Description
BASILISKLatin: Basiliscus Rex
Race: Demon
Species: Serpentine
Classification: Serpent King Demon
Height: 0.9m (3ft) when lying down/3m (9.8ft) when stood up
Length: 13m (42.6ft)
Weight: 1135kg
Diet: Carnivore
The Basilisk is a serpentine demon which earned the title of "King of Serpents" due to the crown of horns they carry upon their heads, Basilisks also seem to be able to communicate and control none demonic snake species, it is unknown to whether it is due to a chemical that is released or if the Demon can actually control snakes with only its mind, some also theorize it might be due to the rattle at the end of the Demons tail.
Some even speculate it might be due to the Serpent Demons massive size or the fact it has legs, giving it a sense of superiority over other snakes.
Basilisks are some of the most toxic of all demons, being rivaled by cockatrice, the venom produced by Basilisks is much more potent than any other snake in our world, with it being 6 times stronger than a black mambas venom.
Even the basilisks blood is toxic and has been said to creep up the legs of those who step foot in fallen blood, killing them within minutes through an extremely painful experience.
Their is little info on how to cure the effects of the poison, with the only recorded methods being to extract the venom and produce an anti venom, but this would be an extremely dangerous task to achieve.
The tears of a phoenix has also been said to cure the toxins effects, but this has only been rumored in an old book about wizards so this method is most likely just fiction.
The eyes of Basilisks have been told to have the ability to kill any living creature, this has been seen to be false but direct eye contact with this beast has been seen to make creatures freeze with fear.
There have been some brave enough (or more likely crazy enough) to hunt down Basilisks for their eyes, this is due people noticing the absolutely beautiful golden colours of the eyes, this has lead to a single eye to be 200 times more expensive than gold.
According to some collectors, when you look into the eye of a Basilisk, it quivers, almost as if it's still alive.
When the Basilisk was 1st discovered people thought that they were small in size, with the largest of these individuals being measured to be as long as a human arm, these early discoveries were later found to be just the infants of a freshly hatched clutch of eggs, with their mother hidden within a near by cave.
From the few survivors of that discovery came the true size estimate of 42ft in length, although there have been rumors of Basilisks reaching even greater lengths than that.
There are some theories about were the Basilisk came from
. DEMONIFICATION - Due to the extreme resemblance to snakes it has been hypothesized that the Basilisk is infact a species of snake that has been mutated due to exposure to Nether.
. CONVERGENT EVOLUTION - The Basilisk might be very similar to serpents due to having a similar environment, although this still doesn't explain why it has 6 legs
. HYBRIDIZATION - Due to this Demon having the main body shape of a snake and the limbs of a lizard, it has been thought that the Basilisk is actually an artificial Chimera Demon, but if this theory is true... who is willingly creating Demons?
Hope you all like this, it was the first time i have drew a serpent with an actual snake looking head (last snake i drew before this was like 12 or so years ago when i was 7) i'd say i did a pretty good job
although I know my depiction might not be THAT accurate to the original myth
It wasn't giant like it is shown here only about 1.21m long, i just went with a giant to add to it's power over an entire species of reptiles
The pictures i usually see show it with a chicken like head rather than a snake looking one (not sure why)
and for the few of you wandering why it has legs when its a snake, the basilisk is usually depicted with up to 6 legs
My inspiration for this was when i saw the Dalamadur from Monster Hunter and i thought it looks so freaking awesome when it was coiled around a mountain
either way i had a lot of fun with this one and best of luck to you all

i'd be lying if i said he wasn't a big inspiration, infact the original design was even more Dalamadur looking
i tweaked the design into THIS with the frills to make it more unique and less blatantly based off it

considering the size and highly venomous bite, i can only recommend avoiding that

Really cool design! I don't see too many basilisks being drawn! There's a lot of detail in the head where the focal point is, which draws the eye there immediately. All the little folds in the frills are very well done! I really like the added bit of lore for it too. It sounds like you've got a well developed world these creature inhabit!
The biggest thing I see here for improvement is the lack of overall shading, or use of texture. It's hard to differentiate the basilisk from the rock it's wrapped around. They both have the same kinds of lines to break up the space. The belly of the basilisk is clearly scaled, but there's nothing to tell what the rest of the body is covered by. If the it's smooth skin, than the rock can be textured to make it stand out as different. Some basic shading would be good too, something to help show the curvature of the basilisks body wrapping around the stone.
Overall it looks really nice!

thank you so much
i can agree actually, think i have seen only 3 or 4 basilisks here, and 1 i think might have been a cockatrice
thanks a bunch, i was worried about the frills, i was scared they might looks a bit too detailed
thanks again, with the monster pictures i am doing i am trying to make a unique interpretation to the myth while also staying accurate to the descriptions of the creatures in some ways, and with the lore thing i am just having fun with it really, just making an interesting way to get information on these creatures across in a scientific way
yeah i can agree, it is pretty hard to make snake scale look good so i didn't attempt them, i should really try and attempt it more
but i can easily fix that issue with the rock
i think it might be due to the camera that shading isn't coming out right, i did add some shading, although i might need to make it stand out a bit more than this
thanks for the helpful comment, it is extremely helpful

You're welcome!
You could get a practice sketchbook to practice things like scales and such! There are great examples with different types of snake scales, even fish scales look really good one a reptile!
Do you have a lamp you could put your finished work near? Brighter light would help even with a bad camera.

that's a good idea actually, would help a tonne
nothing wrong with practicing the different scale types too
sadly not, i have been having to use the sun as a light
1/2 the time it works well, other 1/2 it doesn't
