Even cheaper and quicker is to use a sheet of overhead projector plastic and tape it over the tablet

thats right, but it should last years, and not days with heavy use, otherwise a paper or board would do it too.

Don't know about years, but I've had the same plastic sheet for 6 month and it doesn't show any signs of giving in yet. All with things i found in my desk drawer, and set up in 5min.

OK, well I had the plexi lying around, I guess everything is usable. The interesting part about it, is that the amount of thickness up to 4mm is possible, depending on the desired surface from board, wood to plexi or foil, anything works to make the experience nicer

The important thing is that there is ways to avoid getting robbed by wacom when the coversheet wears out.

agreed!

why not measure the whole active area and then cut the plexi, sand the edges off nice and smooth and then use the isoband to fix it in place. That would be considerably less in means of plexiglass loss and would probably hinder you less. Anyways, nice tip ! this however probably won't work with my bamboo the action buttons are too damn close to the active area (practically glued one near the other.

Its rounded with sandpaper and doesn´t hinder in any way.
I´m still working with it this way, the only thing i´ve changed is replacing the isoband with hotglue-
Though a little thinner plate would do it, but thats what i had lying around

well the most important thing is that it works ! and the solution is quite ingenious too !

In my old Wacom, I just reversed the plastic sheet. But this seems better, I thought 4mm were too many, but if it works to you...

there was this guy in a magazine who made a cintix DIY, from that i know the max distance can be around 6-8 mm, the plexiglas could be even thinner next time- but it works like a charm

Never had scratches like that at all however I have been having some issues which are driving me crazy.

My wacom keeps double clicking when it shouldn't, like every third click it will double click. And when I open photoshop for the first time and use the brush tool, or really any tool, it starts from the bottom right and goes all over the place, but then doesn't do it again until I open another new document.

Not sure if you have ever run into these same problems? I have downloaded new drivers uninstalled them and reinstalled several times. I have vista so I am not surprised if that has anything to do with it. And my wacom is 3 years ago but I feel in good shape.

I cleaned the bottom of the wacom mouse and that seemed to help a bit.

fantasio In reply to ChristenKojnok [2009-10-22 19:35:58 +0000 UTC]

hm,not sure if i got that right but it sounds like there were two different problems.
the first i would assume is a misconfiguration in the driver -settings, check out the buttons, maybe there is a hook on the wrong place- the other could be if you have linked the tablet in context to photoshop and setup extra gestures or options. if there are no connections, try to setup one special setting for photoshop and try several scenarios, i´m pretty sure its in the driver options...
hope it helps...

kann man bestimmt, aber ich hab mir halt überlegt obs nicht ne lösung gibt die länger als 12 monate hält... wird jetzt mal getestet und so far: geht wie schmitts katze

Kann man schon fast uberlegen das provisorisch zu machen

fantasio In reply to cursive-illustration [2009-09-12 16:00:17 +0000 UTC]

Good tip . I have some sticky-back acetate and I wonder if that would give the same result - it would certainly be neater as you can cut it to size.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fantasio In reply to Gaina [2009-08-23 19:43:20 +0000 UTC]

hm, i would try it if its thick enough. the main problem is that a too soft material can cause beeing scratched too easily again.

Gaina In reply to fantasio [2009-08-24 17:56:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I see what you mean. Mine is going slightly in one area too. Hopefully Wacom will get their act together on this.

today i had work a couple hours on the shiny new flexi -and it goes like a new one, but easier somehow. i wonder how it will develop in the long run, i keep you updated on this

If I'm drawing something with my wacom and I feel it 'running away with me' I often put a scrap of paper over the tablet and that feels nicer.

You can actually get replacements for the part that is scratched for a couple bucks. I had to a few years ago. You just peel a thing off the back, peel off the old one, and stick it on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fantasio In reply to solalia [2009-08-23 08:55:35 +0000 UTC]

thanks, but its not a durable solution. i had a graphire before and then i remember there was a plastic cover over the surface -i suppose the material is build to last at least a year of professional use and then you can buy either replacement or a new one...

the problem is that i use only one spot of the tablet, this makes 4 uses from a 50 cent plexiglas- turned in about 30 seconds

solalia In reply to fantasio [2009-08-23 17:29:51 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I use mine about 8 hours a day 6 days a week and the first one lasted me 2 years, the last one I put on doesn't even have a mark in it yet and it's been over a year now! Odd.

fantasio In reply to solalia [2009-08-23 19:35:46 +0000 UTC]

me too so perhaps the tablets are not made for that
it depends maybe on how you use it, i use to work on one spot of the tablet all the time, unconscious.
its maybe that i rotate and place the zommed image and area to work on so that i don´t need to move the hand much over the tablet

I didnt quite get it, that flexi-glass lets pressure thru?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fantasio In reply to DarkestHorn [2009-08-23 08:57:28 +0000 UTC]

yepp, i tried before application -and it works with every single pressure step -but its quicker and easier for my hand. can´t say anything about durability until now, but its easy to turn if scratches appear again.

DarkestHorn In reply to fantasio [2009-08-23 09:57:56 +0000 UTC]

if youd put that flexiglass when you just bought tablet then it would go for years. What did you did with it that it is so scratched? were you using soze pressure instead of just using paint bucket tool? :d

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fantasio In reply to DarkestHorn [2009-08-23 11:37:04 +0000 UTC]

i also suppose it would last very much longer if fixed after purchasing.

well, i just worked all day with it for over a year now, and after reading that this is a comon intuos problem, this idea came in very handy as i found a piece of unused flexiglas lying around

i mostly use to draw with the tablet, and its funny that just one spot is used 90% of the time - dunno why ppl buy an a4 size tablet -a6 wide is even too big for me.
I have to admit that i work always in 800% zoomed factor.

DarkestHorn In reply to fantasio [2009-08-23 12:03:02 +0000 UTC]

i am going to buy a tablet and at first i thougth a6 is wayyyy too small for me it is like my i-phone like tiny little greeting card, but i cant afford any bigger but when you say that you zoome super close then i start thinking that a6 will be good enough!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fantasio In reply to DarkestHorn [2009-08-23 19:39:33 +0000 UTC]

thats marketing, i dunno why there are a4 sized ones, maybe for people with too much money.
because you can always work on one area detailed or on a whole sheet roughly - i just don´t get why a bigger tablet should bring more precision into a rough sheet?
it depends on how you work.
i work from scanned pencil sketches, so i can go directly into detail when scanned into PS.

DarkestHorn In reply to fantasio [2009-08-24 07:10:11 +0000 UTC]

I just got an ideo. You should put on that flexi glass when buying and then take it off when somebody who also has tablet comes to your house. And they could like wow how do you keep your tablet unscratched? but in the mean time you change your flexi glass every week end. :d
