Subject: Jane from my story Kingdom of SpiritsExperiment: Reflections & Shading
Time: 3 hr
Comments: Well I was going to write a big speel about what ki-rin are, and KOS, but it's class right now so I won't. Maybe later.
BTW, before anyone points it out, my ki-rin are inspired by Windstone, but I have changed their anatomy. They're more truly deerlike, but they have horsish features too and of course koi. Soon I'll upload a picture featuring my take on asian dragons*.
*Probably more commonly known as Chinese dragons, but this is kind of incorrect, since they're found in countries other than China too, such as Japan. (I'm trying to be polite.) Interestingly, while ki-rin were created in China, they're actually more important in Japan. Cool stuff!

Great work. You need more contrast in the dark areas. The values are to similar. Otherwise great use of reflection. Keep growing. Check my gallery if you want. I appreciate constructive criticism. [link]

! In china they're called Qilin, which is actually the word for giraffe. I dunno why this stood out to me so much in your gallery. I really dig the contrast between the dark chocolate brown and the cream~ I love scenes with water reflections. I wish I could pull those off 3:

So that must be the correct spelling then!
(That's hilarious that it means giraffe.) It turned out that the reflection for this was pretty easy, I just finished the colouring of the critter first, then exported it as a .png without the bg and flipped it over, then I brought it back into the original file, matched the feet, then used a bit of good ol' smudge tool.
This is one of my favourite pieces (partially 'cus it has nothing to do with what I usually draw) so thankies.

Well I don't think one's wrong and the other isn't >XD I think Kirin is the japanese spelling and qilin is just the chinese one c: thought I'd throw it in since you mentioned them originating in china.
wow! that sounds a lot easier than I thought it'd be >XD i ought to try that some time

The water effects and refection are gorgeous and very realistic. The scales are a nice detail as well.
Windstone Editions. I want one so bad as well. Another thing for the wishlist. Another deviant I know picked up a bunch of them at a yard sale for a huge steal.

:3 I really like this piece. It's simplistic yet speaks of a freedom we all long for with the vastness of the blue background and the implication of the water. Very good, love it!

ki-rin is beautiful and it really looks like he is running on water. It's so beautiful and perfect, that i'm starting to plan drolling over it for this evening

ROFL! Thankies, that's the effect I was going for, though actually the water is just very shallow. In mythology, ki-rin can run on water, but this ki-rin hasn't learned how yet.
Thanks for liking it so much!

That is gorgeous!! I love ki-rins dearly. Ah another Windstone fan! Do you collect them? I'm a huge hoarder of the dragons and recently I acquired a PYO unicorn that was done as a lovely buckskin.

Falcolf In reply to SilkenWinds [2009-09-18 18:28:11 +0000 UTC]
I WISH I collected them! I'm more of a admirer, since they cost so much. They were the original inspiration for how I draw my dragons. Windstone has always been close to my heart that way, I just ADORE their designs! I really want to get one of their scratching dragons and I hope to get some of their '
aint-you-own' figures soon. I want to paint myself a Windstone falcolf.
(Aaaand a ki-rin, aaand a griffin....)
Windstone is pure awesome. It's through them that I first heard of ki-rin!
I'm jealous of your unicorn, got any pictures to share of it? I'd love to see! It sounds very lovely!

SilkenWinds In reply to Falcolf [2009-09-18 18:55:50 +0000 UTC]
You could try collecting the little hatchers or fledgie dragons, or the griffin chicks. They aren't too expensive. I've sold off some of my other collections in order to buy some more, broke a ten year wait with an emerald peacock male, then went a bit crazy and picked up a red fire mother, a retired peacock lap dragon, and I got the circle of dragons candlelamp.
I have a scratcher, a less common jade one. That's always been my favorite and I've had him for over 10 years. Which color scheme do you like best? (Hint-if you go on eBay and look for not-so-perfect ones, you can get a good price and then just fix them up yourself. I had an old original green hatcher and young dragon recently fixed ((had some chipped paint areas and the hatcher had a small piece broken off the top)) for like $25, she does marvelous work you could never tell they were damaged in the first place!!)
Do you peruse the Windstone forums, by the way?
Sorry Falcolf if I ramble on it's just one thing I'm big on talking about.

Ramble away, I'm fascinated by Windstone!
I didn't even know you could buy them on ebay, but I guess that's sorta obvious lol. Maybe I'll look for one of the original ki-rin. (So pretty!) I haven't been on the windstone forums before, are they cool? I guess I should check them out. My favourite colour scheme is probably the new silver one, because it's so simplistic, but sooo gorgeous. I'm also a huge fan of the brown and gold. I remember there used to be a blue one I really liked, but I haven't been able to find pictures of it and I can't remember its name. (It was in stores when I was a kid.) A friend of mine really loves the baby draggies, so maybe I'll try to get her one once I have $$$.
Windstone is so addictive. I used to have a brochure of their products which I used to just drool over, all the time. I miss that little brochure...

Oh you sound like me! I used to hoard and collect those brochures but I lost them I think...
But..heh...you can go to the link below, scan the website, buy something (though it's hard since they moved production has been slowed down so a lot of stuff is out of stock) and if you join the forum you can get a chance to talk with Melody Pena, the creator. There's a section dedicated to questions called "Ask Melody".
