Description Testing the Waters - Acrylic - 2' X 4' - November 2009

The title of this painting is pretty symbolic of my return to painting. I had started this painting in the summer, wanting to tackle two of my favorite themes... tigers and water. This photo is not my own, but one that I found on a website that offered free photos online. I wish I knew who the photographer was, and with all my efforts, my search for who he/she might be seemed futile and I became reluctant to finish the painting. It sat there for three months, gathering dust, while in the meantime I visited a couple of zoos, and have since built a portfolio of photos of my own, for future references. I actually even started to map out a couple of new paintings, which I was prepared to start, when the calling of this one returned. My original thoughts on painting this tiger, were that all my other wildlife paintings were done in watercolour, and I wanted to test my acrylic abilities. Heck... I just wanted to paint. It had been so long that I hadn't, that I just wanted to paint whatever and whenever. So here you go. It is still unsigned, as seems to be my case, wondering "what if" I just tackle this section a bit more... or "should I" enhance that area a wee bit more... I think I might just let it be, and see what I can muster up in a new creation... my creation, my reference material.

Thanks for looking.

This is incredible...it looks like every stroke was perfectly placed with great care. The style actually looks like a mix between watercolor and acrylic - very precise. I have been working on my acrylic painting skills as well...this is such an inspiration. I'm glad you finished it!

I really like how much detail you put into it. I probably wouldn't have the patience to paint something like that.

Heheheh... thanks so much!! I think!! lol A tutorial, huh? I might be able to put something together... Let me see what I can do, but I have a few other things on the go, so won't be able to do it right away. I will tell you tho, for this painting, I started it out by drawing it first with watercolour pencils. I was then able to take a brush with only water and fill in certain areas as guidlines. I worked on the background first, then the water, and only after I had completed most of the splash, did I start painting the tiger, and the water droplets were one of the last things I added. The splash was the most time-consuming, and even when I thought it was done, once I added the tiger, it was apparent that I had to enhance it even more. I'm happy with the way it turned out, and ready to start something new now!!

lol thankyou for getting back to me

I just think you draw amazing tigers! I'm challenging myself to learn to draw the big cats properly myself atm this is my first attempt [link] so any tips are welcome! I realise it was a bit cheeky asking for a tutorial! would be great if you get time though

So that's how you do them! I have some watercolour pencils kicking about somewhere will have to dust them off! the spash is amazing I'm not suprised it was time consuming! do you always do the backgrounds first?

Actually, I tend to like to work the whole canvas at once, because it's best to include ALL colours, everywhere... gives it a better balance all round... but when finishing up areas, it's just easier to finish the background first, then move to the foreground... Good luck with your drawing!!
