Description
HURRICANE Class Battleship - FrontHistorical Notes:
While the battle at Solaris Rim was marked as a decisive win for humanity, it was not without it's losses. The massive warships of the hostile alien race the "Silent" took significant effort to destroy, and the much smaller USEC ships were hard pressed to provide sufficient combined firepower. However, in the years following Solaris Rim, humanity's technological knowledge exploded exponentially, issuing forth countless new concepts and innovations. Not among the least being systems automation, allowing ships to be manned with fewer crewmembers than previously necessary. With the Silent now on the defensive and the struggles of the recent battle in mind, the USEC military division Armory commissioned the construction of a combat ship designed to represent the last word in any engagement.
Technical Notes:
Taking inspiration from the recently deployed Typhoon class battlecruiser www.deviantart.com/deviation/8… , fleet technicians expanded the design and its capabilities into a somewhat less cost effective, yet undeniably efficient battleship. Along with a larger expanded frame, the Hurricane class battleship was given a significantly increased powerplant, capable of sustaining all onboard systems indefinitely. With the increased output, technicians were able to create an overlapping shield array, generating a virtually impenetrable force field around the hull. The Hurricane's fighter bays were modified from the open-air type used on previous USEC combat ships that required strike craft to leave under their own power, and instead use a magnetic linear catapult to propel the strike craft out of the launch bay. While the hangars are capable of supporting all of the USEC's fighters, they were especially designed to compliment the FA-354 Aaliyah Strike Bomber www.deviantart.com/deviation/1… , which was deployed right before Hurricane's planning phase.
The hull was designed with the same aggressive "spearhead" shape made popular by the Typhoon, which allowed all of the mounted weapons greater firing arcs than that of other configurations. Unlike the Typhoon, however, which specializes in using heavy ion cannons and little else, the Hurricane was redesigned to utilize a multitude of weapon systems.
Keeping in line with it's predecessor, the primary offensive weapon of the Hurricane is a pair of "Ferox" heavy twin ion cannons. Noting a rather large gap in the Hurricane's firing arcs, the Ferox cannons were designed to be able to fire in a complete 360 degree arc with a full 90 degree vertical swing, giving them the ability to fire directly upwards of the ship, so that it could engage enemies attempting to attack from above. Due to the construction of the turret, some sacrifice needed to be made to the effective range of the weapon, as the ion sphere travels somewhat slower than those fired from other cannons.
The Hurricane is also equipped with four extreme range "Cormorant" beam cannons for precision strikes on enemy formations. Due to the vast distances that the Cormorant is designed to fire across, a specialized radome is mounted on the turret to assist in the computation of targeting calculations. The actual beam weapon is engineered to automatically align with the targeting radome using a set of finely tuned actuator motors that give the weapon its pin point accuracy.
Protecting the aft of the Hurricane is a set of four triple barreled "Eclipse Redux" Triterium railguns. Originally only mounted only on the massive Armageddon class superdreadnaught, the railguns proved themselves highly effective weapons, and the USEC saw fit for them to be given a more active role in ship to ship weaponry. The Eclipse Redux railguns operate as short to medium range artillery cannons, using select-fire triterium shells that allow the weapon to engage with either a high accuracy or an area effect shockwave. However, being aft-facing weapons means that the railguns are somewhat incapable of a full firing arc, and they are best employed to fend off attackers looking to disable or destroy the Hurricane's main drive engines.
While not quite on par with the pure destructive potential of the Ferox, Cormorant and Eclipse Redux, the Hurricane's four "Caracel" plasma cannon mounts offer sufficient protection against smaller and more nimble adversaries. Since the Hurricane itself is more heavily invested in engaging large, slow moving ships, the Caracel cannons represent more of a support role in helping the Hurricane's escorts destroy enemies. Despite their usefulness, the Caracel cannons suffer from not being able to elevate the barrel 90 degrees upward, thereby leaving a rather large gap in its zone of fire.
Noting a significant lack of a missile delivery system on the Typhoon, the new "Drake" Multiple Ordinance Delivery System (MODS) missile launchers were developed, and twelve were included in the Hurricane's design. Each individual launcher contains six launch tubes stacked in pairs for a total of 72 individual launchers. The opening of each launcher uses a variable-focus aperture that allows it to fire nearly any type of missile or torpedo ammunition without sabot casings. Due to their positioning, the Drake launchers excell as broadside weapons, as ordinance fired must correct its flight path should the target exist in any other direction.
Supplementing the standard energy based flak lasers are a set of four "SuperNova" rotary autocannons. Built specifically for anti strike craft duties, the SuperNova ACs can create a solid defensive wall with a firing rate of 12,000 rounds per minute from each of the weapons' four turrets. However, the placement of the SuperNovas limits their effective zone of fire to the Hurricane's top forward quarter, and they are primarily used to engage enemy strike craft at the onset of combat. Should a wing of enemy fighters survive past the hailstorm of bullets, the Hurricane would have to rely on its normal flak lasers and escort ships for protection.
Due to the onboard systems automation, the cost in materials and training required for personnel to maintain the equipment makes the Hurricane an incredibly expensive ship to build. Despite this, the Hurricane was developed in a time when manpower was short and raw materials were in abundance, thus opposition to the project had little momentum.

Additional Notes:
-In the PC game EVE Online, the Hurricane is a battlecruiser class ship while the Typhoon is a battleship class, opposite my personal designations. This was unintentional.
-The model also has detailed fighter hangars and a partially modeled bridge, both of which need to be finished before uploading.

now THATS a battleship. Seeing as how you seem to know about EVE, you'll know how undefended a normal battleship is against small fighters

Especially when your PVE Hyperion is getting ganked in lowsec by 2 battlecruisers and their full wings of drones on a shakedown flight. Good thing i remembered to buy insurance before going in.

lol. It's even better when your T1 cyclone takes down a Cerburus and an Ishkur

The links don't work. They all send me back to this page. That said, damn nice. You'll have to give me a bit to review it and give you a proper bit of feedback, but I love it. Don't think I didn't notice the Caldari homages too.
