Description
King of the serpents and bringer of death, the Basilisk is hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent. It slithers and crawls with its immense bulk and multiple legs, seeking prey to devour. Its eyes are on its prehensile tongue, allowing it to see in many directions when the mouth is opened. Any who meet the gaze of its eyes will suffer an immediate, but painful, death. Its teeth also contain a lethal venom, which can either be injected directly into prey or spit in a long stream. Its blood-red crest remains folded when docile, but during a fight or hunting, the crest is unfolded in all its brilliance. For thousands of years, Basilisks have been bred as guards for wealthy kings and rulers. They lay in dark tombs, protecting the riches and treasure from thieves and robbers. A Basilisk can be trained not to attack certain people, but their gaze is unbiased and many loyal subjects have met their demise when they foolishly open their eyes.

I love the Basilisk. The whole gaze-and-die thing, compounded with it being a snake has it sold for me. Most Basilisk I see are either large, elegant snakes, or some bird/snake hybrid. What got me was some old drawing of a basilisk that had it as some multi-legged, humped back, bird-snake thing. It was ugly, ungraceful, weird and perfect. So I took some ideas from that, along with crown. The whole eye-on-tongue thing was something I just wanted to give the Basilisk, some extra weird thing to go with it.
