Jiemba woke up to the feeling of water dripping over her face. She realized she was still on the sidelines of the track, under the shade of a tree. Cuyen stood above her with a wet rag in her hands, the source of the dripping. She waved shyly.

“Taking a nap?” Cuyen asked. “Sorry, you looked like you needed to be cooled off.”

Jiemba slowly sat up. Her lung still felt raw. “No no, I did. Thank you.”

The girl smiled. “They are gathering everyone together for the obstacle course, telling everyone to break up into pairs…”

Jiemba laughed, “Is that right? At this rate, we’ll kill ourselves before the war even starts!”

Cuyen giggled. “Jiemba…do you want to be my partner?”

Jiemba was taken aback a little by this. “Um…you know I’m just a bunch of dead weight, right? You’d probably do better with someone more, uh, athletic.”

The young girl smiled again. “It is not a race. We can go at our own pace.”

Jiemba agreed reluctantly. They met everyone at the start of the obstacle course, where Lan and Catori were handing out rope to tie arms of partners together. The first obstacle was a seven or eight foot tall wall of wood. Apparently one had to jump as high as they could, grab the top, and pull themselves up. After a couple of tries, they both managed to grab the top together. But Jiemba simply couldn’t hang there long enough, and slipped. Cuyen grabbed her hand, but it was too much weight to hold. They both came tumbling down in the mud.
