The fun of fan-fiction is bending the universe you're creating in. Or re-creating in. Ruby wrote a really great fic and played with an idea that has a twisted sort of potential and I just liked it so much I wanted to add to it. It isn't anything deep and introspective, just playful and experimenting. All in good fun
