Description
What are these strange creatures?... they are most definitely not ponies.I know the whole "Day and Night" shtick has been done innumerable times between our two royal fair maidens (heh), but to see one that includes Twilight in the mix is a rare sight for me. It's even more rare that I see one with humanized artwork so I figured I'd have a crack at it.
I say it's a fascinating thought, imagining how these ponies would look and act had they instead been humans. Though I can't say I regularly have such thoughts... so yes, it is fascinating.

I've always thought of Luna being very pale, due to being the princess of the night and stuff. Celestia would have a really good tan I guess? Twilight, in my humanized headcanon, is Asian.

This is one of my favorite pictures from the fandom, and is currently the wallpaper on my phone. That being said, your crescent moon is backwards; the light part is always towards the sun.

I always thought of Celestia being a bit darker myself. Though me I would make twilight pale mostly for the reason that she was a bit of a recluse (it looked like it to me at the beginning of the show) just cause the fur is white doesn't mean that it has to be white underneath. And your logic about Luna makes sense for her skin as well :3

I've often seen humanised versions of Luna and Twilight as black. but the is the first black Celestia I have seen. Surprisingly I like it more than the other two.

I've always loved the darker skinned Celestia / lighter skinned Luna pair, they just seem to make more sense to me that way. Your Celestia is particularly beautiful here - and twilight, hanging between the Night and the Morning, interstitial ... I'm not up to making more focused comments on the art, all I can say is ... damn beautiful.

Does anyone else see a face? Look at Twilight's right arm (Her right), you'll see a slightly highlighted spot shaped like an eye. Then look at the curved clouds that reflect the sunlight, it resembles a smile. Next to the sun is where Luna's space ends which outlines the cheek and jaw. See it?

never was able to understand this concept but everyone has their own vision and interpretation. Love the "clear" colors for "night"-piece. Should have been released separately.

Never was able to understand that concept but hey, to each their own. I kept them all together because having them all together was kind of the whole point of the piece.

Some recent events reminded me about this little conversation of ours and I'd like to clarify what I meant. I guess we both know each other well enough to understand it has nothing to do with racism, right, haha? I'm one of the last person on Earth that ares about ethnic/racial differences.
See, the main point is that when you do your humanizations (there is accent here), you follow your own artistic interpretation of the character -- which being shaped by your own experience and knowledge -- and this interpretation, vision of yours is way too rationale, reasonable. Grounded. I'm not a telepath and I won't pretend I know what are you thinking about but I assume that your associative sequence/array follows the idea/concept that the Princess is a mere human and thus you are playing usual human traits in her portrayal. People with dark, tanned skin color usually being called as "People of the Sun", because they are literally spent most of their time under the sun rays, sunlight and thus we know why their skin dark (to absorb the energy). Princess Celestia represents the sun and, as I mentioned already, you play this resemblance, symbolism in a bit grounded, reasonable way - you portray her as a person with black skin color which supposed to give the viewer the right idea/association.
And here is the difference between us and the reason why I'm not really fond of such interpretation - it is way too far way from the show's concept, its idea. You see, MLP:FiM is a fantasy, and when I say "fantasy" I don't simply mean the genre (as many casual people use this word), but rather the concept of a fantasy, of a fairy tale itself. It is not always sane and reasonable, it is quite often based on some symbolism and even simple thing may have some sacral meaning. Princess Celestia controls the sun, she represent the sun itself, and her whole design and color scheme, the character itself resembles such connection: white coat, "aurora borealis" mane (guess, I don't need to tell you how this beautiful thing being formed from "solar wind" and often can be seen during very early morning), golden outfit, pure, innocent, motherish, caring and wise personality, deep and calming voice. See, the symbolism and associative order being played in a bit different way (that's why Luna has dark color scheme and corresponding design), in a fantasy way, which quite appeals to me. It has no boundaries, it gives the artist/author pure creativity freedom, the way to create his own rules, follow his own genuine vision. This is one of the reason why original concept from Lauren appeals to me so much (so01ep01-02) and the reason why I see the Sun Princess mostly like a deity, an elemental (you know what "elemental" is, right?) that as much pure and light as the sun, part of the its power, representing it in every possible way. For me she is more like an angelic figure, the ascended one.
Sorry for the grammar and typos and broken englesh in general, I have terrible migraines and headache at the moment, but I had to write this down before I forgot.

We're both rational people here, I knew you weren't being racist.
I appreciate your concern, and I think I understand now what you're coming from. That being said, allow me to clarify a few of my own viewpoints.
You state that my humanized version of Celestia seems "too rationale and reasonable" and contradicts with the fantasy element of the show. Now, could the same not be said of ALL humanized fanart? The show is a "fantasy" because it's based on sentient, brightly colored, equine characters living in a world inhabited by mythological creatures. Most of what happens in the show obviously does not directly relate to real life, and we know that as we let ourselves become lost in the illusion. As soon as you make them out to be "mere humans," shouldn't that break all ties to the "fantasy" element? They've been made to look like one of the most recognizable things in our lives, how do you get more "grounded" than that? I thought the reason we made them out to be humans in the first place was because we wanted to break them away from that obvious fantasy element in order to bring them over to our basic level of association. So you see, I simply don't see the logic behind your idea of a "black" human Celestia breaking the fantasy illusion any more than a "white" human Celestia would.
You portray her as a person with black skin color which is supposed to give the viewer the right idea/association.
Yes. That is exactly what I did. If I want to humanize something, I want to breathe its personality, background, and behavior into that of a human spirit. When I remove Celestia's exterior appearance and break her down to her core characteristics, I basically get: A wise and caring figure of divine influence who has walked the Earth beneath the sun for thousands of years, raising and lowering it at her will. I want to represent these same qualities in human Celestia, but since appearances can't be defined by divinty, kindness or intelligence, what can I do to help translate these qualities? What if I were drawing it for a viewer who has never seen the show, how can I represent her as a human yet still have the viewer be able see and understand who the character is, what they do, and how they act? What if the viewer was brought up from a culture where they do not view the color white as symbolic of purity, innocence, or "angelic" divinity as you yourself said you do? In a lot of cultures the color white is associated with death and mourning, which couldn't be farther from what I'm trying to present. What I want is a universal visual aid that can get the message across because, after all, is it not in my best interest as an artist to represent the message in a way everyone can understand?
I think the real main difference here is that your viewpoint could be a product of your own cultural upbringing, while mine just seeks to be more universal. We both have reasonable explanations for seeing Celestia as we do, and I think it's good to discuss these things so that we can both learn and appreciate the differences behind our lines of reasoning.

This really caught my eye. It's wonderfully executed, for a start, and I do fully agree with Celestia having darker skin; you're right, it does only make sense.
But my favourite part is that, since the theme of astronomy runs through so much of the show, I'd totally missed the concept that there's Celestia on one side, Luna on the other, and in between Twilight. It makes perfect sense, and more sense the more I think about it. I'm almost willing to bet Ms. Faust chose those names specifically for this. Once the whole thing is pointed out, it's so obvious, but it's never seemed to occur to anyone else. That's how you know this piece is brilliant; sometimes it takes a genius to think of the obvious.

I'm no artist but I can say that this sir or madam is absolutely fantastic. For starters, I can see each of these being an individual picture and standing on their own gloriously, but no. YOU went a step further and included not two, but THREE individually awesome pieces and blended them into an absolute masterpiece. In other words...
GLORIOUS.

I very much like the looks you gave all three of them. And yes, Twilight's the perfect thematic go-between for the sisters. Sometimes, I wonder if Celestia deliberately cultivated her student's interest in the night sky to give her greater ability to connect with Luna...
