What made your uncle doubt about the commonly revived fossils was the pattern they all took, all are rock types and 2 stage evolutions.
Seems like his research was right! And 3 stage evolutions aren't a recent thing.

It seems like ancient humans used to capture Joustilus and use their shells as weapons against bigger pokemon. We're not quite sure how they managed to do this because Joustilus are so big as well.
