Description
3,825 wordsGasp! Its not Warhammer! But don't worry there will be rattos in this just also a lot of lizards, birds, insects, squirrels, frogs, and deer as well. And magic! This is Chapter 1 of my own fantasy world that I've been working on off and on for a few years now at this point. Mainly meant for DnD but I wanted to try and make a narrative to go along with it. Hope you all enjoy and I'll be happy to answer questions if there are any and hopefully in the future add in more information into the SS/FL folder as well to help.
It started with a spark. Held tightly in the appretince ringers fist. Before slowly the fingers opened to the air. But the spark would not go out. Rather the air arounded it rolled and quietly hissed as it grew. Soon from the bottom of the scaled hand up to just touching the half closed fingers. Giving the claws a light singe. Before the hand was thrown toward the sky. Fingers unfurling to full extension to give the fireball a straight path straight up. The ball of light and power lighting up the interior of the tower as it flew upward toward its target. Finally bursting against the interior of the bell. Sending out a loud ringing across the city. Even reaching out to the dock!
"A good ssshow Lilaik," Towermaster Tallis quipped as the floating blip board next to her was given a cross on it. "But your fireball struck the top of the bell itssself. Thatsss sssome points off." The gently glowing blue hands giving an exaggerated shrug. "Itsss the rulesss after all." Lilaik sighing and nodding as he let the new spark in his hand fade away. He would have another chance to ring it more properly at lunch time. The Lizardfolk moving over to the wall to further study the measurements that were on the wall in the dawn light. To better know exactly how far he was away from the bell. He'd get it right next time. "You'll get it next time!" Tallis encouraged! "Or you won't. And you'll get another job. Like bell polissshing." Always the supportive sort that snake.
But across the courtyard from the tower the ringing would be given a rather rude gesture from the bed of one of the University many residents. Pinced fingers shoved at the window from the waking up student. Well technically an Graduate already - or as the red head fur would correct you in the street an Alumi! Sounded much fancier than what the school called him. And Fireblood wanted to keep their image. Unlike the Lizardfolk currently trying to roll over in bed away from the window that had shaken from the ringing. The contract wouldn't vanish if it wasn't started at dawn itself. He'd be fine.
Sidewinding into the marked location below the bell Tallis would turn toward Lilaik and reach over one of the mage hands to tap his shoulder before the Snake pointed her snout upwards. "Well? Are you giving up thisss chance? More study before trying again?" The male would nod, which Tallis was pleased by as she clapped her 'hands' together before opening them again, a spark of fire in her left and ice in her right as she winked. "Don't worry, you'll get there." Before leaning backwards, far easier to do as her long body supported it, before firing both upwards. The fire shortly before the ice. And as she had done for most of her life by this point the fire reached the center of the university's bell just in time for the ice to impact it. Making a much larger explosion than before as the ringing easily reached out to the slums!
And badly shook all the windows on the university grounds. But they were built with this in mind so were just fine. Unlike those living creatures who were not used to it yet. Second bell. Getcha asses out of bed and get learning or working. At least the smaller first bell helped the younger students not panic when the massive clanger was sounded. And a sigh and grunt snuck out from the pillow that Savron had tried to cover his head with before he took a deep breath and swung out his legs and tail to stand up. Right! Day to begin now! In theory. His still blinking eyes watching an empty glass clink against the floor where his tail had knocked it over from the bedside table. Empty now but formally full of wine - or study inspiration! Adjusting his sleeping smock before stretching back and then forward. Going well so far as he headed over to the drain in the corner of his room. Stepping over the small stone step into the basin before tossed the smock back onto the bed. The Kobolds would get that later. Gota be quick before all the good coffee was taken. Shaking out his hands the Lizardfolk would stifle a yawn before sparking up ice in his left hand and sticking it on the spike above the drain. Before flicking the hand again to form a small flame. Holding it up near the now presented ice as the water started to pour down over his scales and horns. Luke warm. Better than the dock water. His free hand grabbing some soup to add to the water for a quick clean. Shoulders and chest, stomach and tail, thighs, and feet. Hed be out of the city most of the day so didn't need to be perfect. Not like he was going to a party. Tonight that is. The flame soon held near himself to dry him of the water as he stepped out of the drain before moving to the small dresser.
Sav would glance at the letter he still hadn't opened yet on the top, Fireblood seal still pristine, before crouching down and grabbing his clothing. It could wait till he had good news. And thankfully due to his scales clothing himself was nice and quick. A warm kilt and low hanging shoulder cape with some foot wrappings. Stylish and blue. Perfect for his warm orange scales. A gilded golden clip soon pulling his hair back into a pony tail to keep it out of his face on the road. And of course be stylish. And then it was a simple matter of grabbing his book satchel, now packed with food and containers, and the short sword. Securing them to his belt and over his shoulder as he backstepped to the mirror. Looking good! Giving himself a thumbs up before snapping his finger with a small spurt of flame. The contract was for the forest today. Damp and disgusting. More attire. Tossing off his cape Sav would quickly slip a blue shirt over his torso before the cape was secured again. Breathing heavily over the red gem clasp for the cloak before giving it a quick sleeve polish before another mirror check. Better!
A last check of his room and gear before out in the hall strode the Lizardfolk, turning to shut the door before slipping the key into a pocket. The Kobold staff would be able to get in with their own keys but peace of mind was important. Especially in a busy place like this. The staff and the eager already out and about in the halls as Savron quickly moved to the side to avoid the rumbling of a trolly that was pushed past him. Full of soap and towels. Uh oh. "Someone's gona get a finnnne," he'd whisper to himself before quickly falling into step behind the cart. Better to walk behind this as everyone else would get out of the way of it! Good stuff. The four Kobolds moving and holding things onto the cart glancing back and raising scaley eye ridges at Sav as they questioned what he was doing.
"Oh nothing! Just using your excellent work to help me get out and about faster."
"To what? Another messy party?" Ah so that's what had done the stupid?
"Well hah...not this time. Contract work actually. The Guild you know!"
"How nice for you, don't die or something."
"Aww I can feel the care just oozing from you all!"
"Well if you do," the female with the most decorated tail commented. "Are we sending your stuff back to Fireblood or are you donating it to the University?" Sav would side mouth at that a bit as he slowed down. He never did finish that part of his graduation contract. Giving the cart time to get away and around a corner. Would he want his stuff sent back home? Would they demand it back or not even care? It was so hard to tell sometimes with the family elders. Before his stomach growling made him blink and see that he had missed his chance for an easy walk. Something to worry about later! Besides, confidence is the first step toward success! Or something like that.
Heading down a different hallway Savron would follow his nose toward the warm earthy smell coming from the Alchemy section of the grounds. At least some of them seemed to be up all the time doing all the experimentations and mixing together to get it all just right. And sometimes it wasn't - but hey that meant it wasn't as much to buy compared to established places out in the city proper. A Graduate he was but any chance to save money should be taken if its not vital. Need to show he's successful in some way. Stepping out into the courtyard the Lizard would jog across the stone toward the wing where all the lovely smells were exuding from. And the windows were already open with their shutters let down to hang by their chains to be makeshift tables. And there were only a few other University attendees in line! Perfect. Quickly falling into the back Sav would peak around looking to see what kind of brews were being served up this morning. It looked like a pretty basic black mix. But with some milk and mixing going into it too. It would do well to get him up and moving till he was on the road.
Though of course the issue with grabbing Alchemist Brews was you needed to hang around to give a grade not just grab and go. But cheaper and made right in front of you so you knew it was fresh. That in itself was a fine boon. And soon enough it was his turn. seven copper handed over rather than one silver. And moving to the side he would blow the steam off the cup before taking a mouthfull. It was pretty strong. "Bitter?" He would humm to the Snake at the next window table arrangement that was taking notes. "Good though. Kind of like a strong push behind you to get up and going rather than the more gentle pull from your front compared to yesterday? More potent for sure." A click of his tongue as he swirled the cup a few times. "Smells nicer too. It would depend on what you need this for. A slow morning to enjoy? Not at all." Finishing off the coffee as he nodded and set the glass down. "But if you need to get up and going fast? Really good." The snake nodding and scribing that down with their glowing hands before giving the Lizardfolk a shoo gesture with them. The mage hands then smacking Savrons hand as he reached for another one.
"Ah ah! You want another you pay, you know the rulesss!"
"Awww, no bonus for a good grade?"
"Hot air issssn't worth the glassss you can blow fluff tail. Off with ye!" The floofy tipped tail giving a flick in her direction before Savron headed off. He would need to start soon if he wanted to be back before nightfall. Sure that wasn't a requirement but ugh. The idea of spending a night in that damn forest was something that didn't even bear thinking about. Maybe he could catch a returning ship for the trip back but he would still need to get there. Find the crystals, glancing down to check to make sure he had the list in his bag before nodding, and then get back. Hopefully a one day event and he wouldn't need to go back again. Making sure his satchel was shut again Sav would turn on one foot and head out of the University grounds toward the city itself.
Passing through the imposing main University gate with the expertly carved Auro sat in the middle, his wings forming the top of the gate as traffic passed in on his right and out on his left. Sav giving the effigy of the Dragon a wink and a little finger guns with a puff of fire as he walked past. He was the boss after all. Before back on task. He still needed breakfast. The food he'd packed was for lunch and not anything really great but it would keep. But he was in the city of Auro and needed something better and more substantial than that. Thankfully in the city you didn't need to go far to find food for sale even this early. Though if you didn't want to be gouged like a tourist you would need to look past the store fronts.
Quickly moving away from the University itself Savron would keep his eyes straight ahead. A lot of the most expensive places were right next to the University gates - so they could be closest to the hungry students to get an easy sell. And to those places credit the food was really good as it cost a lot to be able to get property right there. So it was good. But way to much for a quick breakfast before he got going. So eyes forward, don't let the sellers see you looking or they will try to get you over. Then doom. But at the same time Sav needed to keep looking forward so the Avoen who was preaching on the corner didn't focus on him. Quickly moving past him and around the corner as the birds words were barfed out. "Do not be tempted by the sins of this selfish wealth, my friends. Seek guidance in the Mentor's Path! Embrace the compassion for your fellows one and all. And exhume unending love across the land!"
Thankfully the Priest was far too focused on speaking to stop Sav from scooting past. And soon he was a few streets down from the main University itself. Crossing over one of the many small bridges into one of the many business districts. But rather than enter the square of land the lizard was waiting on the entry bridge. They should be around here somewhere...Sav soon spotting the small Gondola he was looking for. The old Kobold already grilling up some meat as their husband gently punted them along. Right on time. "Sofia!" Sav would call as he gave a happy wave. Thankfully the bridge was wide enough that Sav stopping didn't disrupt the traffic.
The olden looking up and smiling as she waved back with the long tongued fork she was using to turn the meat. The boat slowing down as Luca waved as well. "Ah young Savron! Need a quick bite to get ready for the days classes?" He had been past that for almost four months at this point. But he had long given up trying to correct them.
"You know it! Can I get the usual?" Crouching down near one of the large decorative cut outs in the railing as Sav got out one brass and three copper for the meat and bread that was already being prepared. The happy humming from the gondola as it approached making him just smile more. It really helped you feel better when you had things to rely on.
"Of course of course. Keep up the studies Sav! I'm sure you will graduate in no time!" The sandwich soon stuck on the long fork and held up toward the bridge. Luca gently rowing backwards to slow the boat to almost a crawl as Sav reached out for the delicious breakfast. The coins dropped down into the large felt covered box so it wouldn't fly out from the impact. Before the food gently glowed purple and floated right into his hand. Good enough!
"Thank you both! And whoever helped me grab it." Sav would say out loud as the two kobolds smiled and slid under the bridge. Off to sell more bread and meat to those early risers. Luca tucking the oar under his arm as he held his hands together before slowly opening them to make another small ice ball. Setting it in the meat cooler before he began to row their way back down one of the many canals. Off to find more business!
"You really do you have a set of lungs on you sometimes you know," a yellow Lizardfolk now standing beside Sav winked as she slipped a short wand back into her purple sleeves before returning her arm back to around a basket. "At least it makes it easy to find you."
"Nice to see you too Celes. Appreciate the little extra hand there. Nothing worse than watching good hot food fall into the water when it was so close to you. Either the fishes or some Rat or Otter would have probably gotten to it fast enough." Sav adopting the biggest sad face he could at Celes before he solved the sad by taking a big bite of the hot breakfast. Thankfully not trying to speak with his mouth full as he winked back at her.
"Oh I can imagine you would wake up everyone from here to the docks with your wailing at that." Celes comments leaning against the bridge railing, “Immediately letting the fishes know that food is here.”
"They eat well enough with how much other food is dropped in there," Sav would grunt with a mostly empty mouth as he was eyeing the basket she was holding. "Anything for a brave Guild apprentice in there?" The lid slowly lifted up to reveal it was full of pastries, flans, and other freshly baked treats before it would be snapped shut.
"Depends - where is the novice heading today." Awww come on Celes apprentice sounded so much better!
"Forest, Guild wants some more of those crystals for experiments." A hummm from the other as her fingers drummed on that basket of deliciousness. "Did you want one too?"
"Not from there no. But hey if you ever get sent to the Flatlands," Sav narrowing his eyes but not replying yet. "And see any...well. You already have a mission. But if you get your current one done I'm sure you'll be able to do another one." The basket opened up and one of the pastries handed over. "Good luck."
"Why thank you! And I appreciate the vote of confidence but it's not my first time there. Probably just some Tribals complaining. You know how they are."
"Thankfully I don't. Got more important things to plan and businesses to support. Not caring about what things they are throwing at me." The Danish like treat balanced on the remains of the sandwich as Sav took a big bite of the combination meal and desert and then nodded. Chewing and swallowing before responding.
"Thats much better to focus on than what those Hoppers complain about. How's the bakery going on the whole? Great?" Celes nodding with a proud face as a small crowd had started to form as others were now eyeing the half eaten pastry Sav had and the basket that surely contained more.
"It really is, and thankfully you brought more boys to me for business. Eight copper for a pastry! Two silver three copper for two!" Thankfully Sav could extract himself before the crowd got too thick on that bridge.
"See you when back, good luck with the selling!" Hed call over the sound of commerce but if she heard him it wasn't really important. A few more chomps later the now pretty great breakfast would be complete! A small icicle soon formed in his hands which was rubbed between both of them to clean off the crumbs and sticky jam before it was dropped to shatter and soon melt. Another reason to thank Auro making things so simple. Though the Lizard did slow down a little as he saw a group stumbling down the street ahead of him. Someone was sure in trouble from the shouting toward the back. Though as he waited he would half extend his pointer and middle finger before closing his other hand over them. A small sphere of ice soon between those two fingers and tossed into his mouth for a clean and drink as the voice got more clear.
"If you cannot walk straight I will force you to! One more complaint about stopping for breakfast and I'll keep you in the drying room for two days!"
"Ye...yew can't do that." Came the sullen and rumbling response from a blue kobold who stumbled forward. "Ma dad owns y...hic...yer bunkhouse." A tall cream furred Ferret in light armor quickly moving over to the kobolds side before giving him a whack in the behind with the haft of his halberd. Making the Kobold stumble more but not quite fall over.
"It was not your father that almost burned down the tavern! Move!" This perhaps was that party that had done the stupid. Sav wisely moving to the side as the group passed. Looked to be about eight University, and four-ish city folk, and about four guards. It looked like the city guard were having some trouble trying to keep the sloshed kobolds and Lizardfolk under control. But at least the Ferret was keeping the group moving.
"Seig," Sav would quip as the group moved past. "Is the tavern ok or do you need some assistance?" The Ferret glancing over before a headshake.
"Its under control Kantaso. Busy now. Keep out of trouble." Sav nodding and giving a quick salute as he waited for the other guards to move past.
"Will do Cap'n. Good luck keeping all this lot under control."
"...I wan' breakfast." An unfortunate Lizardfolk complained which got another whack from Seig.
"Thats one more day in the dry out room for you! Hope you can study from in there!"
"Uhhh...Captain Averi can we do that?" The glare shot his way quickly shutting the Mouse up as the group continued on toward the University.
Though thankfully they were all soon past. Thank Auro for that. Making sure he still had all his things Sav would look up at the sky and nod. Still on schedule and now he was fed. Things were looking good. So he would pick up the pace to a jog as he was soon at Auros main gate. Unfortunately less impressive than the University gate but they served they purpose well enough and also needed to actually be proper gates rather than a symbol. And after explaining his purpose for being on the road and getting his contract checked by the Snake on duty he was waved through out onto the road and the early morning day. Contracted stamped for his return journey once he was back successful! Stretching his arms out before taking a big step forward. Time to do some questing!
