How so? Even the F-101 and F-105 had retractable probe type refueling equipment in addition to the boom receptacle (sorta AC/DC )

The acft w/ the boom receptacle fly formation under the tanker. They are guided by lights on the belly called 'the captain's bars' by the boom operator. The 'Boomer' flies the boom into the receptacle.
