish; they expect to eat or starve. They don't ever expect anything. They never did. They never will.

Why would you expect anything from perfect strangers?

Why do I still expect something from the perfect strangers that left me?

I guess I just need to get a harder shell.

Oh wow..I loved that. You took an abstract idea and turned it into a tiny concrete little life story and then at the end...emotional hammer. It's almost like you just revealed one of the secrets of life.

A great bit of writing. The first half is quite inspiring, the tale of a turtle's difficult coming-of-age. But the way you tie it all together at the end, and make a meaningful parallel with human relationships, is quiet brilliant

Thank you! I'm thrilled that you liked it so much. After not doing too well in the contest I was a bit on the iffy side about whether or not it all came together the way I wanted it too. But with the support shown as I spread it around I'm thinking otherwise. Thanks again for the great comment.

Extremely gorgeous. It's sad, I really love the last few lines. The very last especially is a nice touch. Beautiful.

(late replyyy |D)

You're very welcome. This is very successful in stirring emotions, even after a few days. So I say thumbs up.

It reminds me of this almost completely unrelated poem about this turtle-mommy who lays her eggs, and leaves; it compares everything around her to being her children, the trees and such. I think I meant to say that when I first read it, haha.

Thank you so much! I'm thrilled you liked it, a was working towards it having that real 'kick' at the end but was a bit worried people would ab sail over it as they skimmed down the piece. I am SO happy you didn't do that.

This is gorgeous, I like the comparsion of your own life, to the turtles, this is such a unqiue way to look at this theme. I think it's something many people can relate to.
