Description Looking at revising the Bex a bit! I'm trying really hard to get back into my spec-evo art. Hopefully this will be the first of many more updates for the Bex world.

Thank you! Yes I am starting to work on that project now. But first I must make a map so I know where all the ethnic groups live Β

I've been thinking about this for a bit,but what are the evolutionary advantages to the "hinged jaw lips" i see in some creatures like this and Halo's Sangheili?

Do you mean the little arm like limbs that wrap around the jaw?

Well in the original design they had two sets of mandibles and they were both used for eating. Truth be told I am still not totally settled on the current design, so it may change in the future to remain more insectoid like the original designs I did. The way I always imagined it was sort of a display thing, a trait that developed by sexual selection. Perhaps their evolutionary ancestors had a similar jaw structure where these limbs were much more function for grasping food and less display oriented. As they evolved I could see them being used in communication, grooming, and gestures of physical affection (or maybe the Bex version of flipping the bird?). These jowls vary depending on the race of Bex, some have short hair, other have long "muttonchops" etc.Β I have not illustrated all the races yet, but that's next on my list.

I'm experimenting with giving them beak-like mandibles. Something a little more substantial than the sort of gaping hole they had going on before. So far I'm liking how it looks and I think the structure makes more sense for eating efficiently.
