Description
EDIT 1/16/14: Almost FIVE YEARS since I've uploaded this.. I've finally hit 1k faves! Hope it's been helpful!
Just a note, I've noticed some pictures of those who have done the tutorial and I'm seeing a pattern in accidentally having the fur go the wrong way on the ears. Make sure you get the fur fibers running toward the *pointed end* of the ear.. not toward the base. The pointy end of your ear should be seam ripped thus giving it a nice fluffy look at the ends!

Do you remember what kind of fauz fur you got? I'm looking around for my upcoming Ritsuka cosplay, and I can find a kind that I'd like to buy in a brown, but I'm not finding any black...

There were two rolls of black faux fur that Joanns carried. The first I bought had too much of a blue tint in the light and didn't match my wig.. the second had more of the gray-silver shine to it, which is what I eventually went with.

It was very helpful, and this can be done with any other color fur, but which would look best for a furry costume?

Hrm.. furry in what manner? Typically, a fursuit is full-body.. so it'd match the rest of the body fur.

I mean just the ears and tail for nao, the fursuit is to complicated for me at this moment in time.

Ah, well technically speaking, ears and tail does not a furry make! Ears and tail while still the rest being human is called kemonomimi. There's a bit of a stigma against "furries" proper, being all animal.. but some are okay with just ears and tail.
ANYWAYS, I guess it really just depends on what color you want them to be! Know first that you can't use hair dyes on fake fur, so that needs to be taken into consideration. You can use markers and rubbing alcohol.. but will take a long long time to do.. especially if you want to dye fur for a tail. Most craft stores only carry white, black, and brown fur.

I love this tutorial~ Thanks so much for making it!
But I have one question, about how long, from the fold to the point should the ear be? I tried making a pair, and they turned out a little too large for my tastes.

Test out different lengths and shapes with paper and hold it up to your head! Everyone's head is obviously different, so a different length may be appropriate -nod- I have a fairly large head, so I made bigger ears!

How would you attach them to a headband??
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
exailious In reply to Ritzy-kun [2010-01-28 03:39:32 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure a headband would work, to be honest. I made these to avoid the headband look that so many other cat-ear cosplayers have. Since the ears are curved and not flat, they need something that keeps the sides flat against your head. Hair combs of some sort would be a better option -nod-

Punkitsch In reply to ??? [2009-10-16 23:20:52 +0000 UTC]
does it HAVE to be a seam rippper? D:
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
exailious In reply to Punkitsch [2009-10-17 22:31:09 +0000 UTC]
Seam rippers are like two bucks and the best thing I can think of..
The main thing is to not cut the fur fibers when making that edge. The ear will not look natural if all the hairs are clipped on the end. The seam ripper lets you tear the fur fabric without clipping the ends of the hair -nodnod-

Do you have any advise on how to pin the ears to one's hair?
I made a pair, but I couldn't find a good way to pin them into my hair.

I have three sets of bobby pins on each ear I made. One on top, and one on each side of the ear. I use a wig, so it attaches nicely. If you have thick enough hair, I'd imagine bobby pins would work as well.

SukiKurokaji In reply to exailious [2009-10-05 23:47:06 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I had bobby pins as well, although I didn't have a wig, and they just didn't seem to want to stay in my hair, even with my sister helping me. XD;

SukiKurokaji In reply to exailious [2009-10-06 01:58:22 +0000 UTC]
Perhaps, may try that. The ones I made I sewed(then pinned, because my stiching failed. |D )to a headband, which worked somewhat, excepit it was kinda thick and a bit bent out of shape.

I imagine if you attach something like these: [link]
into the ears you'll be fine
