=====

"Synesthesia [...] is a neurologically based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

According to Richard Cytowic, Sound to Color synesthesia is "something like fireworks": voice, music, and assorted environmental sounds such as clattering dishes or dog barks trigger color and firework shapes that arise, move around, and then fade when the sound ends. For some, the stimulus type is limited (e.g., music only, or even just a specific musical key); for others, a wide variety of sounds triggers synesthesia.

Sound often changes the perceived hue, brightness, scintillation, and directional movement. Some individuals see music on a "screen" in front of their face. [...] Individuals rarely agree on what color a given sound is (composers Liszt and Rimsky-Korsakov famously disagreed on the colors of music keys); however, synesthetes show the same trends as non-synesthetes do. For example, both groups say that loud tones are brighter than soft tones, and that lower tones are darker than higher tones."

=====

I discovered recently this year that I have Sound to Color synesthesia, but it's very minor I found out when I was at a concert/night club and "felt" that the colors of the light show weren't matching to the music. When listening to music in the car or with headphones on, I can "see" colors flashing/moving in the back of my head like a built-in visualizer and sometimes "taste" sounds, but it doesn't impair me from whatever I'm doing at the moment. It's really difficult to explain, so here's a drawing

So I know this is like years later, but I have to thank you because this deviation is the reason I figured out I had synesthesia. I guess since it just feels so normal to me, and my mom has it too, so sometimes we would argue about the color of certain days. (she thinks monday is bright red, I think it's sky blue)

I have Sound Colour, Colour Taste, Grapheme-Colour, Number Form, and I also think of inanimate objects as having feelings.

Life is pretty exciting for me xDD

When I was younger I used to think of inanimate objects having personalities, but I'm not sure if this was synesthesia. Sometimes when I was moving stuff around, like say a lamp, I ended up leaving it where it was because it wanted to be near my desk. Or maybe I put on a particular shirt because I never wore it as much as the others, so it was sad. I'm constantly having to remind myself that these things couldn't actually feel for my actions.

UndertakerisEpic In reply to LittleFearless [2013-12-22 22:02:25 +0000 UTC]

I get this as well, however I also don't know if it is synesthesia. I tend to do the same with clothes, and also tend to use art supplies I haven't used in a while for fear that they feel left out. I also use colours I don't normally use when painting for fear that they feel useless. I often change mugs in case one feels sad or left out, same with cuddly toys and seats on a sofa.

I remember as a kid trying to convince my mom not to throw away a really old, gross, smelly mop because the broom loved her and it would break his heart. Or how I have to have a certain lamp by a bookshelf at all times because the lamp is an avid book reader and gets upset.

I also remember my mom having flash cards of multiplication and I refused to do 8x3 even if I knew the answer, because 8 is a HUGE bully and will push 3 around if 5 isnt there. And how the colors and the card were wrong--
"No mommy, 2 is bright green, and 7 is yellow and 8 is dark purple like an eggplant. And of course 4 is dark green"
"Why is 4 dark green?"
"Because F is dark green."

Serene-Oxaroo In reply to Recklessfire00 [2014-06-11 23:32:34 +0000 UTC]

To me, eight is six's big brother and always male, four is quiet, and seven is sneaky and devious. Oh and nine is mean too.
I guess I never liked odd numbers..? XD
I also associate numbers with letters and colors. Like:
4 is F and brown
7 is H and a blue shade
And so forth.

I understand you completely!!!!!!!! Everything has a face and feelings'!!!! I understand that. But 2 is peach, 7 is rusty orange and green,8 is brown, 4 is blue, and f is green. Your perseption is so different from me. HA. I absolutely love it.

i just love this
i have synesthesia too
i see colours in music a bit but especially letters of the alphabet!
if you look at work from when i was just a child, my letters are all coloured in in weird and random hues, but it made sense to me because they were the colours i believed the letters to be! It frustrated me when other people coloured the letters in the 'wrong' colours hahaha

I taste and feel words on my tongue. I'm not 100% sure if it's word association or not, but it does get interesting from time to time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Imnurhest In reply to Serene-Oxaroo [2014-06-12 00:29:35 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the word. For me, the word "joke" tastes like a carrot.

Its kind of.... blissful. It doesn't seem to be disturbing like other neurological conditions

I love to see the colour of music

I love the vibrant colors and how the ripples are seamlessly formed.
I feel music, like it's an invisible and intangible thing that's constantly changing, and I feel words on my tongue when i'm talking or writing. It's almost like water's coming out my mouth, but it has a different texture and flow that most liquids do.

eivanly In reply to CrystalOokami [2015-03-03 00:42:50 +0000 UTC]

I know exactly what you mean about words! I haven't met anyone else who "feels" them Your water description is interesting...I get that sometimes, but more often its a certain kind of fullness, vague sensation, or almost an emotion.Β
