In such a time of caution and dread, one's mind certainly loves to give into paranoia. "What is lurking in that dark alley?" it asks or maybe wondering "Is that stranger following you?" An endless source of unnerving questions and terrifying possibilities, but never would one think that the worst one would be "Was that building always there?" At first it seemed like such a dumb question. Of course it has always been there, it is a freaking skyscraper. Something of that size doesn't get built in secret, you just never pay attention to your surroundings. Walk the same street over and over for a couple of years, and everything just blends together. One shiny tower looks like all the rest of them, so you would never think twice about them, especially since you had no business inside of them. There are dozens of other explanations on why such a structure seems unfamiliar, and all of them are more plausible than it appearing out of nowhere. Yet, such a conclusion seems to strengthen this paranoia, rather than weaken it. It is so easy to write it off and blame a shoddy memory or a busy mind. Any who saw it would think the same exact thing "it must have always been there, skyscrapers don't just pop up overnight." Something so ludicrous that people refuse to even humor the idea. It is insanity, yet it seems to make sense.

There were a few that wondered the same thing, but such questioning was written off as lunacy or just another conspiracy theory. Who would believe such a thing? But there were indeed things that were off about the whole thing. A towering skyscraper that no one ever seemed to walk in or out from. A whole building that had no extra entrances, parking structure or even an address. Hundreds of windows that all lit up in an unnaturally fluid way whenever night fell. Gleaming pristine glass and steel despite no cleaners or window washers ever being seen near it. It was bizarre and a bit obvious, yet no one else seemed to see it. People walked by without a glance or word, hardly giving it a second thought. Even with the more blatant clues, they were blind to it. You could shout at them and force their eyes upon the massive tower and they would still write it off as a normal building. Even so, they all walk past it with a brisk pace. Their heads always look downward or anywhere else, never at that strange place. No panhandlers or loiterers ever go near it, and none even get close to its doors. Despite everyone's claims that it is just a normal part of the city, no one wants anything to do with the bizarre tower. The only people who say anything about it are those that can somehow see it.

No one is sure why a few folk can see these strange oddities while everyone else remains blind. Be it a medical condition, a state of mind or just pure chance, there are those that take notice to this thing. While it seems like a good thing, it really is not. You can't tell anyone and no one believes you. No one will do anything besides nod their head and politely send you on your way. "It has always been there," they say every time. It is a phrase you will hear constantly, without fail. It has always been there, skyscrapers just don't pop up overnight. No matter what you tell them, that is what they will reply with every time, even when it somehow isn't there. There is something worse than staring at that accursed building and feeling powerless to do anything about, and that is when you find that it is suddenly gone. All that remains is a barren dirt lot, and nothing more. A flat piece of earth that is somehow right in the middle of the city, and yet you already know what they will say. "It has always been there" and they go about their business. A few days later, it will return, and no one will bat an eye. None of the others see it come or go, it just simply vanishes every few days and returns a while later. No one is sure how or why, but it hardly even matters anymore. Things are going wrong, the city is changing and yet it all remains calm. One day you will run into the street as the monoliths of steel and glass rend the land of concrete and asphalt in twain and some business man will tell you "oh, it has always been like that."
