Description
A little tutorial on how I handle eyes
It's actually much simpler than it looks, I just laid out each & every step instead of combing them!
This should also mean there is no need to have to read through the processes!
In the end you should have very few layers really!
-Lines (I use the lines from my entire image though)
-Shine (I also use this for things like nose, lips, claws, ect anything shiny!)
-Light
-Shade2
-Shade1
-Pupil 2
-Pupil 1
-Iris
-Eye White
**But why 2 pupils?? Why not just make it the colour you want??**
Well yes, you could if you plan on a specific eye colour!
I do this so I can swap the colour of the iris out at will and tint the pupil very slightly!
There is no 100% right or wrong way to draw anything!
Experiment, learn, grow & have fun with your art!
If my little tutorials help great! I'm glad to help other artist along!

Yay eye shading! The only way I've been able to do good eyes is to purposefully make them inhuman haha

XDDD I've done tons & tons of diff shading methods and looks for eyes over the years. It honestly really depends on the look you're going for
This is like semi-realism/anime?? Kinda thing going on. It can be pushed to very anime or more & more realistic with how you layer things up, but personally I like this middle ground for me, but like hopefully people can see what I'm doing here for these effects and experiment on their own

Yeah I know what you mean! I'm getting more comfortable with non-realism, but my work always looks weaker when I try to imitate the manga style, so I'm trying to find something that is neither I guess? In any case, eyes are so much fun to draw XD

In all honesty I'm not sure if my eye-balls count as anime eyes or not? I mean I guess they could be? But then idk like I watch a lot of animes and most of them have really WEIRD shaping/proportions (note on this later haha). I based mine from just how eyes look in RL/photos/nature but I also simplified it down to basic shapes & concepts for myself as well, the orb, the top eye lid & the tear duct/fleshy triangle. Which I believe is what everyone should do when drawing; draw & simplify it from nature, instead of wholly relying on other people to simplify it, because then you are simplifying their simplification and that just seems odd? IDK maybe it's just me but that never seems to work out well XD
TBH w/e I'm watching anime or reading manga sometimes I look at the eyes and just hate them. Like, I supposed it's supposed to look nice or something, but I cant like it. Even anime I used to really like way back I'm now like urrggg these eyes are terrible what is the deal >
For a recent example, I started watching this random anime because it was suggested as a psychological thriller /it's not it's some random bishoen anime??/

I COULD NOT HANDLE UPSIDE DOWN RAINBOW-POSSIBLY POKEBALL EYES OMG XDDD
And then when all is said & done you have to have eyes that match the rest of the image. Like you can't just slap some random weird anime eyes onto a Disney classic, it just wouldn't flow stylistically. Even if the entire image were redrawn with those in, they just wouldn't fit with the rest of the basic shapes presented. Personally when I'm drawing, I don't try for a style of anything? I just look at photos and sometimes my pets /dog no I need to examine your paw this is important!/ and draw from there. But I've never been able to really well mimic styles either ahha. All the Okeffee things "mimic X artist style" was actually VERY hard for me, because it always felt flat & lifeless :C
