Description some unrelated wolf art and more Spearheart. Also Girl Talk!

Why the commentary? Cuz I don't give a damn how someone draws their imaginary characters. Both extremes are stupid, fun AND valid given different circumstances (it's all in how you set up your universe, folks). And I find it surprising that a LOT of people on DA get weird comments about drawing a "correct" wolf, or drawing any stylized (or not) wolves at all. I don't see the same rabid fascination with LITERAL accuracy or ZOMG crazy MLP-style with bats or pangolins or wee little dachshunds.
Is this in response to comments on my own work? Of course it is, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't. But I dare any viewer to say this isn't a common source of angst all over DA. And what needless angst it is. I find the whole debate more lol-worthy than anything. And that's not sarcasm, I really do love the strange things people come up with and think whatever way artists are expressing themselves, it's a treat to look at what they've accomplished.

Also that weirdo wolf is so much goddamn fun to draw. And realistic wolfy there is just so Winnie the Pooh adorable.

Oh, like all the people who tell me my wolves look "fat"? XD Like, gee, they ALL look that way. All of them in my gallery except the ones I've exaggerated stylism and thinness for. DURRRRRHHHHHH. XD

I LIKES MAH CHUBBY FATARSE WOLVES. o.o;

You've got a freakish range of style ability btw. O.o

I think when people have demonstrated the ability to draw photo-realistic creatures, benefit of the doubt is allowed when they claim "style" as a reason for why they do another creature a certain way. It's not something that is brought up for defense of course (you risk making yourself look like an ass if you do), but I've seen many a painting and illustration with less than accurate anything among professionals doing studio level work to understand that absolute realism doesn't equal quality.

"I'm not a camera, I have an imagination."

Exactly!

Granted, I still have a loooong way to go to have the versatility a lot of folks I watch here have. And there are days I wish I could draw more stuff that's less "cute" without effort. Every so often I manage it, but I seem to have a big dividing line between "cute" and "creepy" and I can't get that "pretty" in between. It annoys the heck outta me.

Not to mention the lack of angles and poses but that's more a sign I need to get off my butt and practice more again... I've gotten lazy.

Quite a while back, one of the deviants I watched posted a tutorial on how to draw wolves correctly, because they didn't feel that people here were drawing wolves right. I made a comment there that not everyone draws the same way, nor is everybody necessarily going for a realistic look (*lol* I'm a realistic wildlife painter, and most of my favorite artists here at dA are the ones who draw anime-style wolves, with the big hair, markings, and such, which I love. I was never very good at cartooning, so I like to see the work of people who are good at it, and I love wolves). But I was a little irritated that somebody decided that their way to draw wolves was the only correct way, and so I felt it necessary to point that out to them. I have to wholeheartedly agree - if it's your own imaginary character, draw them however you like!

It's not unique to wolves, that much I've learned. First con I went to, I had a long discussion with another realistic painter who told me about comments regarding her lions having noses one millimeter off and things of that nature.

*lol* That's just crazy! Although I did once have someone tell me, regarding my painting of an eagle perched on top of a building, that you'd NEVER see an eagle perched on top of a building in real life! So apparently, in all of history, no eagle has ever perched on top of a building somewhere!

FablePaint In reply to RaptorPainter [2010-04-21 02:49:56 +0000 UTC]

That perception probably has more to do with the fact that eagle prey isn't prevalent in urban environments (at least if they're fish eaters or chase other "large" game) whereareas bird and rodent eaters like hawks and falcons have ample reason to move into cities. However there's nothing physically preventing an eagle from perching on a building, but it just goes to show how people think themselves instant experts because they mastered Google.

My only point is that people need to be clear about what they're drawing, if someone does a very realistic picture, and talks about how realistic it is supposed to be, and had one detail off, then flies in someones face when they point out the detail, that's not cool. It's also not cool when someone starts correcting all the details on something that is clearly a cartoon. I think the most important thing to remember when critiqued, is that you don't have to do what the other person suggests, just be polite to them, and go on doing what you were doing anyway, no one can force you to change your art style.

Might I just say, that upside down lols are the best kind?

And I completely agree. Who's to say what is the 'proper' way of expressing oneself? Because Warner Bros was so realistic and all.

OMG UR NOT DOING IT RITE!!!

And then a beginner becomes all disheartened and potentially copies a 'correct' style... and then gets busted for 'style theft'. Love the drama, just wish I could give those newbies some confidence to keep doing what they feel like doing and not stressing about it being 'correct'...

Like you put it, there's nothing 'wrong' with drawing a stylized animal, but if it doesn't fit into its environment/story/etc., then I see some issues there. I mean, if, for example, Bolt had been a red and blue dog with black hair in his environment, compared with other characters, it would have just stood out and not blended in at all with the movie. Of course, if the world in which a character is 'different' than a real animal might be, like in Disney's Fantasia 2000 (the portion with flying horses, centaurs, etc), it fits well, as the other characters were just as wild.

Interesting em.. 'wolf' you have there, haha, good point, and nice sketches :3

A friend of mine got some shit for not drawing her female characters anatomy correctly...when she was drawing cartoon styled characters. When anyone told this person the characters were stylized, they coped an attitude and said anyone who disagreed with them was a 'white knight' and couldnt handle 'critique'. Its not useful critique if it goes against the purpose of the art. You dont tell a cubism artist their people's anatomy looks off, so why do cartooning artists get so much flak. Believable is a goal, but not realism.

Im getting a little fed up with the high and mighty attitude of many artists in general, but this issue really bugs me. Critique is nice, but it is very dependent on the goal of the work. Not all anatomy has to cater to realism when its not meant to in the first place.

It's not even artists, it's self-appointed "art critics", typically teenage girls with a bone to pick with the world, who get VERY upset if you don't completely agree with their opinions. It's not even specifically that, but the whole overdrawn angst over anything wolf related that I find very tiresome. I wouldn't run into the same problems if I all the characters were bears or dinosaurs.
Now if I didn't expect and couldn't handle that kind of criticism, I wouldn't be posting my stuff on the internet. But then I also don't think that attitude isn't free from mockery, especially when I've a lot of experience receiving critique in the real world and handling it properly (accepting or rejecting suggestions or observations with delicacy), enough to recognize when critique is critique and when it's just personal taste masquerading as critique.

I totally agree. I hate when you're trying to make a fantasy character to fit in with your own fantasy land/realm whatever, and people try to correct you. It's amusing when they go on and on about it even after you've explained, too
I personally love seeing different artists styles and I think that's what arts about: expressing yourself through your own view on what something looks like, behaves like, or even just is.

If you're doing a story, it has everything to do with context. Ginga Dentestu Gin and Weed had BLUE dogs running around and it worked because it made sense when they were compared against the other cast members and the environment. If you have a extremely cartoony environment and have a very realistic animal, or the opposite (a way cartoony animal in a realistic environment), they stand out. But then that can be a statement too, but as I said, it has everything to do with context.

I LoL'd. If you're drawing a cartoon character, I don't understand why it matters? The only time it bothers me is when they're actually trying to draw it realistically or they get a bunch of comments that say OMG YOUR ANATOMY IS LIEK GOD.

As far as your drawings go...I don't understand why anyone would apply this to you? You draw cartoon sketches...you're going for emotiveness, not realism. Don't they get that? I'm sure no one is trying to correct Donald Duck's anatomy. That's just lame.

Btw I am in love with Srz Bznss headphones wolf. He needs to be a mascot for -something-.
