Something I farted together in like 15 minutes.

Just like there's "there’s character building attractiveness, and there’s pandering fan-service cliche attractiveness" (or so Regular Tom Prestion mentioned**), there's "controversy caused by two people with defensible positions" and there's "controversy caused by someone who doesn't have a clue".

That comic about Nintendo "forcing" their Japanese story elements. That was around the turn of the 90s, and his comic was made in 2010. Talk about being late to the party.

I personally think he just gets into this sort of thing because he wants to look like the good guy. He has a bad habit of taking things out of context two.

Last time I confronted him on the boob poster commic about how insignificant it was and that if he and these people wants to stop objectifying to attack more important big issues.

He commented to one of those who replyed to me. The passive aggressive bastard was telling the other guy that my point was erelevent and how I was wrong, trying to argue my point behind my back without me.

Pity that he cannot choose the 'controversial issues' wisely, either - as of the day before yesterday he assembled a monument of a journal to rise up against the-so-called deviantART-sanctioned art theft that Hot Topic apparently profits from:

tompreston.deviantart.com/jour…

As you said, he picked an issue that would seemingly paint him as a concerned citizen with a valuable solution ready at hand. But dozens of other deviants who weren't as quick to pass out judgement left and right soon discovered that the whole issue has been tremendously misinterpreted - all the while Dobson would rather go out of his wayto try and spread his paranoia to his viewerbase.

I didn't even need to read the whole entry to find that some of his facts were was wrong, the first paragraph was as where I found the first error. I don't think he knows that you actually have to agree to the TOS everytime you upload a picture. How could he be here for 10 years and not know that? The checkbox is like right next to the "submit" button. Almost every bit of "advice" he gave is essentially common sence when it comes to posting online. He seems to think this is all news.

I see all his "fans" are falling into this and blaming dA as the bad guys when in truth TP is simply to lazy to check the TOS himself. Blowing things out of proportion is his specailty though. Even his most recent "job market" comic. Once again he is blaming something else for his trouble when it all comes down to lazyness but in the mean time all his viewers are being discouraged due to fear that that won't get anywhere.

I'll admit; I get a kneejerk reaction on many issues based on what Regular Tom thinks. Like, if he's for something, I generally feel inclined to be against it... and if I end up agreeing with him, it's for reasons totally unrelated to Regular Tom's rationale.

Yeah. I really don't like webcomics doing politics because it has a tendency to get out of hand and exaggerate it. And then I just can't take what they are saying seriously.

10 years of controversy and it's all the stuff that puts him on the moral high ground. I guess his comic on the Aurora shooting or tracing Big Ben wouldn't have made him look too good.

Don't you know? That's all filed under "SYAC". (How convenient.)

But seriously, the only "controversy" Regular Tom covers is stuff that supports the image of him as a lone warrior, a dark knight. Anything that makes Regular Tom look otherwise is not "controversial", but people bullying him for no reason what-so-ever.

"Hey guys, I think climate change is happening!"
So does every other scientifically literate person.

"Hey guys! Christians aren't the only ones who have celebrations during the winter solstice but other religious have them too!"
As known by every Christian and pretty much everyone else with or without a religion.

"Hey guys! I support gay rights! LESBIAN KICK!"
Wow! So controversial! It's too bad that the tables have pretty much turned on this issue and we're in the era where gay rights is being pushed more and more in the first world.

Next big controversy: raping children is wrong.

Strange how his "controversy" list was just a list of boring, unprovocative crap nobody cared about, instead of the instances of lying, plagiarism and sociopathic callousness that actually garnered him widespread negative attention.

Either it was an intentional attempt to massage his horrible reputation, or he really does believe he's a brave iconoclast fighting the establishment (by adopting the safest, most mainstream views of the one internet community he's barricaded himself within and that he defends with a maxed out blocklist).

When the best thing you can say about someone is "Well, he may not be certifiably delusional, he may just be a pathological liar," then it's safe to say they have an image problem.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Marsmar In reply to Mortal-Sword [2014-04-27 23:21:16 +0000 UTC]

Even his things on actual issues were half wrong. He tried weighing in on the Happy Holidays vs Merry Christmas debate and failed because he incorrectly assumed the problem christians have with the whole thing is that other holidays exist in general (and what better holiday to use than Hanukkah, the least problematic for the religious right). The most spot on was probably his global warming comic but even that's hard to take seriously since the characters he used are usually presenting poorly thought out arguments in favor of a video game console.

It really is all just to make him look good because every issue he listed either gives him the moral high ground without needing actual facts (such as his recent feminist crusade) or are ones that more people than not would agree with. If it's to fix his reputation then it won't help because the problem was that people think he's preachy and he's going out and trying to confirm that as if it were a badge of honor.

I think it's hilarious that his reaction to one of his "fans" unwatching him for being a preachy asshole was to write up a huge effortpost about how he's always been a preachy asshole.

You sure showed that guy, Dobson.

It's just too bad that when people say his drawings aren't as good as during his college years he doesn't follow it up with a "My drawings haven't been getting worse, they always sucked!" journal post.

He's been droning on about Samus's high heels in the new smash brothers game lately.
I probably would have never noticed them if it wasn't for him pointing it out.

I find it hilarious one of the points he's trying to drive home about it is that making high heels that help you jump better is unrealistic.

It's like "Oh my god, my videogame where a woman who fights brain sucking organism in a metallic suit that can morph into a tiny ball decides to have a 4 way fight between a stereotypical Italian-American plumber that shoots fireballs out of his hands, a yellow rat that conducts lightning from it's cheeks and pink blob that inhales and swallows people for the purpose of emulating their powers is so unrealistic now that Samus is wearing heels!"

Of all the things that are realistic, video games are not one of them. This is why it's such a non-issue to me; the shoes can be anything, nor even non-existent.

There is so much material, what are your thoughts on female characters being objectified by wearing high heels even though they have worn a skintight suit for a number of years?  Inquiring minds must know

eviltomp In reply to Lecter-the-Mu [2014-05-03 02:12:59 +0000 UTC]

>> what are your thoughts on female characters being objectified by wearing high heels

Samus is a fictional character and thus cannot form her own opinion on her own looks. This is a complete non-issue to me.

But, for the sake of argument, if Samus was a real person... we live in society, and thus we all feel pressure to act, be, live a certain way. However, we also live in a post-Second Wave Feminist society; women (and men) have since acquired the ability make their own decisions about their own identity. As such, those societal pressures aren't anywhere as strong as they were once upon a time... basically to the point that no one has the authority to tell someone else what they SHOULD be doing, let alone make them do it.

To which: if Samus was a real person and wanted to dress that way, that was her choice and her right. If anyone thinks she SHOULDN'T dress that way, regardless of the reasoning, I think that runs afoul of the whole "we have the right to make our own decisions" thing. The same goes if anyone thinks Samus' dress sets a bad example and people need to be shielded from it.

TLR; to rephrase Voltaire: "I disapprove of what you wear, but I will defend to the death your right to wear it"
