Description

Okay, for now, that's pretty much got it. Long-term viewers might note that entries 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 16 don't seem to have been addressed in the story posted thus far. Entry 13 made its appearance in Demon's Due Teaser Image 10 , and the others will become more important in the expansions that occur during the publication/second pass of the next six chapters. Other locations will also be featured therein and in Duel Nature, and after I've done a few more publications, I'll come in and update this WIP. It will include entries for those locations where Otter-Deirdre and Owl-Deirdre conducted a search for Valerin, along with where Elina was led on her difficult trek below and above the city. For now, as has been suggested in my comments and in those posted by others, this map serves well for my master reference of the city and surroundings, but it doesn't look much like the hand-drawn thing one would expect in any post-Tolkien high fantasy epic. Not to fear, my intent is still to convert this to a hand-drawn version that will appear more fitting for the publications.

(EDIT July 13, 2018: The hand-drawn version is here: Dernhem City Map Drawn WIP ).

Just about done here. I've added some cast shadows from the rising sun to show the rise and fall of the land. I'm currently working on selecting out the "important" buildings and streets, and I'll go through and add a link page with images that have appeared in the story thus far.

Basic tones layered down for solid walls, roads and cobblestones, water, natural ground, and worked ground. Needs some adjusting, but the layers will make that easy.

Wait, where did WIP 02 go?!

Well, it was essentially just a photograph of the whole thing when finished, but since I just proceeded to scan the whole thing in and piece the swaths together, clean it up, and prepare the result for WIP 03, I didn't post it. This looks better, anyway.

My intentions regarding further WIPs are threefold: (1) apply some basic shading and masking to lighten areas and show the contours of the land, (2) text in the names of buildings, important streets, and natural features, and (3) create a separate file (maybe like a Prezi presentation) that numbers stuff important to the storyline and provides a key. I've inked in most of the pages for Tangled Threads Parts 1, 2, and 3, and so I'm right on schedule here still in my publication goals. So, we'll see what I can get done with it.

I'll move this to my scrapbook when I get the progressive pieces posted.

Considering the scenes that I've drawn in the first pass through the storyline and the expanded scenes that have followed in the second/publication pass, creating this bit of detailed reference material was long overdue. The narrative writers and editors and I are wanting the travel times in and between scenes to be consistent and meaningful, so this will help. In all of my storytelling, in drawing, writing, and in paper-and-pencil rpgs, I've always found a detailed city map a very useful thing. I'll suggest more about why when I post the finished work. Thus far, this has taken me about 15 hours. And, just to allay some fears voiced to me by collared-by-faile this evening, no, I will not be individually selecting out each one of those buildings in my digital work in Photoshop. Some of the buildings will be selected, and I'll select out the cobblestone streets, but I'm thinking that the intent will be to retain with this a more rough "hand-drawn" feel rather than a super-polished one.

I included a ruler in the picture for scale. The city itself is about 30 cm x 40 cm, or 12" x 16".

Astute viewers may be able to recognize where Belfry Rock Cemetery is, along with the Ringrill River, as well as identifying the easier buildings that are important to the storyline, like the Hall of Judgment (called the "Arca Directris" in the narratives), the Tholos ("Tomb of Lords"), and the Fair Harvest Inn. To find the latter, look for a city block located a little outside the middle at about 7:30 around the clock and with a fairly clear center save for two trees, then go to the block that is across the street to the northwest (upper left) of that one. The Fair Harvest Inn is the southernmost corner building on that new block.

For more information on the entire series, read the "'Demon's Due' Defined" journal entry here faile35.deviantart.com/journal… or the "'Demon's Due' Plus" journal entry here faile35.deviantart.com/journal… .

Enjoy!

Note: Tangled Threads and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones this kind of treatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

How many people live in there approximately? And how big is it, from west to east wall? I was trying to do something similar for a d&d setting, but i'm struggling a little with proportions. Thx!

I'm thinking an average of 25,000 people inhabit the area shown on this map and a little further beyond it, ranging from down around 22,000 up to close to 30,000 at its seasonal peak. At its widest in the east-west direction, the wall-to-wall major axis is just over 2 km (pushing 1.5 miles). The circumference of the city walls is about 6.5 km (around 4 miles). Happy to help!

Nr. 12: The rat-man and his goblins are living among them, right?

I don't know about anyone else, but the Stable of the Lecher just sounds like some place we need to see more of.  That's my two cents.  Oh, and the map itself is fantastic ... I was even able to find a few intersections where the Dernhem city planners accidentally managed to have roads intersect at near right angles.

FIRST COMMENT!  Yet again!

There he is, Mister First Comment.
  There he is, our ideal.

During most recent episodes of Elementary, Dr. Joan Watson has been wearing a lot of really adorable men's suit and tie outfits.  And as I've watched... …I've had the stunning revelation that Joan (Lucy Liu) is naked under each and every one of those suits!    Also, I've come to accept that that's as close as I'm going to get to answering my doorbell and finding Lucy standing on the welcome mat naked, slathered with fragrant oils, and bound in golden chains.  I'm very disappointed in you, Jeff.

Excellent!    Now you're gonna start working on a map of the sewers.    Am I right?
Wait.  Where are the llama stables?  The llama dance school?  The combination Feline Synchronized Swimming Pool and Cats on Ice stadium?  It should be under construction by this time.
