Description
Somewhere, in a world that has moved on, at the point where the six Beams intersect, there stands a mythical structure(the Dark Tower)
that is said to be the centre of the universe; the axis upon which all worlds revolve. And at the top of the tower is a door marked 'Roland' ... and it is empty.
Ka like the wind ...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
My fanart of Roland of Gilead from Stephen King's the Dark Tower series. That's Roland in the foreground, a close-up of Roland and the Rose (don't ask) behind, and of course the Dark Tower itself in the background (at least, my own version of it). If you haven't read any of the books, go to your local library and borrow one (the first is titled the Gunslinger), and start reading.
I was talked into doing this by ~Mikaress , who in turn is also doing a Roland fanart on my request (read her journal). I wasn't really sure about what to do with his costume; Mr. King didn't really go into much detail about Roland's physical details (apart from his piercing blue eyes) so I wasn't sure what kind of clothes he would be wearing. This is how I envisaged him, though; based heavily upon Clint Eastwood, which in turn was largely the inspiration for King's creation of the character in the first place
One of the first proper pieces I've coloured, and I think I did a decent job. Since my Photoshop skill is crappy and I don't have a tablet, I cheated a bit ... what I did was completely shade the thing in the lineart (which I drew and shaded on paper with a 2B 0.5mm pacer, yes it was a hard and tedious process) and then, in Photoshop, I added several other layesr and coloured in the picture - but with all of the layer opacities down to only 50%, so that all the shading and lineart could be clearly seen and it didn't matter if I went over the lines (which I clearly did - you only need to magnify to see my many mistakes).
Still, I like the effect. It looks like watercolour. Gack, the Rose was so hard to draw. I had to look up at least six different reference pictures.
Tell me what you think! I reply to all comments, and take all feedback seriously (unless they're unserious feedback).

Been so long since I've read this series. This work looks amazing though! The sinister look from the shading over his face is gold.
Yeah... roses are a pain. You did a great job on this one though, the references where definitly worth it.

YES MORE DARK TOWER FANS!!!!!
I keep on giving up on the Dark Tower and then going back to it. I've been reading the Dark Tower (the seventh book) on and off for the last two months or so.....the librarians are starting to get annoyed.

I can't do crap in photoshop either, but I can shade decently so that's all that matters.

Ah, I see. Well I'm pretty sure the rose is first introduced in the third book, and then plays a significant role for the rest of the series.

I think it turned out really well. An interesting interpretation of the character. Although I believe it's mentioned he wears denim jeans and a denim shirt, so they'd most likely be blue. Also I think the brim on his hat is too large and too round. It's a bit too spanish imo.
The rose came out fantastic, and the tower is nice, even if it's not how I pictured it personally xP I think I would have cleaned up the white spaces a bit in photoshop. and maybe added a solid tone for a background.
Just trying to give some constructive criticism. No hard feelings at all.
I like the picture though, the shading is well done and the mysteriousness of it is certainly there.

I can't recall very clearly about the denim; I remember that deerskin was mentioned several times (but perhaps that was for Eddie?) so I always imagined him clad in leather. I've always prefered long-brimmed cowboy hats over short-brimmed, so this is just how I prefer it. The Rose wasn't coloured as well as I had hoped; I probably could have added more highlights. Oh well. The Tower changes depending on the viewer, I suppose. Also, I took your advice and shaded in the background; not very well, admitted, but hey it's an effort.
And thanks for the fav, bro! I considered for a really long tim whether or not to draw Roland's eyes (in which case I would have had to Photoshop them blue and change the title to "Those Killer's Eyes") but in the end I decided that he'd look better if I cast him as an enigma.

This guy reminds me of a mass murderer we had here in 1990, he dressed similar and was all shadowy.
I like the books, but they're not my cup of tea.
This is very well done,, especially the coloring, which has a sinister, yet vibrant feel about it.

Say thankya, sai Ziblink. In my personal opinion, Roland's quest is one of the highlights of literature.
