Hello, just wondering, does Adobe photoshop 8 have channels? Or is it maybe under a different name? Because i really want to use the techniques in this tutorial but can't

It's available in all newer incarnations of Photoshop since I made this tutorial. (And there is no Such thing as Adobe 8.0. They stopped at the 7 series and all versions afterwards have been CS#). I'm using CS5 now and still use the same method to isolate linework via channel selection.

Oh, i didn't realise it was referred to as CS, thanks I don't know where it is then... i've searched for it in help, and looked on google to see if the version i have has a channels option, and can't find anything... Maybe it's just me.

If you don't have it open... Manually open it:

Window > Channel

Yeah.. it's not there.. if it was that easy i would have had it already open...

fablespinner In reply to WingsFor-Marie [2011-12-15 22:38:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes... it is. EVERY Adobe photoshop has Channels. Go to the top select WINDOW.. the drop down menu CHANNELS.

Window>Channels

That's what that means.

If you can't find this. You need to read your owner's manual to find where everything is because it *IS* there. It is located exactly where I told you it is located. I've told you where to look and you're having difficulty still. Which tells me you're a beginner. Perhaps editing channels is slightly more advanced than you're capable of right now.

Check out this link: Photoshop CS for Dummies desk reference manual: [link]

that will also help you learn the very basics of your program.

Ok... i am not 'New' at photoshop... I may sound like a noob because i didn't know it was called CS, or can't find something in the program, but i have used it many times before... And i DO know what the window bar does. I'm not trying to be difficult, and i'm sorry if i'm frustrating you, that wasn't the intention, but if it helps, i'm also frustrating myself.

Anyway... I think I know what the problem is, and if it is the reason for the problem then i /have/ been stupid- does photoshop elements have channels?

And if this isn't the problem then i seriously don't have it, or it's under some different name.

fablespinner In reply to WingsFor-Marie [2011-12-16 00:27:05 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop elements is a COMPLETELY different program and if it has channels I have no idea where it is located. I was giving you instructions for Photoshop CS versions and up... Photoshop Elements is only the barest bones of Photoshop and has a completely different interface that I know of. I have never used the program. Go to that link I sent, they have an elements tutorial there for a quick desk reference.

By the way I wasn't calling you a "dummy" that's the branded name of the manual series. "_________________ for Dummies" they have those books for just about everything you want to learn.

When you use this method, do you work in a very high resolution? The problem I usually encounter is that the lines end up looking 'grainy', as if they're pixels on a string rather than brush strokes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fablespinner In reply to chilalisnowbird [2010-02-02 13:40:16 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I never work in anything under 300DPI (Print quality).
I usually draw in 600 DPI (I never use paper anymore) and I draw directly into Manga Studio (Best program for smooth inking, it mimics real ink beautifully.) I draw in 600 DPI so I can really get in close for fine detail (like individual eyelashes etc...). Then I export from MANGA STUDIO into a 300DPI PSD file. Then I do the above tutorial to isolate the lineart on it's own layer, then I color underneath the lineart layer.

chilalisnowbird In reply to fablespinner [2010-02-02 13:59:55 +0000 UTC]

-nod- I paint in 300 dpi as well, but I do it in PhotoShop which is probably the culprit for the pixellation, then. To remedy this, I tend to work in a very large size so that I can scale down to an acceptable quality in the end.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fablespinner In reply to chilalisnowbird [2010-02-02 14:51:45 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly the culprit. Photoshop is great for color, SUCKS for smooth lineart if you're drawing directly into the computer and not scanning paper. It is pixel based so you will get a "jitter" when trying to draw long narrow lines. MangaStudio you can adjust the "jitter" (Auto smooth) levels to suit your hand and change what style "pen" you use. From typical ball point, to G Pens, to my favorite bamboo brush, I use that almost exclusively. *I LOVE IT*.

Well, that sounds like I need to check out Manga Studio, definitely, because this is something that has been annoying the living sh*t out of me for weeks!

This is the program I use: [link]
I've been using it for about 4 years now, I adore it.

You can even doodle on paper, scan it in, import the scanned jpg into Manga studio and use your pencil drawing like a light box and just trace your paper pencil lines in MS in a new layer and you'll get clean digital lines.

It's a win win situation.

I am definitely checking this out. I never quite recovered from Adobe's discontinuation of Adobe Streamline, and inking has been a female canine ever since. I will never understand why they discontinued that product without incorporating the functionality in either Illustrator or PhotoShop. It's -begging- for people to defect to the competition!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fablespinner In reply to chilalisnowbird [2010-02-04 11:29:15 +0000 UTC]

I never used streamline, I went right to the competition. LOL

chilalisnowbird In reply to fablespinner [2010-02-04 11:42:26 +0000 UTC]

I didn't know of any competition back when I started using Streamline in.. early 90s? Something like that.

fablespinner In reply to chilalisnowbird [2010-02-04 12:10:07 +0000 UTC]

MangaStudio is the American Version of the Software "ComicWorks" that was a Japanese program from the mid to late 90's. I picked up a copy around 2001 (And nothing was in English, Everything was in Kanji and I had to "guess" what things did.) Then SmithMirco (eFrontier) picked up distributing rights for the US in I think 2004, translated the program and now I know what all the tool are.

Prior to that I just used Adobe 4.0, then onto 5.5, 7.0 CS2 now CS4
I did all my lineart by hand and scanned it up until about 2003, Then I used OpenCanvas for a while to ink at first because it was smoother than Adobe but not as confusing as my ComicWorks, then MangaStudio came out and I've been almost exclusively digital since then.

chilalisnowbird In reply to fablespinner [2010-02-04 12:36:47 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty much the same process as me, except that I was on a Mac and when Adobe discontinued Streamline instead of updating it for the Jaguar OS I had to get used to inking in PhotoShop instead. I used to scan my lineart in as well but without Streamline to deal with the smudges and ink bleed, well -- so I took to painting directly with a tablet, but I've never quite been able to get rid of that pixelly look. I know, I know, no one else probably even notices when the painting is done and downsized, but you know how it nags at you when you know it's there.

On the up side, at least I don't ink with the -mouse- any longer, I used to do that until a few years back. When I look back now I'm amazed that I had the friggin' patience.

this is odd, it worked for me for the first couple of outlines i scanned in. . . but now it doesn't seem to work. theres' 2 outlines i tried it on, i followed all the directions and yet. . when i delete the BG layer, it only recorded some lines on layer 1. . . and when i zoomed in, the lines didn't look filled in, even though i used the fill tool. agh D: *cry*

I have a problem because my paint bucket tool won't show up and it says it wont work on bitmap files but im not using bitmap files so what files did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fablespinner In reply to edster9 [2008-01-05 23:38:48 +0000 UTC]

PSD files. If you saved your line art as a bitmap, you have to convert it to RGB first and save as a PSD file.
