Description Biggest one yet!

I thought it would be fun to introduce horror-characters that are more exclusive to literature, as opposed to the ones that have had their stories adapted to film numerous times.

Though it doesn't completely hold up, 'The Monk' by Matthew Gregory Lewis is still a real blast for the not-so-squeamish horrorfans. I especially love the angry mobscenes. Lewis really knows how to get the blood pumping with those.

Along with 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' and 'The Castle of Otranto', 'The Monk' is definitely a must-read for anyone who wants to look into the origins of the Gothic genre.

The character 'Ambrosio' was created by Matthew Gregory Lewis.
The character 'Erik' was created by Gaston Leroux.

Erik, I think you need to talk to Tim Burton about remaking your movie. I cant really think of anyone else who can save you'r image as creepy... I heard rumors he was thinking about it, but he may need some... persuasion.

It must be done, too many Gaerik fans are screwing up his scary creepyness. Poor Erik needs his scary make over. Pronto

Holy shit I laughed SO HARD.

I loved the crack about his sister. We just got done reading TheMonk in my English class and I really liked it. I had a hard time reading it sometimes, but I really liked it.

This comic made my day.

Good on you! Though I should probably warn you that there's really some twisted stuff in 'The Monk'. Just sayin'

So, "The Monk"? I will have to investigate this book.

F-warp In reply to LabyrinthineMind [2010-06-12 10:19:58 +0000 UTC]

Good on you! Though I should warn you: there's some seriously nasty stuff in 'The Monk'. How nasty? Well let's just say that the Marquis de Sade listed it as one of his favourite books.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

LabyrinthineMind In reply to F-warp [2010-06-12 13:33:39 +0000 UTC]

Wow. Seriously? I'm not sure if that's really freaky or really awesome. Or maybe a little bit of both.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

F-warp In reply to LabyrinthineMind [2010-06-12 17:02:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, I already hint at some of the more twisted stuff in the comic and I'm not kidding when I say that it's the first real shock-horror novel. Then again, in Phantom of the Opera Christine bashes her head against a brick wall in an attempt to commit suicide (though that's one part of the novel people tend to "conveniently" forget). 'The Monk' is still worse though.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

LabyrinthineMind In reply to F-warp [2010-06-12 19:25:19 +0000 UTC]

See, is it sad that that's the one intelligent thing Christine does in the entire book and she fails even at that?

I'll have to see if I can find a copy of "The Monk". It sounds like it would be interesting to say the very least.

cool! I think I will read The monk as soon as I find it in library- thanks for the tip. And I really love that lil "Quasimodo" kid - he has wonderfull expressions.

F-warp In reply to CarolineCream [2009-11-07 21:34:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The Monk shouldn't be too hard to track down. I recently spotted some new Oxford World's Classics and Penguin Classics editions of it, those are pretty common in any decent English bookstore.

Youre welcome
For Monk I ยดll try local bookstore, because I rather read in czech language (well, i ยดm too lazy to read novels in english, althrough I watch movies without subtitles)

Noone special. I had a hard time finding an appropriate kid-monster character from any existing horrorstory so I thought I'd just cook one up myself.
