Description 100 theme challenge #53 - "Estranged"

Captain Chen Qing............. Great soldier, generally terrible father..... He only first brought me to learn kung fu at the Jade Palace because I begged for it... He took me there, and I only saw him once every three months whenever he came for my progress report, and I was always expected to greet him formally upon his arrival. I always got the switch from him if there was some crime I did that he didn't think was appropriately punished........ And he only got worse once my mother - Ming - died. That was the point where the beatings were more brutal and seemingly more common. The only good thing was that I had Master Oogway around to keep my father somewhat........"in check".

His visits just got farther and farther apart over the years..... And when I had a son of my own, I was more protective of Shifu around his grandfather than I ever thought I'd be. It wasn't until he was 2 that I finally got fed up with my father... Shifu was doing absolutely anything he could to escape bedtime and ran into his yeye Qing in the hallway - who promptly gave him a slap on the paw with his switch and sent the poor thing bawling and running back to us. I won't repeat all I said to my father afterwards....... But I wasn't about to make Shifu go through the heck with Qing that I did.

Shifu was perhaps 5 when he first got the switch... I only gave it to him whenever he put himself or others into life-threatening danger by his own disobedience...... And I promised myself when I was young that I'd always make sure sure any cub of mine knew that I loved him, no matter what I had to do to him........ And I made it a point never to punish my son like that out of sheer anger. I was, in no way, about to leave a scar like that on my family name and - more importantly - my cub.

Im new here and i mean literally new i just joined a little while ago so i could comment on art. I REALLY love your art i dont know how you do it but its some of the best here. I was wondering though how did you get inspired to create a whole new era of KFP?

Sorry, going through my inbox. But thank you so much! Honestly, when I came to love Shifu so much and there was zero info released about his background, I just felt obligated to make my own. And it just built from there.

His father looks really angry at him or something. You did a great job makeing this. However i am gonna say that Koto's father is not someone id want to run into.

Indeed. But it makes Oogway saving Koto all the better.

This is just marvelous; I think those expressions clearly conveyed their personalities to everyone!

I can't say it enough; I can't stand Qing at all. Oh, what I wouldn't give to punt that little coward right down those steps!

Thanks! I think Cryssy's revision of it portrayed it perfectly.

He wouldn't like that.

Yes! I saw that!

Well, I'm sure his son didn't like being viciously beaten with a switch. Maybe it'll teach him a little self-control.

Aah, I did see this before. I just never commented >.0 ... stupidity wins that battle...

Chen Qing does sound like the kind of man to try to be on the better side of. Although as far as father's go, I can't really defend my own character, mind you ... He wasn't nearly as physical with his kid as Qing was but ... he did leave a heavy scar. Anyways!

Qing may not be the kind of father that would win an award, but Koto at least shows that he's got the patience, dedication and love to at least tolerate his parent. I mean, living under the man's rule and switch for so long would normally drive someone insane, and even after Koto had Shifu one would think that the Grandfather would lay off, or at least show some compassion towards the child while still haggling the father ...

But I guess when enough is enough, you lay you foot down. Poor Koto for his scolding here, and Poor Shifu for his switching when he was 2. So the question I have is, does Koto still, or did he still, care about his father, even though he was a hardass?

FaithFirefly In reply to UnrealFox [2009-10-03 01:15:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for commenting!

Koto would've turned out a LOT worse if he hadn't come under Oogway's care. I guess that's the one way he was safe. Nah, Qing still would've haggled Shifu. As a grandfather, he's all the more a "respected" elder.

But when he was old enough to be able to protect his family and have some manner of control over how his father treated them, he jumped at the chance.

My oh my, Captain Qing doesn’t appear to be the sort to be reckoned with. As if that look on his face wasn’t menacing enough, that cane sure does the trick! Poor Koto!

I’ll admit, it is truly fascinating learning about Shifu’s yΓ©ye, and learning a little about Koto’s upbringing. That was a good idea! It’s clear now why Koto raised Shifu the way he did.

Great job all up! I still can’t get over how well you do expressions on your characters!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FaithFirefly In reply to Emerald-Procyon [2009-07-28 23:13:14 +0000 UTC]

It's more of a switch than a cane, but yeah - scary enough?

I guess I owe a little cred to . RPing with her gave me a lot of these ideas. But switches were a regular use in ancient China, and Qing's a very traditional man that sadly echos how heads of the house were considered pretty much like lords in those times, and their wives and children were expected to treat them as such.

And thanks! Sorry it took so long to reply.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Emerald-Procyon In reply to FaithFirefly [2009-08-02 08:15:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah. It's scary all right. And now I officially know what a switch is.

Wow... I can't imagine Qing being a particularly favourable family head. But then again, if Chinese were anything like the Romans (for I know little if not nothing about Chinese history) , I guess that finding a male head who cared more for his family's well being than of his own stature was rare. Qing certainly has lived up to tradition.

You're welcome! And don't feel bad. Hey, you're talking to a girl who can take months to reply.

FaithFirefly In reply to Killyfost [2009-06-19 03:25:32 +0000 UTC]

Not quite sure....... But Qing's just probably being very critical about something rather minimal that the cub did. Whether Koto's in for the switch or not, I'm not sure.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

alvin938 [2009-06-07 13:44:49 +0000 UTC]

Qing does not look like a pleasent man, you nailed that, along with his personality. His design is overall quite pleasing on the eyes too, that switch behind his back makes him seem more menacing.

I can see why Koto strived to be a better man than his father and take better care of his son. Who do you think would be his voice if they put your works into production?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FaithFirefly In reply to alvin938 [2009-06-19 02:48:13 +0000 UTC]

My main goal with his design was to basically give him zilch in vivid/bright colors like all my other characters. The badge was an exception, though, 'cause it was mandatory and because he is a good fighter.....just a lousy dad.

Who'd do Qing's voice? I haven't thought on that. But I'd LOVE to see Nicolas Cage portray Koto!

FaithFirefly In reply to BenJJedi [2009-06-19 02:42:00 +0000 UTC]

I had a feeling it would come to that. I tried to make it a little more brown than Shifu's..... Yet Shifu is supposed to have a tiny bit of his yeye in him, most noticeable in his "post Tai Lung, pre Po" stage. And his name's Qing. From what I've learned, in ancient China at least, the family name comes first. So that's why I've always said Chen Shifu, Chen Koto, and Chen Qing.
