Description
It was only the second day in their nine-day journey to Wander's destination. The burning hot star of planet Scr'ath was brutal in this barren desert.
The bounty hunter had no issue with it -- her people were strong and equipped for harsh, arid, scorching climate.
She could walk for miles and miles without having to rest, eat or even drink.
Her captive drunkenly admired her strength, observing her scaly bare feet unscathed by ground that must have been reaching temperatures well over 120 degrees.
With that in mind he couldn't afford to collapse on it with his soft flesh, although he felt like he was dying.
He occasionally turned his face up, closing his eyes, hoping any sort of cool breeze or ounce of mercy would be forged by nature, but She gave not.
Each inhale was hotter than the last, his mouth was completely dried out.
It was a dryness he could almost feel in his lungs.
Sylvia had gotten an early start on walking her captive through the empty terrain.
They'd been walking for about five hours with no stops, and though Wander had talked her to death most of that time, the zbornak took note of him gradually getting quieter.
Occasionally she would glance back at him, led by ropes around his wrists, attached to his neck.
Admittedly they could be moving a lot faster if she would only carry him, but Sylvia felt leisurely today.
Not to mention her pride, which meant if she didn't have to, she would not be carrying some worthless fugitive on her back like a jockey.
She had energy to conserve, too, such as for hunting or for fighting any others who came to contest her captive.
So if he could run from bounty hunters all across the galaxy, he could walk to his own end.
But as it passed noon and the heat picked up, she noted the nomad was beginning to stagger.
His eyes were darkening underneath, he'd been sweating nonstop since they started their walk, so he had to be dehydrating rapidly.
His face was red, even with that ridiculous hat to shade him from the burning light.
His breathing was louder, too.
Not to be mistaken for pity, oh no; she spared no remorse for her hostage.
The issue was if he died, she wouldn't get paid the reward, and so as much as she enjoyed watching the struggle, she knew she needed to find a place for them to recover.
Unbeknownst to Wander, she'd been following the scent of water for some time, and they were getting closer.
"Wow, it'sso immpressive how you c'njusst keep gooinng and going...
Hhah, y'haven'tevenn brokena sweat...!" he slurred, staggering.
Sylvia's reply was strong and dignified.
"My people don't sweat."
"Wwoowww...
How'dya keep...cool...?"
"Save your breath," she spat with a hot-pink eye glaring back at him.
"We have a ways to go yet before we reach water.
Think you can stay alive 'til then?"
Wander nodded tiredly, looking up to Sylvia with an exhausted smile on his burning red face.
"'fcourrse...!"
"Good.
Then keep moving."
They trudged on.
Truth be told, Wander didn't know if he would survive to wherever this supposed water was.
He was so delirious at this point, he wasn't even sure if he'd heard her correctly to begin with.
This woman was so cruel, so tough -- he pondered to himself what made her this way.
In all his years of wandering he'd roamed through more than his fair share of deserts and wastelands, but he'd always made sure he had plenty of water on his person.
And sure, he could just pull something out of his hat, but for one thing he didn't want to draw too much attention to it for now, and he also hated to be heavily reliant on it.
He tried to trust his captor's instincts.
Perhaps this was a punishment he deserved; it wasn't for him to decide, he thought.
As they passed over a sandy hill, large eyes were greeted by the wavering vision of trees, rocks, and a generous body of water.
He assumed that, like everything else up until now, it was a mirage, or perhaps he'd finally blacked out along the way and was starting to dream.
He paused to look at it, but was started back into walking when Sylvia tugged at his rope.
And then, finally, a few minutes later the water was at their feet.
Sylvia sniffed around for other people or animals while Wander dizzily admired the glittering pool before him.
A few prey animals were nervously sipping at the water's edge, but thus far she spied no predators.
"Hh, you werright, it is water...!
D'youu mind if ah--"
Before he could finish his request Sylvia casually smacked his back, sending him flopping into the water, still attached to his bindings.
Startled by the jolt, the fall and the sudden shift in temperature, Wander flailed and gasped as he brought his face out of water, panting.
While he recovered, Sylvia pulled a stake and small hammer from her belt, nailing into the ground a place to tie the other end of Wander's lead.
She used a small welding tool to melt the rope to the metal, fusing it so he couldn't untie himself -- she would cut it off from here later.
Once done, while he sat on the bank and watched, the zbornak wordlessly entered the shallows and began to cool herself.
The trees provided shade, the flowers were pretty, and the little animals scattered at all the commotion.
Sitting in the water, Wander watched his company, mindless for a moment, but then smiled again and happily wallowed in the relief that had finally been brought to him.
Giggling and sighing, he relished this opportunity, and he and Sylvia both took this time to drink from it.
She'd also carried canteens and took this time to refill them, too.
They would stay here through the hottest point of the day.
Wander would remain tied by the bank when Sylvia inevitably went hunting, finding meat for herself and vegetables for her stupid vegetarian captive.
How could he possibly hope to stay fueled up if he didn't have any meat in his system?
Either way, after a few hours they would move again.
Faster, but with a little more leeway for Wander to make it without keeling over and baking himself on scorched earth.

Sylvia's such a bitch, man
So this was actually days before the tying him to a cactus thing, and I SWEAR I HAVE HAPPIER SHIT IN THE WORKS SNFHFHDJBCDDJWKC I JUST LOVE PUTTING MY FAVES THROUGH IT, YA KNOW HOW IT BE
Also i've been enjoying writing these small stories, i don't really do that much anymore (not since we moved, ugh) and i wanna encourage myself to do that more
It's good for meh.
The art was a challenge, i don't like it as much as the cactus one but i think i did all right!
Tried to use effects to make the background look all distorted by heat waves, tilted the image some to further sell Wander's delirium, ya know.
Little details.
This poor little creature, i imagine there has to be a reason Sylvia spends the rest of her life just drenching him with affection and love and protection ;A;
She knows she fucked up, and he'll never hold it against her.
BLESS.
