Description
When the Starborn purged the surface of the earth, humanity fled deep into the miles of sewers far below. They buried themselves under layers and layers of pipes, tunnels and caverns, trying to survive the firestorm that consumed the surface. The Starborn could not pursue the humans down into the tunnels below, so instead they created a weapon to finish the job. Birthed from their horrid arsenal, the Bdellis originally started out as a soup of microorganisms. This living fluid was flushed into the sewers, where it soon began to adapt and grow. It copied forms of creatures down below, assimilated inorganic parts into their bodies and even mutated some of the wildlife that took up residence in the sewers. Soon the Bdellis grew into multi-cellular creatures, all of which lived to prey on humans. As the crowds of humans ran into the buried tunnels, the Bdellis chased after them, tearing through their numbers and slaughtering hundreds. It was only until the humans made it to the lowest of levels when the Bdellis ceased their pursuit, waiting for their bodies to adapt. This gave humans time to rebuild and regroup, and they soon began to build a new society down below. The Bdellis soon could survive at any depth or environment, but humanity had already gained a foothold. Now the two races strike a shaky balance, where humans live in defended towns and where Bdellis wait in the wilds, ready to pounce on any human foolish to travel alone. Despite this stalemate, Bdellis are still extremely dangerous and capable of taking down a well armored human. Their many forms allow them to make an army of different creatures and attacks. The furthest down below are the weakest, as they are so far from their primordial source and have been locked into their forms so long. The higher one goes up, though, the more dangerous the Bdellis become. Though one could easily defeat a few Bdellis in the depths, traveling upwards can lead to a horrible death.Forms of Bdellis found below:
1. Drone - The most common form of the Bdellis, these forms act as simple soldiers. They pace back and forth, waiting for prey to get close. Those who wander too close will be attacked by their claws and thorny mouth flaps.
2. Sentry - A stationary adversary, these forms both attack and block progress. Their snake-like upper-body lunges at nearby prey, and later versions of them can spit globs of stomach acid from afar. Their fat bodies block the way, requiring foes to dispatch them before moving on.
3. Grind Leech - A form that relies on speed and ambush, Grind Leeches attempt to swallow prey so that it can be pulverized by their inner jaws. Some Grind Leeches may hang from the ceiling with their single claw and drop onto those below. Some may wait in the rivers of sewage and pop out at passing prey. Once on the ground and their cover is blown, they will coil and launch themselves at prey, trying to latch on with their razor jaws.
4. Cutter Bear - A form that has assimilated metals into its body, Cutter Bears have spinning blades running through their mouths. They charge at prey with jaws stretched wide. Prey is pulverized and sprayed out of their back pipes. The shredding jaws can also break through certain substances, so a smart foe can trick them into clearing paths or opening ways with a missed charge.
5. Moth Mouth - These forms are capable of flying, but usually hang from the ceiling like a bat. They wait for prey to close in and they then swoop down to envelop them in their wings. The flaps are locked around prey and digestive juices are used to break them down. Those who are trapped within their wings should fight back to avoid such a fate. Or at least struggle so other foes don't get an extra hit in.
6. Bio Blocker - Bio Blockers do not actually attack humans, but rather impedes their progress by building sturdy towers out of waste and processed sewage. These special towers are impervious to damage and cannot be easily destroyed. Those who wish to pass must make their way to the top and attack the exposed head. Once the head is destroyed, the rest will crumble apart.
7. Obake - A jittery Bdellis, these forms stand stationary on the ground until startled by approaching foes. When an attacker draws near, or crosses above them, they rocket into the air and open their arms to float back down. Their thorny heads damage those who are above them, and their clawed feet can harm those who are below when they float down. Some will simply travel up and down, while others may drift as they float, proving annoying to those trying to navigate or fight around them.
8. Smoker Slug - Smoker Slugs are not aggressive, but they are quite annoying. The smoke that constantly pours from their bodies and pipes can mask entire areas, cloaking other Bdellis waiting for blinded prey. Some stay in one place, while others crawl around to spread their fumes. Foes should dispatch these slugs in order to clear the air and see what hides within. But in some cases, they cannot be easily reached.
9. Vile Trap - Clinging to walls, ceilings and floors, this form lunges out at those who pass by. Their large jaws are perfect for latching onto prey as they reel them in. Struggling can help escape from their mouths, but one should be wary where they will drop if they are freed.
10. Worm Heads - An enemy made up of hundreds of ravenous worms, Worm Heads are terrors to fuel supplies. The worm clumps they fling can stick to any surface and damage those who touch them. These projectiles and sticky clumps can be destroyed with flame, which is also needed to defeat the main body. Worm Heads constantly regenerate their health, requiring foes to douse them in a constant burning flame in order to fully destroy them.
11. Cerebillis - These floating forms have somehow gained control over fiery forms of energy. They drift through the air, launching burning projectiles at enemies in the area. When foes are to the side, they lob these fire balls. But when prey stands below them, they will charge up a blast to vaporize those below. Foes should be wary where they stand.
12. Trap Jaws - Trap Jaws are extremely lethal forms that live within holes in the floor. Those who fall into their gullet will be killed instantly in the bed of razor teeth. Unfortunately they are well hidden and armored, making them impervious to damage. Some Trap Jaws have prehensile tongues that extend out of the pit. These tongues stay perfectly upright, waiting for prey to run into it. Once contact is made, it seizes the victim and sucks them into the shredding maw. Thankfully the tongues can be forced to retreat through an attack. These tongues are also not picky on who they capture. If one can fool a foe into touching the tongue, then they will be the ones who perish within the jaws.
13. Pot Belly - Pot Bellies are forms that sit upon burning furnaces. They wander around much like Drones, but they have an extra trick up their sleeves. They can lash out with a tongue of flame and burn those it hits. Their metal stomach is impervious to damage, so attackers must aim for the head above.
14 - Brawlers - A beefed up Drone, Brawlers rely more on strength to defeat enemies. Their thick arms can lift hunks of scrap metal and fling it at faraway foes. When enemies close in, they can lash out with a strong, but slow, punch. This punch can send foes flying, and often into nasty traps or pits. They are slow, but one should be careful not to get hit.
15. Cloud Slime - Cloud Slimes float in the air in constant patrol. Their heads lob out globs of corrosive spit onto those below. These arcing shots are slow, but can be troublesome to busy fighters below. Their armored shells cannot be damaged, only their heads can. But be careful when slaying them, as the metal shell will plummet upon death. One should be careful not to be below when one falls, in fact, it is best to have another Bdellis below to take the hit.
16. Clampterns - A passive Bdellis that sticks to surfaces for their whole life. These forms use a light producing organ to light up areas with their transparent stomachs. These forms are useful in dark areas, and should not be destroyed. However, these same organs can easily explode when damaged, and can be used to take out surrounding enemies.
17 - Wraiths - A floating form of Bdellis, these ghost-like creatures home in on enemies the second they sense their presence. Though they lack any vicious attacks, their constant pursuit will be quite bothersome to those who are trying to fight other enemies.
These are only a handful of Bdellis that wait in the deep. There are tales of forms that have grown intelligent and much more capable than the others. These forms are extremely rare, but incredibly tough to defeat.

They retain most of it early after the assimilation and for a good chunk of time after. Once assimilated, they become hostile towards humanity and follow the programming of the Bdellis. Their previous knowledge and memory remains after assimilation, but as time wears on, their memory begins to fade. Most things lost are personal memories and thoughts of their past lives, as the primordial fluid doesn't see a point in maintaining those. Most focus goes towards knowledge of human settlements and tactics. If these assimilated hybrids are attacked and put through a long bloody battle, their human side will degrade as they devolve into a more bestial state. The stress of injury and fighting causes the fluid-converted mind to focus more on survival than thought and humanity.

They cannot, the ooze comes solely from whatever sources supply it from up above.

That's kind of inconvenient for the bdellis : P

It does make it a bit difficult for them to get super deep within the system, but it serves as an almost impenetrable barrier for any humans trying to reach the surface. There are also some types of Bdellis that can lay eggs and create clone copies of themselves, so that helps some.

Could they move some of the ooze to the deeper areas?

They could, but since the replenishing source of the ooze is found upwards, the moved pools would eventually be used up as Bdellis are created.

What if a bdellis drinks some of the ooze?

It could heal injuries that they have and possibly cause some slight mutations to their form. Some simple adaptations to help them continue hunting and fighting. If the Bdellis is heavily injured and dying, consuming the fluid would cause the ooze to break them down and turn them back to sludge.

Do bdellis have a hivemind? (Hopefully yes : P) (Note: I still consider it a hivemind if they have individuality but can telepathically communicate over any distance)

Yes, in varying degrees. The fluid that births them is pretty much the core of their hive mind. The more primitive and bestial Bdellis that are born from it are linked to the ooze as well as each other at all times. For certain Bdellis that become more advanced and gain their own individuality, the link to the hive mind weakens a bit. When all isolated from the fluid and all other Bdellis, their mind is alone, but they can link up with others in order to reconnect and exchange information. This is partial separation from the hive mind is meant to make the advanced Bdellis more unique and allow them to discover new ways to adapt and survive. This information they collect and learn during this experience can be fed back to the mind, where it can devise new strategies and tactics to conquer the sewer world.

What if you injected yourself with some of the bdellis ooze?

As a human, you would pretty much be assimilated by it. The Bdellis ooze is meant to absorb, adapt and mutate to create monstrosities that are bent on hunting and killing humanity. What would come out is a humanoid Bdellis creature, but most of the humanity would be destroyed in the process.
