Description
Headcanon: spell card rules existed in pc-98 era, ZUN simply haven't given them proper names and rules yet. If spell card rules doesn't exist in pc-98 era, then some form of pre-spell card rules existed. They might not be called spell cards, but their function is essentially identical. This is because ZUN himself stated that if the characters really want to kill each other, they wouldn't even need half of the bullets on the screen *citation needed*. Plus, when characters fight each other, they use bullet patterns, the background changes, attack pattern changes based on damage dealt, nobody dies, and the loser gets some clothing damage and tears, all characteristics of modern spell card duels.First time I *properly* used Shinki in walfas. About time, she is one of my most favorite characters. Well, when it comes to pc-98 era, not a lot of super cool characters to choose from. Anyways, speaking of misconceptions, might as well address a big one. Shinki never destroyed Makai. When the protagonist defeated Shinki, she promised them to do whatever she can to sastify the protagonist's demand (stopping the tourist agency from sending so many demons to the eastern country* in case of Reimu, whatever the fuck the others wanted I'm not sure). Nowhere in the game it is mentioned that she destroyed Makai. I cannot find any sources to back up the popular claim that Shinki destroyed Makai or Makai was devastated or whatever. If you can find canon sources (not fanon), please inform me because I would really appreciate it.
*In pc-98, Gensokyo doesn't have a proper name.

If you can find canon sources (not fanon), please inform me because I would really appreciate it.It's not so much that it's stated, more that it's inferred. When Shinki uses her Devil's Recitation, the background starts turning to a deep shade of crimson, then changes to a city landscape devastated by an inferno once it's finished. It's not hard to see how players may have interpreted the changes in background as such.
Further, whether or not you believe Makai was destroyed by Shinki's attack or not, it's quite clear that the player(s) were attacking innocent civilians and destroying property. Dialogues with Louise, Alice, Yumeko, and Shinki all make it clear that you have caused widespread damage through-out Makai, possibly having taken some lives in the process (Yuki and Mai). If that's not evidence for the theory, I don't know what is.

>nobody dies
I feel like I am obligated to point out that both Sara and Orange are outright murdered.
And that even in the windows era, Remilia points out that Reimu is a murderer and Reimu's response is "It was only once. It's not like I'm a serial killer," so...
=====
That aside, valid submission. o uo b

They're just joking you know,ZUN stated that sometimes the characters are like to say a strange joke like that.
or maybe ZUN really want to make Touhou to become More Serious...idk.

Reimu said time to "seal" Orange, and Yuuka did not "kill Sara instantly". I treat them more like banter than anything else. After all, despite Reimu's "not a serial killer" and Yuyuko "eating Mystia", both Sakuya and Mystia lived to appear in another game.

There's also the case where Mima possibly had killed Yuki and Mai. ZUN actually got a letter from a fan over that little detail.
> • Are Yuki and Mai really dead?
> I know we're dealing with a PC-98 game, but were Yuki and Mai from Mystic Square really killed?
> Looking in particular in the conversation when Lady Mima and Yuki are left... (sweat)
> Or is this also a type of joke, like Lady Remilia's statement that "Sakuya is dead" in EoSD?
Basically, they're whatever-works types, so they might not be dead. I generally have no comment regarding the PC-98 games. Please ignore them just as one can ignore derivative works.
Then again, Sakuya is human, but those two aren't. Even if their physical damage is rather painful, they can recover completely in a few days, or in 2–3 weeks if it's really serious. Conversely, it's possible they could not recover so simply or might even truly die from a spiritual attack (one that has a spiritual meaning).
So in short, it's possible that Yuki and/or Mai died. ZUN just hadn't come up with a definitive answer.

He's trying really hard for us to come up with our own answers, isn't he?
