Description

By the time the Vasha Irdin returned to the solar system, humanity had spent almost a century preparing for it.

Mars was once home to an indigenous alien race, the Me-et. The now-extinct race had deliberately left behind certain technology and even messages for the people of Earth to discover: warnings of invaders and instructions on how to use the Martians' legacy.  The Me-et had fought the Vasha Irdin before and managed to drive them out of the solar system before suffering abrupt and total extinction; it was assumed that the Vasha Irdin employed biological weapons out of spite as they retreated. While much of the Martian's civilization was lost forever, enough remained to propel mankind forward by hundreds of years, chiefly through  advanced power sources and medical technology. More controversial was the ability to engineer living weapons - disposable creatures designed to kill.

Moreover, the wreckage of several Dominators were recovered from battle sites on Mars. From these remains, mankind created the Titans. Not everything could be reproduced, but the portions of Me-et technology humanity had managed to understand allowed them to fill in the gaps. From what mankind deciphered from alien records, the invader's giant robots were the Me-et's biggest concern, and humanity now had a counter for them.

The Titans became one of the core components of the Japan-American alliance, two nations that had discovered the majority of the Me-et legacy. Their technological supremacy allowed them, for better or for worse, to take over and unite every nation on Earth and virtually every extraterrestrial colony, becoming known as the Solar Alliance. While other weapons and vehicles were not abandoned, the bulk of military resources were spent on creating the Titans, a separate military branch, but a powerful and seasoned one by the time of the aliens' second arrival.

So when Princess Tilavestat approached a colony on Mars and informed them by way of translator that they were going to become part of the Continuum, humanity met her occupying force of 50 Dominators with three times as many Titans, and asked the translator if their race had a word that meant "a dimwitted arrogant alien princess who was about to get her and her entire entourage killed."
