Description
First up, I did this years ago (6+) and I think I had a reference picture when I did. For the life of me I can't remember what the reference picture was (a color comic book image, I think), but I recall that all I used from it was the positioning of the arms and hands, which I was originally planning on putting behind her back, as is the case in the painting I am working on (see the scrap of it's wip here --Beware: Mature Content on the wip!).Anyway, if anyone out there recognizes the image from somewhere else, please let me know so I can link to it and even ask the original artist for permission (well, it's kinda' late, isn't it?).
(Edited August 23, 2006: By strange fortune I have come across the artist in question, whose work I used for reference and which work was lost to him after a hard-drive crash. This gracious individual happens to be a long-term DA member, loraxxx , whose work I admire. Needless to say, I am pleased with the way this whole experience has turned out, and I send credit my new friend's way for his inspirational computer work that popped this image into my head. Muchas Gracias!)
By the way, my experience is that snakes stink. They smell really bad. I'm not into exotic pets. In fact, I'm not into pets of any kind. Not even dogs, cats, birds, or fish. Certainly not ferrets, hedgehogs, or a snake! I read the other day about a pet python that attacked its owner, did horrible damage to his arm, was wrestled off of him by three policemen, and finally shot and killed by said policemen. Yeah, that's my idea of a rewarding master-pet relationship! Sign me up! Does it come with a nose-plug and bandages...?
Enjoy!
PS. I apologize to all those pet-owners and pet-lovers out there. God bless you and your animals...

At first, snakes don;t stink at all. I don't understand where did you get this idea. I worked with snakes, I have a pet snake myself and THEY DON'S STINK! Heck, even their skin consists of scales, which if you think about it can't by itself make a stench of any sort. They are also very clean animals, they don't even poop every day like most of other animals do.
Second, pet snakes(even huge pythons) are MUCH less likely to attack their owners than other pets(like cats and dogs) and cases which you heard about are either stupid rumors which snake haters spread(and considering snake reputation in religion and fiction this is very likely) or just an exceptional case. Once a snake starts trusting it's owner, the chance it it'll attack him is incredibly low. Snake behaviour is much more predictable than pet mamma;s behaviour, and wit that, they are really calm and peaceful animals.
I am unable to express how much I hate when people judge animals they don't even know

Well! My experience with snakes is likely not as extensive as yours, but I do have some. And, in my experience, the snakes did stink. Maybe they weren't clean. Maybe their pen wasn't clean. Maybe I wasn't clean so my own smell gave said snakes indigestion. No explanation for it. I'm sorry if it doesn't jive with your experiences, but I'm not going to withdraw the comment, as to do so would be a lie on my part. Also, I don't care if snakes are much less likely to attack their owners than a chihuahua--my point is that I don't like ANY pets. And compared to having NO pets, having a pet python is a hell of a lot more dangerous. No argument possible there, I'm afraid. Well, I do like women as pets, which is probably enough to get another tirade posted here from any number of corners. Oh well. I really don't have anything against snakes. They're cool, and fascinating, and I hope they enjoy their existence on the planet just like every other form of life other than mosquitoes which I do honestly hate. I guess I'm not sure why you felt you needed to attack me on this ground--it sounds like I've just insulted someone's Church of Snakes. I am unable to express how much I hate when people judge people they don't even know...

I would take your pic description as just an opinion UNLESS you posted this "Yeah, that's my idea of a rewarding master-pet relationship!" it clearly shows Β the usual stereotype people think about snakes, like they are gonna betray, they can't be trusted. I'd rather trust any wild snake than a dog I see on the street, whom so many people love so much. I don't hate dogs or any animals, but I'm just saying people have been covering them with unfair stereotypes for hundreds of years.
Also you say 2 opposite things, you say you think snakes are facinating animals and yet if you ever had a pet it would definitely not be a python, that it would be a horrible thing to do. There are differen kinds of pythons you know. even if you are afraid it may get hungry when it gets too big(though snakes can distinguish human's smell from the animals they were born to hunt, and they definitely recognize the smell of their keepers) you could always get a small kind of python, which doesn't grow very big. Sure it could always bite you if you do something wrong(scare it to death or if your hands smell with food you feed it), like ANY pet. But there would be nothing terrible about it. it wouldn't hurt much more than if you had a cat that bites(and pet cats bite VERY often)
And yes, I dont know you, but the thing is people have been spreading the hate and lies abiut snakes for so much time, and you are one of these people-drawing snakes capturing a poor girl and making comments like "snakes stink" and "oh I heard python tried to stangle his keeper what a rewarding..." and all of this. You may think it won't hurt snakes in real life but it may. There are HUGE amount of people who would kill any snake they see on their way JUST because they think snakes are dangerous, will either bite you(if it;s venomous) or stangle you to death(mind you, even attacks of the biggest snakes in the world on people are extremely rare) . I also know many cases when people killed small, non-venomous snakes. They aren;t educated, but they were taught by every sort of fiction(including such arts and descriptions to them) that snakes are either evil or so dangerous they shouldn't be left alive no matter what. That they are an enemy, a threat to humanity and the more you kill them-the better. And trust me, I've been working on this studying snake behaviour and what people think abou tthem for years, so I know what I'm talking about
I know you most likely won't edit your description no matter whatI say, but I just want you to understand that doing thigs like this-spreading unfair lies based on opinion, and not facts-is wrong

No, I won't edit my description. Or, if I do, it probably won't be in the way you'd like. My experience with snakes is my experience with snakes, and even if it is incorrect in a general sense, it is my experience. Pardon me for generalizing my minor experiences with garter snakes, rattlesnakes, and a single boa constrictor to the vast suborder serpentes. I will pray to Jormungandr the Mighty and ask for forgiveness for my error.
Beyond that, I'm afraid I can't take the time to discuss the differences between fantasy and reality with you. In this case, the fact that there are snakes constricting the girl has very little to do with snakes and everything to do with the girl. While I do find snakes fascinating (and don't want to own one), I'm not attracted to snakes at all, but I do like women quite a bit. Damsels in distress is a favorite theme of mine (perhaps the favorite theme of mine), and snakes are a fun occasional element to add to that theme, like spiders and silkworms and tentacled creatures that have unique ways of securing their prey. I had no idea that as cool and unique as they are, I had to ban snakes from inclusion in DiD art because some dense people out there might think snakes really behaved like I have pictured them in this fantasy image (that is the category I placed this in: Traditional Art/Drawings/Fantasy ). Someone who takes my damsel in distress images as a literal reflection on the world at large probably should not have access to the internet in the first place.
So, I'm sorry that you're offended by this picture, and/or by my comments about it, which others have agreed with and disagreed with in the past. I'm sorry if you think that my art is harmful to the members of suborder herpentes. Should I be expecting a crusader from the Venus Fly Trap Congregation and the Christian Society of Arachnids to come after me for these two? faile35.deviantart.com/art/Traβ¦ faile35.deviantart.com/art/Araβ¦ Or maybe members of the Annelida-Nematoda Foundation for this one? faile35.deviantart.com/art/Nevβ¦
In short, I really don't think I can help you with the problem as you see it, though if I had been approached with a little more coolness and less religious outrage, I might have gone in and changed things so that they appear less offensive to some. Now I won't, and I have so many Damsels in Distress to draw, I'm not wasting any more time with this. Good luck with everything, and I hope you can find some things to enjoy around here.
-Jeff

Well, I'd say "I stand corrected," but the snakes I've smelled (two boas and a blow snake) weren't very fragrant. Maybe they just weren't clean. Regardless, I still think they are very cool, and lots of fun to draw and paint (as my gallery suggests), so don't take it too personally...
And thank you!

I am obsessed, actually. But, most of my family calls me the skunk master. I've handled the stinkiest critters(skunks, weasels, ferrets, and one of them weird parrot things) with no problem, but give me a reptile, and....let's just say I don't like that particular odor...

I'm pretty much "animal-intolerant." Give me an animal, and I'll tell you why I don't like it, from my boys' allergies to the potential mess in my yard to the smell in my house. I'm pretty critical. And, I recognize that animals bring such happiness to so many people, that maybe I'm missing out... Ah well.

So her expression is down to the bad smell, rather than the bondage. Ew! And I'm with you on disliking ferrets. I had a recurring nightmare of one ripping my cat apart before finding it dead in real life (not that a ferret was to blame, as far as I know).
Great detail. I love the undulating snakes and how they've got her well and truly tethered.

Ha! Even after drawing this thing, having and writing that explanation, and living it with for all these years, I've never made that connection! She's reacting to the smell! Well, yeah! It makes a lot more sense now why her nose is slightly turned up--a detail I kept trying to change when I did the drawing, but my mental image insisted, really, on keeping it the way it was. Inspector General Humphreys has just assumed another hat, I'm afraid--you and The-Silverlining are the most cost-efficient psychoanalysts I've ever heard of...

I am really beyond trying to understand it--both with snakes and Kong-ish apes. There are many sexual explanations, actually, which are fun to examine but which have never truly convinced me. From Eden onward, women and snakes just seem to have a rather interesting relationship, I guess. Kong is the ultimate barbarian, a Viking among Vikings, a brute among brutes. Plus, he has a very hairy chest...

Lovley. I know she's supposebly in a pit, but the way the background is drawn gives me the illusion of a lot of movement and action/drama rather than being down in a dark hole.
I think I like our heroine in this one. If one goes by stereotypes, she looks german, but most of all she looks like a kick-ass kinda girl and her face looks angry and scared at the same time. It doesn't have that aura of "damsel in distress" that a lot of your tied up and/or captured ladies do.
