Description
By no means the most comprehensive list of raven behaviors, and I can't claim to any special expertise, but I thought it would be useful to compile most of what I've learned into a handy sheet for future reference. I hope you find it useful too! Here's a video featuring more information!

A flock of Ravens is called a Mischief? I thought it was called an Unkindness, we learn something new everyday I guess.

You'll find a lot of animal group nouns are not codified, or commonly used. So you'll find either multiple group nouns for the same animal, or it just not being used at all. For example, calling a group of ravens a "flock" because that comes more naturally than a "mischief" or "unkindness" based on the common rules of English.

I'm always curious about ravens. I keep rats and my experience with them is so different from the general "knowledge" most people have of them (not in the "they are preshus darlings who won't hurt anybody ever" way, but all those stories about rats biting ears off babies make much more sense now that I understand the logic behind it) and it makes me wonder if the general idea I have of ravens is also wrong because I never watched them closely.

I guess that's dependent on your general idea! There's a lot of doom and gloom associated with ravens that doesn't really match the actual animal. They're very playful and one of the, if not THE, most intelligent avian. On par with chimpanzees.

Yeah, I know! I just wonder of the small details I'm missing. Like rats are considered very smart and they are smart in certain areas but are complete idiots when it comes to other things and it's sort of hard to describe it without long-winded explanations.

I like explanations. Or documentaries. Those are great too.

This is the most I've probably ever learned about ravens in one sitting. Ravens got no respect for their elders, yo. I'm pretty sure it's the music they're listening to.

Our ravens make a very interesting sound that is somewhere between a small bell ringing and water droplets hitting a pan. We had one that would sit on the fence and "talk" at one of the horses for a couple years.
Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing.

The behavior of ravens is fun to watch, especially youngsters learning the ropes of survival. Although, it's fun and a bit creepy when you start having a pair follow you around. .-. Still, cutest bird ever in my opinion.

This is great. I worked with a very vocally talented raven for about a year at a wildlife sanctuary/museum. We call her "Hello" because she can perfectly mimic the word "hello" in several different ways with a very pretty feminine human-sounding voice. My favorite bird <3
Did you know that another fun name for a flock of ravens is a "conspiracy"? They have the best flock names.

Yeah I have a lot of experience with parrots, but parrot behavior is not corvid behavior. So I wanted to avoid writing my own ravens as if they were bumbling potato burds rather than bumbling black burds.

UnfortunateCorvid In reply to FablePaint [2013-10-05 18:10:48 +0000 UTC]
Haha, oh yeah, from what I've seen, even though they're both highly intelligent species, parrots and corvids are very different, which makes it all the more interesting to learn about them.Β
I do plan on buying a white-necked raven (or hybrid) in the future, but this and the link you provided will definitely help in writing before I can get the real, hands-on experience either by having one or working with them in wildlife sanctuaries.

I loved working with the ravens at a local zoo + would recommend it highly.Β They weren't too loving of humans, but still fascinating. There was one, I think a girl, who was a little friendly and would try to teach me raven words :3Β They are amazing birds and volunteering at the zoo (it was a sanctuary as well) was pretty amazing overall!

Oh wow that sounds great. I also want to work with birds (dunno if it'd include ravens) at a zoo. Interesting how that one tried to teach you. I want to try to teach mine words when I get it but that would be cool for it to teach me, too.Β

ha ha, yeah, hopefully I'm not anthropomorphizing, but the buggers were so damn smart.Β They would poop on people they didn't like, which was just about everyone XDΒ I still enjoyed cleaning up after them, gross as it was.Β Birds are messy and meat eaters... well.Β It wa like they tried to decorate all the trees for Christmas.Β With feces and mouse gutsΒ 8D

Took me way too , long to respond but yeah I've read how they are smart enough to distinguish between people and will even avoid hunters when they know their faces. Amazing creatures they are. Can't wait to work with corvids and other birds.Β
That C-mas tree sounds like it was splendidly gross.Β

This is fantastic!
I've been fortunate enough to observe ravens in the wild (they only live in the mountains around here) and I can say it's an amazing experience. I've seen them pass a piece of bark back and forth to each other in flight and make many different kinds of vocalizations and engage in the most amazing flight behaviors, taking full advantage of ridge lift. They are very acrobatic.
I haven't seen you mention it elsewhere, so maybe I missed it, but congratulations on joining the Flight Rising art team.

Thanks!Β
Yeah there's a lot of ravens in my area. At my old studio, there was a nesting pair I saw frequently and a huge mess of crows. Occasionally I'd see several ravens at once and wondered why I saw a bunch, then barely any. Knowing about their territorial behavior and how juveniles act makes sense.
