Description
FUNK TILL THE BITTER FUCKING END!!So this is the pimped out version of the right hand side image of the Badfunk Triptych .
Not really much to say here other than that it was hella fun to do some serious rendering again. I don't think I'll be painting any of the other Triptych pieces like this, cause frankly I don't have a lot of time, and other, to me more pressing, ideas in my head that need to come out.
By the way, let me know what you think of the typography. I just want to know if it's readable to you. The kind of effect I am going for is that it is easily enough readable when you're looking at it, but doesn't constantly penetrate your vision when it's only in the corners of your eyes, if that makes sense. Basically I hope it's not super distracting and attention demanding, but not hard to read either when you try.
//EDIT: by the way, beats me why I didn't mention this three years ago or whenever I posted this, but I didn't invent the type. I don't want to take credit for something I didn't do, Eduardo Recife from Misprinted Type ( [link] ) is the brilliant mind responsible for that. I hand lettered this particular one, just for the visual effect. Also, that's not supposed to be an excuse, if you think that anything about the typography doesn't work it's definitely my fault. Just wanted to give credit where it's due (even if waaaaaaayyyyyy too late, really).
Just for fun, process screen shots:

Plus, some people asked for wallpaper version of the Triptych. I never provided any of those. If there's still interest, let me know. Meanwhile, here's a wallpaper-able version of this one: [link]
Done entirely in Photoshop CS.

Combination of flat stylized smoke and pseudo-realistic plantman is a wonderful combination. I really like the musty yellow lighting, it makes me think he's in a corner of some kind of shifty criminal's den, taking a smoke.
His hands look absolutely brutal- and I'm really fond of his cherry nose. I wish I could achieve your level of detail and realism one day! :B I'm so stuck in the shiny animu rut, this stuff makes me want to break out of that. One day!

Thanks a lot!
And don't think you're stuck, it's all in how much you want it. If you're dedicated and persistent enough you can break out of any habit, especially in art. Just takes some serious study sometimes.

The typography is in no way distracting and it's easy to read when you focus on it. Kudos.
As far as the image itself goes, I couldn't love it more if I tried. Reminds me of a good friend of mine in an odd way. GIVE ME PRINT ACCESS DAMN YOU.

I don't think I'm going to make prints quite yet. As far as I know, there's not enough people who would buy them. And if I'm going to invest in a premium print account (anything else seems like a waste of time honestly, judging from the tiny fraction of money you get...) then I want it to be worth it.
But sometime in the future maybe! Thanks definitely for the interest, very flattering. Cheers!

First off... mind blowing. This is crazy.
I love your design of the dead funkster. You did an exceptional job painting the wrinkles on his head and hands. The coloring of his skin is amazing, too. His suit is immaculate. I'm a sucker for pinstripe. I think his suit had to be red instead of black, it would just give the picture a whole different feel if it were black. Very nice color choice.
And, as everyone keeps saying, I love that cigar smoke! It has this 20's look about it, as well as a 70's at the same time. With that being said, it also looks like graffiti a wall behind him. Its a very nice design element, how you blended the smoke into a record.
I also like how you broke the lines and put that circle around his arm, leading into the type. I think the type is nice, you can tell what it says right off, but it might be a little too "designy" to really be a good font. The lighting setup you have leads the viewers eye right to the guys face, and how you have the smoke and type falling off and fading into the darkness keeps most of the attention on the face, so the type doesn't interfere with the rest of it. Personally, I like the A, but the rest seems too jumbled. Of course, it might not benefit you to choose another font. If it is easier to read, it might draw more unwanted attention, and not fit so well with the smoke.
This picture is crazy awesome, man!

All done in Photoshop CS you said. I see the sketch of the cigar smoke but how did you finalize the design of it? Overall, very nice piece, I particulary like the cigar smoke swirls and curves. Is that just pen tool stuff or did you sketch it out as in your WIP link1, and then refine it with a bolder brush? I've seen a lot of that stuff lately (swirls, very illustratorish graphic design shapes and lines) and I was wondering what the most efficient way would be to create them. The newest IPOD commercials use a lot of that bold, graphic, almost grafitti type design. How'd ya do it? Good stuff and thanks for sharing!

FabianMonk In reply to fr00kie [2007-11-29 22:51:32 +0000 UTC]
I just drew it with a brush. Sometimes I used the circle tool to get perfect circles here and there, but the final lines were all traced by hand. I can pretty much guarantee that that's not the most efficient way. But I just don't know how to use the pen tool, and every time I try it just frustrates me. One day, maybe...

I don't really mind that, I was sort of going for the warmth. If you take a look at the step by step, I pretty much changed the color scheme from cold to warm halfway through, so it was all intentional.

Ah, as long as it was intentional. I do like it, I wasn't going for a critique or anything just a suggestion.

brilliant work my friend!!
thanks esp for posting your wip screens. really helps me understand your work flow.
i think your type dead on for the wallpaper size, non-distracting yet interesting.
although, it becomes a little trickier to read on the smaller sizes. If you want it to be more readable for them, try using a more solid texture.
cheers! ^_^
