Description
For who caught the 10 000th pageview and requested that I draw Thomas the Tank Engine for a little kid. That's fucking adorable. That show creeped the shit out of me when I was a kid, and drawing this was like re-living a myriad of horrors.

Was this based on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon?

Nope! It was just sort of pulled off the top of my head, after looking at a few references on google images.

It's something in the facial expressions that seems to really hit "uncanny valley" with a lot of people, I think.

If this were on a birthday card or balloon, I'd buy it for my son. This is actually a really good take on Thomas. I never watched it as a kid, but my boy loves it right there with Sesame Street and Curious George.
I can understand where those faces would kinda creep you out as a kid. After watching a few episodes, I upset my wife by comparing the older episodes especially to communist Russia. I say this because all the engines strive to be "really useful" and are all happy about working and that Sir Topham Hatt would threaten the bad engines by sending them to the scrapyard. So, these bio-mechanical beings were being threatened with death if they didn't perform their work to Hatt's liking? Sounds pretty dismal!

Hahaha! Thank you! I'm still kinda' hoping my son doesn't like it... so I can steer clear of it. It still gives me the creeps, even today.

I didn't want my kid to like Elmo, but he loves him. I like Elmo because done by the same guy who did Master Splinter from the old Ninja Turtles movies. I've also learned I can do Elmo's voice when I read to my son.
My wife and I have different hatreds of children's entertainment. She loathes Barney and thinks he's creepy. I don't care. I hate Veggie Tales because they're little CGI bible thumpers, but she's only seen the cartoons that are more secular in nature. Either way, we don't have stuff from those properties in our home. I kinda rolled my eyes about Thomas at first just because I think trains are boring. Growing up in a town with a major train intersection smack dab in the middle has a tendency to make you lose some love for those machines.

Some things just can't be controlled, and kids will like what they like. I feel children's shows have really degraded over recent years, and adult cartoons aren't really any better, but I think a lot of kids gravitate towards them in an effort to find the edge that the cartoons geared towards their age are lacking these days. I don't have TV anymore because the vast majority of shows just aren't very funny, and watching cartoons on TV used to be one of my favourite pastimes! It's a real shame. I'm still kind of hoping that the over-softening of children's entertainment is a phase that will pass during my son's childhood years. But then, my parents raised me to question everything put in front of me, so I never took that edgy humor as seriously as perhaps kids do nowadays. I think a lot of parents of the more recent generations have mistaken over-sheltering for safety and discipline, and as a result many kids are less prepared for life outside of the filtered safety of their family home. Many of the ones who aren't over-sheltered seem to be very over exposed, and act out behaviour that's really inappropriate for their age group. The media reflects that necessarily, to preserve itself, and both cartoons and children seem to have suffered this massive divide. That's my personal commentary on it though, and I'm still pretty young myself so my views could be skewed by that.
I always thought train shows were boring too, but I watched Mighty Machines and loved it. I grew up in an area that's full of both trains and construction, so why one was boring and the other was so fascinating I'm not really sure. :S

I'm a big fan of the Thomas & Friends show, but I'm not oblivious that the faces can be found to be somewhat creepy. Especially on some of the newer characters now... ugh Ferdinand..
But the drawing's cute too, and so I"m gonna fave it. You're welcome.

Thanks. This show always scared me as a kid, but it was popular with all my younger brothers. I don't know how old the show is, but considering how many people still enjoy it, it's remarkably successful.

I guess I could get the scary aspect.. trains with faces that didn't move, just the eyes. And none of the people moving, all with wedge-shaped hands and blank stares... O_o
Of course, now that's changed thanks to CGI.. yep.
Coming up on 16 Seasons, with one feature length movie, 5 specials, and a second feature length movie to be released in 2014.. successful is the word.

Yeah. Supposedly it's meant to take place in WWII with a Diesel vs Steam Engine confrontation, which to me doesn't really seem plausible because around the time the war took place, only engines 1-5 were present on Sodor.
It's to be directed by Shane Acker, the same guy who directed Tim Burton's '9' movie.

I'm not really sure how I feel about that. I grew up with TtTE and I'm a little unhappy with the CGI seasons. However, I might give it a chance. Luckily, my niece loves Thomas, so when the movie comes out I'll take her to see it.

Nah, it's been running strong, now in full CGI.. I think I already said the CG thing.. hmm.
The next hour long 'special' is due out in a few months.. it looks exciting. There are reruns played on the Nickolodeon channel from the classic seasons (1-11) sometimes, but it's mostly new stuff.
