Description
FUNK TILL THE BITTER FUCKING END!!So this is the pimped out version of the right hand side image of the Badfunk Triptych .
Not really much to say here other than that it was hella fun to do some serious rendering again. I don't think I'll be painting any of the other Triptych pieces like this, cause frankly I don't have a lot of time, and other, to me more pressing, ideas in my head that need to come out.
By the way, let me know what you think of the typography. I just want to know if it's readable to you. The kind of effect I am going for is that it is easily enough readable when you're looking at it, but doesn't constantly penetrate your vision when it's only in the corners of your eyes, if that makes sense. Basically I hope it's not super distracting and attention demanding, but not hard to read either when you try.
//EDIT: by the way, beats me why I didn't mention this three years ago or whenever I posted this, but I didn't invent the type. I don't want to take credit for something I didn't do, Eduardo Recife from Misprinted Type ( [link] ) is the brilliant mind responsible for that. I hand lettered this particular one, just for the visual effect. Also, that's not supposed to be an excuse, if you think that anything about the typography doesn't work it's definitely my fault. Just wanted to give credit where it's due (even if waaaaaaayyyyyy too late, really).
Just for fun, process screen shots:

Plus, some people asked for wallpaper version of the Triptych. I never provided any of those. If there's still interest, let me know. Meanwhile, here's a wallpaper-able version of this one: [link]
Done entirely in Photoshop CS.

Good show, sir; I absolutely love this piece. After 2 or so years of lurking DA, this is the only piece that I've commented on and favorited on. Simply incredible.

I am sure you get tired of hearing raves.
Here goes:
I love the use of light here... genius. Your work is VERY believable in the structure of the face (even tho it is stylized).
THEN I also love the way the smoke is highly stylized and organic... so beautiful. Mostly I would be afraid to try and meld these two styles but you have pulled it off.

Pretty readable I think, though it did take me a few seconds to read the "l" after the ornate "A"--probably because of all the swirlies and whatnot. But still, I think if you aren't trying to read it, it just looks like a pretty design in the left corner and isn't distracting at all to the integrity of the figure.
...on that note, I love the lighting you put in here! Especially on the jacket and tie, I can't stop staring at those parts (and those hands!) for some reason. Very sweet job.

Good shit, man. I love the colors and quality of light. Reminds me of Bioshock, perhaps because of the old-school designs and grim mood.

Actually. It depends on the type of the commission. I can't commit to any long term projects at all. I might be up for single images, but I would prefer only offering coloring commissions. If that's still of interest to you, let me know, maybe we can work something out.

RNABrandEnt In reply to FabianMonk [2007-11-30 21:45:41 +0000 UTC]
Ok, well, it would be a single image, pretty much a color job over one of my images, but I need it to look a certain way.
If you have time for a color job, what would your rate be, or is it on your page anywhere to view?
D.

FabianMonk In reply to RNABrandEnt [2007-12-01 16:04:19 +0000 UTC]
It depends on the complexity of the image. I don't really do prices per image, I usually charge per hour, and it's 20 dollars an hour. So I would have to see the image first, and then I can make an estimate of how long I think that would take me, and then we can go from there.
There's two corrections included in the price, which means you can ask for two changes, after that I start charging extra. The changes are like of medium proportion. Which means I'm happy to change the image to a certain degree, but if you want me to, for example, completely repaint the image, then that exceeds just being a "correction" and I'd charge extra for that.
