There was a time when the road to Great Spirit was blocked to all the animals by a very grotesque, ugly monster. And he was mean too. All the world felt saddened, as it was blocked off from Great Spirit and all his love. He was trapped on the mountain, you see, and could not fight the demon himself. He could, however, call to the animals.
He tried calling to Coyote, who was the most cunning of the Animals. But as Coyote climbed the mountain, and got to the demon...he found no way to reach Great Spirit.
This happened for all the other animals as well: the demon was more Ferocious than Bear, and taller than Raven could fly high. Et cetera et cetera.
Deer answered the call of Great Spirit last. Deer was known for her compassion, and every animal in the kingdom looked to her when they needed a caring hoof around. She climbed the mountain, and she was shaking very strongly. For all she was, Deer was also very timid and shy. It was only because of Great Spirit she got as far as she did. She climbed the mountain, higher, higher, though still she was shaking. She reached the Monster. Monster roared in her face...
And timid little Deer looked up at him with her eyes of compassion and said in her sweet voice, "Would you please let me pass? I am on my way to see Great Spirit, and I can't very much get there unless you move."
Monster looked into Deer's eyes of love and as he did, his heart melted, radiated upon by such kindness. His body fell limp, and he withered away.
Deer made it to Great Spirit after that, and freed him from the bonds that kept him from connecting him to the world.
It is because of Deer all Animals owe their connection to the Divine.
