Description
First, some notes about the cover;
1. The painterly style of the cover was chosen so that it would be something I could duplicate for future books. The style of the formatting was also chosen for this reason. I spent many years trying to decide on a design I liked, but in the early summer of 2009 I came up with it. Earlier covers looked more like movie posters. (You can see the 2nd concept in the long line of cover concepts here which displays the movie poster-like tendencies--> )
2. Credits for help on the cover go to all my Capilano U' classmates but in particular who messed with the typography and made it like a million times better. Thanks Lori!!
3. The cover features the prominent world of the Copperbane Series (Rimer - pronounced Rim-err as dictated by Kayli), the moon Zenith, the god Kayoss Calmbreeze and space cutters which are space ships. No, I was not being lazy when I drew those. They are absolutely light absorbingly matte black - it's camouflage in space.
4. The only part of this cover that makes me twitch is how I messed up Kayoss's cheek markings on one side, but I'm leaving it. Another mildly twitch worthy detail is how with the barcode, all the work I did painting the continent of Tarn and the Thundarican peninsula is covered up. Grrr. Hopefully this problem will be solved on the hardcover version later this summer, which is sure to be as hellish to format as this was. (I think it took me about a week? You wouldn't believe how many failed attempts I have laying around on my hard drive! Formatting is a bitch, it's almost as bad as editing the actual manuscript! (SOMUCHMATHOHGOD))
5. This is just the draft version of the cover. It's not the real one. The real one obviously has the barcode and a much wider spine. I'm going to have funnnn lining up up the spine markings when it comes time to format Born of Fire's cover! NOT.

And now, for the long awaited.... AOH FAQ!
Q. When does AOH come out?
A. June 2nd 2010
Q. Where will AOH be available?
A. The best place to find it will be online. You'll be able to order it using its ISBN 978-0-9865936-0-4. Websites that will carry it include Amazon and Lulu.com. I'll also be selling it, but I need to work out how that will work first. Currently I have no job so I am unable to buy stock (my main concern is food and rent) unless people pay up front the money to do so. As the printer is in the states, for signed copies I will have to ship your book to myself first, then to you. For non-signed copies I can sell the book to you at a discount and have it shipped directly to you. Eventually I plan to have AOH in bookstores, but at first it's best to just get it at Lulu or Amazon. Tell me if you see it being sold anywhere - I'd love to know!
Q. How do we buy it from you?
A. Throw me a note. Payment up front only, cheque, money order or paypal. Bear in mind though that I have yet to look into shipping costs, so this is not open yet. I have to take my proof to the post office to check and make notes on this before I can make accurate estimates for cost to anybody. Keep an eye on my journal.
Q. Okay... in what formats will AOH be available in?
A. At first just US trade paperback. Hardcover will come later in the summer. I'm undecided on the subject of e-books. I'm typically against them.
Q. Where will it ship?
A. Lulu ships just about everywhere and I'm pretty sure Amazon does too. Canada Post always says they ship everywhere, so if you get the book from me it'll probably get to you just fine wherever you live.
Q. How many pages long is it?
A. AOH is 457 pages long.
Q. Is it illustrated?
A. No. It has a front inside cover that is fully illustrated as well as a map, but other than that and chapter treatments it is not illustrated.
Q. Who is the publisher?
A. Copperbane Studio Press - me. Copperbane Studio Press is recognized as a publisher by the Canadian government and I own my own publisher ISBN prefix.
Q. So it's self published right? Why'd you decide to do that?
A. The main reason is that I wanted the illustrations on the 1st versions of my books to be as correct as possible. Mainstream publishers don't typically let the author choose what the book's going to look like. They generally choose the illustrator and so one of my greatest literary pet peeves is when the illustrator draws a main character and gets it completely wrong because they payed absolutely no attention to their notes or they didn't get any to begin with. Is it wrong to want the first edition to be my way completely? I honestly don't think so. I'm also 'testing the waters' with self publishing, trying to see what sort of audience I might have.
Q. You're aware that there is a negative stigma to self publishers in the publishing industry?
A. Yes. I thought this decision through.
Q. Will you be publishing it 'for real' later?
A. Maybe in the future. Even if AOH isn't successful though, I'm still going to keep writing the series because it's what I love to do. Screw anyone who thinks that there is anything wrong with that.
Q. Who did the editing?
A. A lot of people. AOH has been in editing for about half a decade. By this point everyone who has worked on it has read it far too many times. Big credits go to Naomi Brost and Alyssa Windsor for doing the majority of the editing that wasn't accomplished by me.
Q. What's the genre?
A. Sci/fi Fantasy
Q. What's the age group?
A. Young adult and up.
Q. Soooo what's it about?
A. Directly off of the back cover 'cus I'm not telling you any more:
After decades of research and planning, the United Nations of Earth at last have a plan for saving the human species - send it to the stars. Sarah Chartier never imagined this plan would affect her. Arrested for theft, Sarah is given a rather strange parole - civilian companion to five explorers, including one named Zack whom the leader of the project himself called an idiot. Just as Sarahβs warming up to her parole on the new planet of P346576, disaster strikes, annihilating most of the exploratory team as well as the ship they arrived in. Saved by a peculiar creature named Kayli, Sarah and Zack find themselves stranded beyond hope of rescue, not even able to call home. With nothing else for it, they embark on a daring quest for salvation across the continent, led by Kayli, who has the astonishing ability to speak and understand any language. Plagued by weather, disaster and predators, they struggle for survival in a wild land, living only through Kayliβs experience. But when they finally reach their destination it is only to discover that thereare bigger problems, problems which are monumental compared to their own survival...
Could you save a world that was not your own?
Q. So is it just about animals?
A. You're going to be very disappointed if you think it is. Yes, there are animal-like characters, but don't expect it to be a story like Black Beauty or Vulpes. AOH as with all books in its series is a story about an event in Rimer's history - in this case, when humans came to Rimer and another event which will for now go unmentioned.
Q. What's a space cutter?!!
A. Read the book!!!
Q. What's the ISBN again?
A. 978-0-9865936-0-4
Q. What's an ISBN?
A. There's such thing as googling this question, however, I will tell you. 'ISBN' stands for 'International Standard Book Number' and it is the number which identifies books in catalogues all over the world. In fact, ISBNs make up part of a book's barcode and in order to be sold, a book must have one. With the use of an ISBN you can also order any book through any book store - or so the theory goes.
Q. When did you start writing AOH?
A. I started writing AOH when I was nine years old and in grade 3. I remember it so well because it's the same year I got my cat Sunny who I sadly no longer live with. AOH has literally been in production for eleven years and has gone through a lot of changes during this time, though luckily some things are immortal. The human protagonists, Zack and Sarah, are almost exactly the same in basic concept as they were way back when when I wrote the very first manuscript. The funny thing is that back then I could hardly read - I had only just learned how, yet I was determined to become an author and tell stories nonetheless. I've been telling stories since I was literally three years old and I even still remember what those stories were about.
Q. Who's you favourite character in AOH?
A. Momentaru. (Kayoss is fighting for my favourite overall in all the stories. His opponent? Ki!)
Q. Okay, random - who was the hardest character to write?
A. Kayli. When I was fifteen she was easy, but five years later she's so cynical and unlike me that she's extremely hard to write to the point where I think she will mellow out in the next book Born of Fire because I'm not sure if I can match how full of sheer vim she is in AOH for in BOF. However, if she's a little different it's okay because between AOH and BOF a lot of time passes - eleven years. This is not to say that I won't do my best to write her the same way, it's just that people do change with time, so so shall Kayli somewhat.
Q. Any last words?
A.
I love drakoon.
Um wow, so yeah... if there's anything I didn't cover make sure to give me a shout! I'll answer it!

Evil space ships!!!! XD They're painted with a black that absorbs light. It's camouflage.
Well, they're not evil from the point of view of the aliens piloting them.

Let me just say that I am HIGHLY impressed by your efforts to bring this book to life and to get it out there. Congratulations on completing it! I don't know how long I've been thinking about writing a childrens book, and how I've wasted every opportunity to get working on it. You are way ahead of the game, and that takes hard work, dedication and faith in yourself. Great job.
I am truly amazed by you.

This looks great!! I hope to eventually read it, though I need to use my Barnes & Noble cards before I can get anything from Amazon ^^'
How did you self publish it? I have never really understood how that works. Hopefully that isn;t a bad question to ask - I don't mean to be prying! I was at a time planning toomplete a story and have it published (an English professor was trying to help me with that) but never actually finishe dths story. I am wondering how it would be possile in the future, if I ever picked it back up again

Hehe, kinda yeah but it's a little scary too. As the author I've read it so many darn times I don't really know if it's as good as I think it is, so I'm really on tenterhooks waiting for reviews to come in. Thanks!

It sounds neat. Maybe I'll check it out if it ever comes to my library. Could you tell me about your experience with self-publishing? It's not a route I want to take for myself, but I'm always curious about how it's done.
